SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than a million California voters have signed up for a new statewide tool that can track a mail-in ballot through its journey from the post office to the mailbox to the final election tally, said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.“Where’s My Ballot?” can send voters texts, emails or recorded voice calls updating them on their ballot’s status, including when the ballot has been mailed to a voter, when the elections office has received it, and when the ballot has been counted. Voters must sign up for the service.The system can also alert the voter if election officials have rejected their ballot due to a discrepancy, like if the ballot has been flagged for a missing or mismatched signature.“Vote-by-mail has been popular in California for many, many years. But with a further increase in vote-by-mail participation, the transparency and accountability of those mail-in ballots is even more paramount,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in an interview.Because of the pandemic, election officials are sending mail ballots to every active, registered voter in California for the first time in state history. Monday is the deadline for election administrators in California’s 58 counties to get ballots for the more than 21 million registered voters into the mail stream.Where's My Ballot? debuted in 25 California counties in the March presidential primary before election officials decided to expand it statewide.In addition to the features of voters, Where’s My Ballot? offers election administrators the ability to monitor the U.S. Postal Service in real-time to see if there are any delays, Padilla said.California and several other states sued the USPS, seeking to undo changes by the Trump Administration that the plaintiffs claimed were slowing down mail delivery. A judge sided with California, granting a preliminary injunction Sept. 17.“If we identify any bottlenecks or delays, then we can work with regional and local Postal Service representatives to address those and ensure the timely delivery of ballots, both to the voter and back to the county,” Padilla said.Where’s My Ballot? was created by BallotTrax, a Colorado-based software company that originally developed the technology for elections officials in Denver in 2009.Each time an employee scans a barcode on the ballot or envelope, BallotTrax collects the data. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- October is HIV/AIDS Awareness month…this year we find ourselves still in the grips of a different public health crisis.We’re highlighting the work of an organization born in the 1980’s to help LGBTQ people with HIV and AIDS.Auntie Helen’s in North Park is now meeting needs from the pandemic.10News Anchor Mary McKenzie shares the legacy of a man well-known for taking care of his community – then and now.In the late 80's Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's -- in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988. He did fluff and fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS.Fear and stigma at the time -- hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease. But word spread quickly -- about Gary's services -- and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease... and more and more of Gary's friends and clients became sick... HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100 thousand lives in the U-S in the 1980's. Many of Gary's clients who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's. Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry -- and eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.Rod Legg is now the executive director of Auntie Helen's -- which has come through some difficult times. The laundry service and the thrift store are still co-located in North Park. During the pandemic, they stretched their services to do laundry for a new group -- that needed help.“We also do COVID-19, which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie into the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that.” explains Legg.They're also expanding the store, and their outreach. They give out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers. With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries - no questions asked, no referral needed. Rod found the food, and the volunteers delivered it. At one point, to more than 300 people.“This is everybody's HIV in a sense. Do you know what I mean? We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other.” says, Rod Legg.Auntie Helen's staffs a "warm" line instead of a hot line with volunteers -- taking calls from people struggling with mental health issues. They offer yoga, meditation -- virtually for now -- and provide clients with addiction support and help with job hunting. All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham...Rod Legg remarked, “This man was way before his time. You know? And can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes?”A hero for the community, then and now...That's what we all should be doing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rain created slick streets Wednesday afternoon, slowing traffic to a standstill in some areas and causing crashes in others. Video captured by 10News shows children and an adult climbing out of a vehicle on northbound Interstate 15 near Interstate 8 after their SUV overturned. Good Samaritans and a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer helped rescue two boys and a man from the vehicle. CHP cautioned drivers to slow down and pay attention as rain continued to drench the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have released photos of the man accused of badly beating a Pacific Beach bouncer Sunday night. According to police, four men tried to enter through the side door of a restaurant on the 700 block of Grand Avenue around 9:20 p.m. Sunday when a bouncer told the group they had to use the main entrance. As a confrontation escalated, police say one of the men picked up a metal crowd barrier pole, hitting the bouncer in his head. Others in the group then reportedly started fighting with other bouncers at the restaurant before all four men left, according to police. The bouncer who was hit in the head suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another bouncer suffered a broken nose and two other staff members suffered some bumps and bruises. The man suspected of swinging the pole was described as black, in his 30s, 6 feet tall, and 250 pounds with a muscular build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person is dead following a crash along Interstate 8 in the College Area Thursday afternoon.According to California Highway Patrol, several vehicles were involved in a crash on westbound Interstate 8 at Waring Road near Toyota San Diego.CHP confirmed that the crash involved several vehicles.
