SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Solana Beach man is back in San Diego still recovering from a spinal cord injury that happened halfway around the world in Bali.Anthony Galvan-Schaible's journey happened during the pandemic and even though he's back home, there are months of intensive rehab ahead.Schaible went to Bali in February with plans to stay until April. Then the pandemic started and he had to stay.In late July, Schaible was in a motorcycle accident that left him with a spinal cord injury. He required emergency surgery halfway around the world.RELATED: Local man's trip to Bali takes unexpected turn after crashHis mom flying to be by his side."Pretty much just got stronger and we had to figure out how to fly business class," Schaible said before his return.Two weeks ago, Schaible made it back home, transferred to UCSD La Jolla after three flights and 36 hours of travel with doctors on board."Definitely noticing myself get a little stronger as the days go by but next is an acute rehab facility," said Schaible.In the coming days, Schaible will move to Loma Linda University inpatient rehab. Doctors haven't ruled out the possibility of regaining movement and one day walking again — something Schaible plans to work towards one day at a time."At this point, it's just pretty positive and just looking forward to moving more and wiggling a little bit more and hopefully getting these legs going would be my goal," Schaible says.The family still posted a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses. 1508

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report released on Trevor Heitmann, the teenager known as "McSkillet" on YouTube, is revealing details about what happened before he crashed his vehicle on Interstate 805.The report says Heitmann’s parents called the police to request a psychiatric evaluation stating, “On August 23, the decedent's parents contacted the local police department to request a psychiatric evaluation but were informed that the evaluation could not be performed as the decedent had not broken any laws."The statement means hours before Trevor Heitmann drove his car down the freeway killing two people, police were at his house.RELATED: Autopsy details mental state of McSkillet before deadly I-805 crash"Even though police are trained to identify mental health issues and mental illness issues they just can't take someone off the streets unless there is such conduct to warrant it,” said attorney Kenneth Rosenfeld.Rosenfeld, who has no connection to this case, explained law enforcement does have the ability to detain someone using the 51-50 law. It would allow someone to be involuntarily detained for a psychiatric hold for up to 72 hours.Conduct in many cases needs to be observed. Just saying someone is acting out of nature isn't always good enough.RELATED: YouTuber's family releases statement, offers condolences to crash victims“Police officers are not psychologists or psychiatrists,” he said. “They do their best, but usually when someone’s conduct or behavior is so erratic, that’s when they can factor into the idea that this is probably someone worth taking it.”Police dispatch logs show units arriving at the Heitmann home just after 8:00 a.m., Aug. 23, the morning of the crash.At 9:14 a.m., notes say, “based on statements from parents, there was no credible threat and Subject did not meet 5150 criteria. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid fears of post-election unrest, parishioners at San Diego's oldest church are meeting the possibility of violence with prayer.It's the morning of the election and Peggy Stolberg is hoping to cast a vote for peace — through prayer."It always seems like prayers are the answers to many things," said Stolberg.Stolberg spent part of her morning in the sanctuary of the Mission San Diego de Alcala, her church for the last 35 years."I pray for the unity of our country. I'm also here to pray for non-violent situations after the results come out," said Stolberg.Peggy is one of many — a few at a time — expected to show up by the end of the day, says Father Bill Springer."A little bit of anxiety," said Father Springer.Father Springer believes this was the first-ever all-day prayer vigil for election peace in the history of the 251-year-old mission."We just felt there was a threat of violence around the election, because of the divisiveness of our society and previous violence in the streets," said Father Springer.Father Springer says to combat that, he's calling upon the power of prayer."Aside from the efficacy of the prayer itself, it also alerts people and puts on their mind that this is something people should be concerned about ... and spread to their neighbors and others that they should have a spirit of peacefulness and spirit of respect for others," said Father Springer. 1419

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After eight weeks of rehabilitation, SeaWorld San Diego rescue teams release seven rescued sea lions back into the ocean. Six of the sea lions were malnourished pups when they were first rescued. It took rescue crews about two months to help them regain their strength and nutrients needed. The seventh sea lion was discovered on La Jolla Shores with a shark bite wound to his shoulder. Rescue crews tell 10News they watched him for three days and then took him to their veterinarians because they noticed he wasn't using his left fin at all. After x-rays, SeaWorld San Diego vets discovered several broken bones in his front left fin and his left shoulder was snapped in half. Intense rehabilitation over the past eight weeks has him in good condition to return to the wild Tuesday. During the rescue return trip, General Hospital actress and dedicated animal advocate Carolyn Hennesy joined. Hennesy works closely with the SeaWorld San Diego rescue center and often joins them on return trips. As part of tradition, before animals are released, Hennesy said a few words to the sea lions, "Considering myself part of the SeaWorld family, I will say it was wonderful having you." All seven were released into the ocean about an hour from shore. SeaWorld San Diego tells 10News they've rescued over 600 animals in 2019 already including, 137 sea lions. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman is searching for the hero who saved her from drowning after a cliff dive at Sunset Cliffs.“I think the ocean really taught me a lesson that day. It really did,” Justice Arreguin said.It happened a week ago Sunday.Arreguin was with some friends when she jumped off the cliff into the water. The first jump was fine, she said. But when she jumped the second time, it almost killed her.The big waves pulled her under and tossed her around. She couldn't breathe.“Then this guy he just popped out of nowhere and he was like 'you have to stay calm. Try to stay calm,'" Arreguin said. "And so I did and after a while, he jumped in the water when it was safe."The man pulled justice out.
