WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A recent study found that low vitamin D levels are significantly more prevalent in obese children and are associated with risk factors for type 2 diabetes. This study was accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.High rates of vitamin D deficiency have been found in obese populations and past studies have linked low vitamin D levels to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. But the mechanisms by which obesity and its comorbidities are related to vitamin D deficiency are not fully known. This new study examined associations between vitamin D levels and dietary habits in obese children, and tested whether there were correlations between vitamin D levels and markers of abnormal glucose metabolism and blood pressure. In this study, researchers measured vitamin D levels, blood sugar levels, serum insulin, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure in 411 obese subjects and 87 control non-overweight subjects. Study participants were also asked to provide dietary information including daily intake of soda, juice and milk, average daily fruit and vegetable intake, and whether or not they routinely skipped breakfast. BMI is a measurement of body fat calculated from weight and height."Our study found that obese children with lower vitamin D levels had higher degrees of insulin resistance," said Micah Olson, of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and lead author of the study. "Although our study cannot prove causation, it does suggest that low vitamin D levels may play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes.""Poor dietary habits such as skipping breakfast and increased soda and juice intake were associated with the lower vitamin D levels seen in obese children," said Olson. "Future studies are needed to determine the clinical significance of lower vitamin D levels in obese children ... and whether treatment with vitamin D can improve primary clinical endpoints such as insulin resistance. WELLINGTON, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's geothermal scientists will be collaborating with the world's leading geothermal researchers after the country joins an elite international group next month.New Zealand would be admitted to the International Partnership for Geothermal Technology (IPGT) in Melbourne, Australia, on Nov. 16, Science and Innovation Minister Wayne Mapp announced Wednesday."Geothermal energy is one of our most important renewable energy resources with huge potential for growth," said Mapp."This recognition of our geothermal research programs will allow our scientists to collaborate with an elite group of researchers in the United States, Australia, Switzerland and Iceland."Scientists from New Zealand research organizations were committed to finding new ways to harness the country's extensive geothermal fields, said Mapp."Innovation and clean energy is a big part of enabling New Zealand to grow the economy," said Mapp."This new international partnership will help keep us at the forefront of technology developments such as enhanced geothermal systems."Established in 2008, the IPGT seeks to develop advanced, cost- effective geothermal energy technologies through international research co-operation.New Zealand's geothermal electricity generation rose by 21 percent last year and accounted for 13 percent of total electricity generation, its highest recorded level. The government is aiming to expand geothermal energy with three large geothermal projects in the pipeline by 2020.The country's biggest geothermal project is to be Contact Energy's 250-megawatt Tauhara II geothermal project. The project, being developed northeast of the central North Island town of Taupo, is expected to produce enough electricity to meet the needs of around 270,000 homes when it becomes fully operational in 2015.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Google is running a secret research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the tech giant invests to experiment and invent what may be world-changing technologies for the future, U.S. media reported on Monday.According to The New York Times, at the lab dubbed Google X, engineers are working at some 100 projects from robots, smart refrigerators to Internet-enabled dinner plates and a "space elevator," a proposed non-rocket space launch structure. An unnamed Google engineer familiar with the lab told the newspaper that it was run as mysteriously as the CIA with two officers, a nondescript one for logistics on the company's Mountain View campus and one for robots in a secret location.Scientists working at the lab include many roboticists and electrical engineers hired from Microsoft, Nokia labs, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon and New York University. Google's co-founder Sergey Brin is said to be "deeply involved" in Google X.The lab is reportedly headed by Sebastian Thrun, one of the world's top robotics and artificial intelligence experts. He teaches computer science at Stanford University and invented the world's first self-driving car.A Google spokeswoman would not confirm the existence of the lab, but said Google likes to invest in speculative projects."While the possibilities are incredibly exciting, please do keep in mind that the sums involved are very small by comparison to the investments we make in our core businesses," she told The New York Times.

SEOUL, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Samsung Electronics, the world's largest flat screen TV vendor, said Tuesday that it has suspended its plan to develop active shutter three-dimensional (3D) TVs with RealD, the U.S.-based 3D technology supplier."Samsung has decided to focus on our own initiatives of 3D technology, and continues to research and develop next-generation 3D display technologies, including a glasses-free 3D solution for the home," the tech firm said in an e-mailed statement. The active shutter 3D technology drew public attention after Samsung reached a deal with RealD earlier this year to jointly develop such technology, aiming to unveil 3D TVs based on the technology early next year. The active shutter is a next generation 3D technology that incorporates merits from both shutter-glass (SG) technology, which Samsung adopted, and film patterned retarder (FPR) technology, which LG introduced in December last year. The SG technology has been touted as better picture quality and deeper 3D images, but the eyewear is heavier because it requires batteries and chips to work. The active shutter 3D technology moved its function of 3D image creation from eyewear to flat panel, making the eyewear lighter.Despite the upgraded technology and its convenience, Samsung decided to focus on its existing SG technology as the global TV market is grappling with weak demand. The penetration rate, which gauges the ratio of 3D sets against the total flat screen TVs, was expected to rise to 9.9 percent by year-end from the 3 percent a year earlier, according to Woori Investment & Securities, a local securities firm.

JERUSALEM, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A recent study carried out by Israeli researchers showed that the experience of motherhood is caused by alterations in the brain functions that help mothers locate and communicate with their offspring, especially if they are in distress.Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem said the results provide insight into how neural changes in response to odors and sounds help maternal behaviors develop in mothers."We know that distinct brain changes are linked with motherhood, " Dr. Adi Mizrahi, who conducted the research, said, "but the impact of these changes on sensory processing and the emergence of maternal behaviors are largely unknown."Mizrahi and his colleagues examined whether the primary auditory cortex -- a region in the brain that is involved in the recognition of sounds -- might serve to process the responses to their offspring's specific smell and voice. The research proved that the olfactory and auditory senses of female mice with their pups were triggered immediately after they gave birth, with especially strong responses to cries of distress."These processes help to explain how changes in the cortex in the brain facilitate efficient detection of pups," Mizrahi said.
