CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - In August, Dean Riggott watched as his wife Karen fell off a Bird Scooter, her head crashing into the pavement. "It's been the most traumatic experience in my entire life," said Dean.Doctors initially told Dean that his wife likely wouldn't survive; she fractured her skull in 10 different places and was in a coma. "They were asking me to quite honestly start to get stuff in order, they didn't feel she would make it out of the first few days," remembers Dean.But each day, Karen continued to beat the odds. By day 32 she was out of the coma and began to show movement in her hands and feet. Weeks later, she was in rehab beginning to walk. "I didn't really know exactly what happened and I was in pain, I still am in pain, but I'm capable of moving, and my memory is good!" said Karen.After 69 days in the hospital and rehab, Karen was finally able to go home on Friday. "I'm the happiest man on this planet. I tell her every day thank you for being my wife, every day. I'm the most fortunate man in the world, I get to keep loving her," said Dean. Karen says each of her milestones gives her more hope and strength.She'll continue her recovery in rehab. 1195

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Video shows a frantic rescue effort in Chula Vista after a car went off Interstate 5, leaving two adults and a child trapped upside down. “We got a kid! We got a kid! Oh my god,” said Jay Corona, one of the good Samaritans who rushed to help when they spotted the overturned car near H Street around 10 a.m. Corona and his girlfriend Priscilla Valdovinos were on their way to a salon when they came across the wreck. “I was shocked, I was nervous, I was scared, all that,” said Valdovinos. "Somebody's in there. Somebody's in there."Smoke was rushing from the muffler so furiously Corona thought the car would explode. He saw the family hanging upside down by their seat belts and was able to save a mother and her young child. However, the front door of the sedan was stuck. “It wouldn't open. Because it was really jammed. I just kept pulling and pulling, and then the next thing I know I yanked it open,” Corona said. “I got it open and [the grandma] was in the front seat like, traumatized. She was like, 'Help me please, my back is hurting.'” RELATED: Good Samaritan recovering after getting hit by carValdovinos and Corona said the sedan hydroplaned in wet weather. With the help of other drivers, Corona escorted the grandmother back to the roadway. She was shaken up, but not seriously injured. Corona, who works as a security guard at a North Park bar, says his training kicked in. “I was very proud. He makes me proud every day! I fall in love with him every day, but today I told him, this is one that I'll remember,” said Valdovinos. The couple was struck by how many other people stopped to help. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian died and others, including children, were injured Monday in a crash involving a construction truck in Chula Vista. The truck driver lost control about 1:15 p.m. in the 500 block of 4th Ave near Shasta Street, police said. The location is a residential street near Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista. The truck hit parked cars including a black pickup, which then struck a pedestrian before flipping over, said officers.Paramedics took the pedestrian to the hospital with critical injuries. The victim, an 81-year-old, later died, police confirmed. A mother and her two children, a baby and a girl, were in a parked car and suffered minor injuries. Chula Vista police are investigating the cause of the crash. At this time, police say it's unclear whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. 844

(KGTV) - A growing number of San Diego County high school students are being recruited to act as drug mules for Mexican cartels, the U.S. Attorney for San Diego said Tuesday.The most recent charges were filed against Philip Junior Webb, a former student at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista. Federal prosecutors accuse Webb of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and bringing in unlawful aliens, including a Mexican national and Chinese national, for financial gain.“We are seeing a very troubling trend and we want to warn parents and high schoolers,” said U.S. Attorney Sherri Walker Hobson.According to court documents, Webb was a high school senior who recruited other students to smuggle methamphetamine and Fentanyl into the United States on multiple occasions.On each occasion, the juveniles had drugs strapped on their bodies as they attempted to enter the United States, investigators said.“This is a dangerous trend because this is no longer a situation where it’s the guy with the tattoos on the corner parking lot recruiting people to do drug deals. This is someone who is one of the students. He’s one of the students. He could be your lab partner. He could be the guy next door. He could be the girl next door in the school locker area,” said Walker Hobson.Webb is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.In an unrelated incident, another high school student was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine at San Ysidro High School.  Agents said they found five kilograms of methamphetamine in the student’s back seat. 1595

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) --  Thursday was a big day for Norbert Stein. The Holocaust survivor and war veteran, got married and turned 105-years-old. 10News Photojournalist Zach Wonderlie was there for his big day. "He's been in and out of hospitals so many times that I thought I was planning a memorial...and then I was planning a wedding!" said Norbert's daughter, Livia Gail, "It's such a miracle." Norbert escaped Nazi Germany in 1935, Gail said.Norbert married the love of his life Thursday - his girlfriend of 45 years, Edlemira Velasquez. The happy couple enjoyed the ceremony, a little cake and all of their loved ones on their milestone day. Gail left us with a few words of wisdom from her father: "Nothing too big, nothing too small.
