SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chollas View elementary school was placed on lockdown Wednesday after reports of an armed man nearby.San Diego Police were called to the area of 45th and Market streets at about 9:30 a.m. over the reported suspect. Chollas-Mead Elementary School was placed on lockdown as police searched the area.Officers arrested an armed man at the scene and were searching for a second suspect who fled the scene, believed to possibly be armed as well, police said.Chollas-Mead Elementary's lockdown was lifted as of 11 a.m. while police continued their search.The outstanding suspect is described as a 6-foot-tall black man, in his 20s, last seen wearing a black shirt and light blue pants, SDPD told City News Service. 736
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old has been arrested after being shot by a store clerk he was trying to rob, San Diego Police say.According to police, Hector Lopez-Gastelum entered the La Michoacana store on the 700 block of Vesta Street around 10:40 a.m. on October 18 demanding cash. Police say Lopez-Gastelum was armed with a handgun.After the clerk handed over the cash, the suspect reportedly demanded that a second register be opened.“While Lopez-Gastelum was still in the store, the clerk shot him twice in the torso with his own handgun, which is legally owned,” police said.The clerk then retrieved Lopez-Gastelum’s handgun and called 911. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chula Vista World War II veteran celebrated the 100th birthday of a lifetime, with help from hundreds of strangers.The celebration was made possible through Arthur Brook, a 9-year-old dedicated to preserving the stories of WWII veterans. He's been interviewing veterans living at the Veterans Home of California, Chula Vista"Since they were at least in their 90's, to be registered in the military during WWII, they wouldn't be here for much longer," said Arthur.When Arthur learned Army veteran Edwin Schwimmer was turning 100 in September, he wanted to give him a special gift. "We quickly made a decision to make it the most special birthday in a long time!" the 9-year-old added.Arthur put out a call requesting birthday cards and received hundreds from around the country. "So many people thought to send him cards, I just wanted to thank them all, who sent cards to Edwin Schwimmer to thank him for his service to our country," said Arthur. Schwimmer was stunned at the number of people who took the time to write him a letter. "There's no words I can express how I feel," said Schwimmer, "I'm the luckiest guy in the world, the luckiest guy in the world."Arthur says he'll continue his mission to interview as many WWII veterans as possible. 1277
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A brother and sister who own two Rancho Bernardo nail salons were arraigned Thursday on federal charges they were part of a forced labor conspiracy. Cindy Mydung Luu and Jason Luu lured their second cousin from Vietnam to San Diego in 2014 to work long hours in their salons, Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon, prosecutors said. The woman arrived on a student visa and attended Grossmont College, but applied for a spouse visa after marrying Jason Luu in 2016. Prosecutors said the siblings “engaged in a scheme intended to cause the victim to believe she would suffer financial and reputational harm if she did not continue working.” The siblings own Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon in Rancho Bernardo.“We are very grateful that this matter came to the attention of the Human Trafficking Task Force upon the suggestion and support of two caring and vigilant nail salon customers who had befriended the victim,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “With their assistance, Task Force officers were able to assist the victim immediately and to investigate these alleged crimes.” The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division also investigated the defendants’ nail salon for minimum wage and overtime violations, according to prosecutors.The Luu’s were arrested at their home in Tierrasanta Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two major freeway connectors in San Diego will be closed overnight for routine maintenance, Caltrans announced.The southbound Interstate 5 connector to eastbound state Route 52 near La Jolla and the southbound Interstate 15 connector to westbound Interstate 8 in the Mission Valley East area will both be closed at 3 a.m. Saturday, with the I-15 closure expected to reopen at 8:30 a.m. and the I-5 closure set to reopen at 9 a.m.Caltrans crews will be performing landscape maintenance at the I-5 junction with SR-52. Those needing to head east on from the interstate to the highway will be directed to drive past the closed junction, exit at Clairemont Drive, get on northbound I-5 and then take SR-52 east.The closure in Mission Valley will allow Caltrans crews to make electrical repairs. Signs on southbound I-15 during the repair work will direct drivers to exit the interstate at El Cajon Boulevard and reenter the northbound lanes of I-15 to connect with westbound I-8.Caltrans reminded drivers to be work-zone alert by avoiding distracted driving, paying attention to traffic and slowing down when approaching work zones. 1154
