VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The man who tried to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in front of her Encinitas home was sentenced Monday to seven years in jail.Jeremiah Owens, 28, grabbed the girl and pinned her to the ground as she waxed her surfboard in front of her home on Neptune Ave in July 2017.Owens tried to drag the girl to a nearby pickup truck occupied by Christopher White, but the girl was able to break free and run home.White was arrested two days after the assault when a witness matched his pickup truck to the description of one which deputies wanted to find. WARREN, Michigan — Police are looking for thieves who stole nine brand new Dodge Ram pickup trucks in a Michigan town.The vehicles were stolen just before 4 a.m. local time Thursday. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – A group of teenage girls attempted to set a trap for a 32-year-old man who tried to meet one of them for sex, according to San Diego County sheriff’s officials. According to sheriff’s officials, deputies responded to a reported kidnapping at 1385 East Vista Way in Vista around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. A group of juveniles told responding deputies they used a social media app to contact “an older man who was looking for underaged girls to have sex with. The group hoped to expose the male and turn over the information to law enforcement agencies for prosecution.” Sheriff’s officials said the group made contact with Robert Dreyfus on the app and exchanged text messages. A meeting location was established at a shopping center at 1385 East Vista Way. Officials said that “Dreyfus arrived and convinced the 17-year-old victim to get into his vehicle to talk,” but he then drove away with the girl without consent. According to officials, the girl was able to message her friends for help, and they contacted authorities. Deputies made contact with Dreyfus, and he stopped his vehicle near the 2000 block of East Vista Way. The girl got out of his vehicle and was not hurt, officials said. Dreyfus was arrested by responding deputies and booked into Vista jail on suspicion of kidnapping, sending harmful matter to a minor and communication with a minor for specific offenses. Online, hundreds of groups that set up stings, hoping to expose child predators. “This was really dangerous and something that’s best left to professionals in law enforcement,” said criminal defense attorney Jan Ronis. Ronis said the teens’ actions could complicate the criminal case. “Normally, law enforcement runs these operations. The solicitation is recorded. The coversations, the meeting places are surveilled. This is a bunch of kids.” Dreyfus’ bail was set at 5,000, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's inmate information. He’s due to appear in court next week. 1998

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.— The new virtual school year comes with challenges for many students, but one nonprofit is teaming up with a Virginia Beach business to help give kids the space they need to succeed.“When children have a place to sit down and learn, they’re going to do much better,” said George Melnyk Jr., President of Premier Millwork and Lumber Company.Melnyk’s wife, Kim, is a Virginia Beach School Board member. They decided to take on a project to make desks for CHIP, a child readiness non-profit advocacy program.“They’re going primarily to low-income homes, kids that just need a desk,” said Trish O’Brien, President of CHIP of South Hampton Roads.Machines and manpower are churning out the pieces that will become desks for hundreds of CHIP families.There’s no hardware, no tools, just four pieces that easily interlock in under a minute to create a temporary space that a child can call their own at no cost to mom and dad.“At the end of the day, they can disassemble them, slide them under the couch, stick them in the closet, put them away for the weekend, and then the next day, put them back together and be ready to work,” said Melnyk.Each desk cost .50 to build thanks to employees who are donating their time to keep labor costs at zero.Last Saturday, the crew built 110 desks. WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Tuesday -- a city still reeling from social unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake. Democratic Nominee Joe Biden has not visited yet although he said he was looking into it on Monday. Trump's visit to Kenosha comes days after the president stopped in Louisiana following the landfall of Hurricane Laura. But do presidential visits during a crisis help or hurt the community? "If I was doing his security, I would advise against it," Grant Whitus, a retired SWAT team leader in Colorado said. Whitus has protected presidents in the past and is a Trump supporter. Whitus says when a president comes to town, hundreds of officers need to be reassigned. "Their resources are already stretched to the max trying to deal with this," Whitus added. Many Wisconsin leaders feel the same way. Gov. Tony Evers (D) of Wisconsin wrote to the president unsuccessfully asking him to cancel his trip. Visits to areas in crisis have been a signature of Trump's since taking office. During his 2016 campaign, Trump visited Louisiana and their flood devastation a full four days before siting President Barack Obama made the trip. When asked if Trump was visiting Kenosha for political reasons, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said no. "The president is showing up to see hurting Americans," McEnany said.
