DENVER, Colo. – At Stoney’s Bar and Grill in Denver, the entire front of the house is trying something new for the new year: giving up alcohol. Well, at least for the first 31 days of 2020. “I probably spent a thousand bucks every two weeks on booze,” said bartender Adam Farrenkopf. In attempt to save his money and his health, Farrenkopf is participating in what’s called “Dry January” – an international health movement urging people to abstain from alcohol for the first month of the year. “Being a bartender, it’s hard to not drink,” Farrenkopf said. “It’s a testament to myself and we’ll see what happens.” Dry January started a few years ago in the U.K. and quickly spread to the U.S. And it’s catching on fast. A recent study by Nielsen found just over one-fifth of Americans took part in Dry January last year and 83% of those people said they planned on doing it again this year. But is doing this DIY detox right for you?“I think America has a love-hate relationship with alcohol,” said professor Tricia Hudson-Matthew, an addiction specialist with MSU Denver. She says giving up drinking has multiple benefits. “I would say financial, we spend a lot of money on it,” Hudson-Matthew said. “When we’re talking about health wise, we’re talking about better sleeping, better eating, better skin care.” To stay committed while going cold turkey, Hudson-Matthew says to have a plan in place like recruiting friends – or at least let them know what you’re doing. “When you take something away from an individual, you also have to replace it with something,” she said. “If there isn’t something that’s replacing it, then chances are, they are going to relapse and go right back to it.” Back at the bar, not everyone feels they need to give up drinking. “Nope. No Dry January for me,” said patron Jacque Lynn. “I’m pretty confident in my drinking abilities and not to drink when I need to not drink.”For people like Farrenkopf, however, they plan on taking this break from booze past the end of the month, and hangout without the hangover. 2060

Exterminators are finding COVID control’s a growing new business.Businesses are getting more aggressive about keeping space for workers and customers sanitized and safe.Truly Nolen Pest Control realized it already had an effective COVID killer it had been using to clean up after rat infestations.Mark Ringlestetter with Truly Nolen says, “So at that point, we decided to build a program that would be good for sanitizing surfaces.”So Truly Nolen worked out procedures for a program called Truly Sanitized, developed training and pushed out a new product. Other pest control companies have gone into COVID control too.Right now Ringlestetter says Truly’s charging about two hundred dollars an hour.Ringlestetter says, “Let's take a call center for instance, and you go in and it's ready to go and then you know there's somebody there and you're doing desktops and wiping down keyboards and, you know, creating hard surfaces on chairs then it could go relatively quickly we're moving around a lot of things and we're doing a lot of prep work in advance that, then, that certainly would slow it down.”The product does not have a long term germ killing effect but Truly Nolen’s working on a process that will because even if COVID-19 doesn’t last our extra interest in sanitizing probably will.“I would imagine that it's changed everyone's perception of how, how to protect yourself even against things like the common, the common cold or even the flu. Studies show the greatest risk for a data breach is employee negligence. “Somewhere between 85 and 95 percent of successful attacks on organizations now stem from phishing,” cybersecurity expert Ross Jordan said. Ross Jordan with High Touch Technologies says phishing is a way for foreign groups or companies to gain private information from a company by targeting the employee usually through email. Scammers have become advanced enough to appear as a person or organization you trust asking for your password or credit card number. “Phishing is something that’s usually sent out by bots. Literally just blasted out to hundreds if not thousands of emails at a time. And they’re hoping for that one na?ve person to follow the link, and when they do, you’re literally opening the doors to the kingdom,” Jordan said. Employees are often tricked because the email contains a reactionary ask telling somebody they need to share personal information right away. “They’re taking advantage of our human nature. And when somebody needs your help, and somebody needs an action from you, you want to respond, you want to do something,” Jordan said. According to Jordan, the best way to prevent these attacks is to train your employees. Commercial General Contractor, Pinkard Construction, is one company leading by example. Technology Manager Eric Schmeer says models that used to be on paper have now become fully digitized using laser scanners, drones and 360 degree cameras. “All of these devices, all this information, it’s all computerized, it’s all digital, it’s all connected to the internet. And so when you’re running these multi-million dollar projects and all that information is digital, it’s really, really important to protect it,” Schmeer said. For that reason, Pinkard Construction takes time to educate its employees on what an attack could look like. “Teach people just the fundamentals about how to analyze an email, and determine whether it looks phishy or not. And what to do when they’re not sure about links and whether they should click them, and how to figure out where they go,” Schmeer said. The company also fosters an environment where employees are encouraged to come forward with questions. “Nobody is ever hesitant to forward an entire technology team here and say ‘Hey is this legitimate? Can I click this link? What’s gonna happen here?’” Knowing you could be just one click away from killing your company, it’s always OK to ask for help. “Just ask. It’s very simple. The good news is, there are several things shoppers can do to make sure no one else gets your package except you.“Know when your package is getting delivered,” said Torres. “Don’t order and be going out of town for a couple of days when you were waiting for a package to arrive.”Torres says people should be monitoring delivery updates and be sure to grab their package once it’s delivered. She says shoppers can often times track and reroute packages online or through an app so they arrive when they are ready to pick them up.“A lot of the courier services from FedEx to UPS will let you reroute, and they can either hold them at their hub or they can hold them at a retail store.”That’s exactly what Amy Dallam is doing this holiday season. “One of the things I do is I sign up for text notifications of the delivery status so I know when it’s approaching and I can maybe delay an errand or something,” explained Dallam.If you’re not home during a delivery, experts say it’s a good idea to ask a neighbor to hold onto your package.
