Beavers have been gnawing away at one of the towns parks in South Windsor, Connecticut.The animals have left the people divided. Some of them are very upset after learning the animals were trapped and possibly killed.As much as people didn’t want these beavers to be hurt, town officials say the beavers were causing too much damage to the park. Beavers are known to chew up trees and build dams on the water, which was happening at South Windsor’s Nevers Road Park.“They’ve been cutting down a lot of trees and I can understand because they’re very destructive,” said Yvette Smith of South Windsor.Homeowners by the water worried about potential flooding along Lake Avenue.Trees were ruined and on the brink of falling over on the trail that’s closed for repairs.But the animals also grew a fair share of supporters.“We need to learn how to coexist. We have wonderful wildlife we have to consider and if there were better options I at least would’ve liked them at least explored,” said Carrie Morse of South Windsor.“(My daughter) was texting me while I was at the meeting. ‘Mom, please do what you can to save those beavers,’ so it was a rough discussion this morning before she went to school when she found out they were no longer there,” said Carrie Morse.On Tuesday afternoon, the town manager says if the beavers were trapped and killed, it ultimately happened through the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection agency.“No matter what we do we’re in trouble. If you do nothing and somebody does get hurt and does get a public safety issue, somebody attacked by beavers,” said South Windsor Town Manager Matthew Galligan.Galligan said DEEP allows 1,500 beaver kills a year.“If you don’t protect the park you’re not going to have anything,” said Smith.Town officials say the trail at Nevers Road Park will be back open in about a week. 1871

At Dayton Consolidated School in Maine, one student has inspired a big change to the curriculum. Morey Belanger, a 6-year-old kindergartener, is the school's first deaf student. To make her feel welcome, the school embraced the opportunity to teach all the students some sign language.Sign language posters now line the walls of hallways, and students have learned how to sign more than 20 words including colors, letters and words related to school."Morey -- without even knowing it -- has taught us so much," said school Principal Kimberly Sampietro. "She has brought a culture to our building that we didn't have before."The school installed a hearing assistive system and implemented extra teacher training to incorporate sign language into every classroom, including core subjects, music and computer class. Sampietro said many teachers also began using their free time to watch sign language videos and read books on special education.The kindergarten class is also getting some help from Morey."Morey helped all of them to learn the alphabet," Sampietro said. "The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her."Morey's mom, Shannon Belanger, said her family has been blown away by how supportive the school has been."I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed," Belanger said. "I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it's fun."To celebrate the students' hard work, the school invited a real-life princess who knows sign language to come speak to students this week."We wanted to show our students that this isn't something they can only speak with Morey," said Principal Sampietro, who said most students in their rural Maine school have not encountered many people with hearing impairment. "We wanted to show them that signing happens in all kinds of settings."Morey's mom said she loves art and performing. SquareMouth, an insurance company that provides travel coverage, launched a contest last month that stated that the first person to contact the company would win a ,000 prize. The catch was that the contest's announcement was buried within the fine print of an insurance contract. Donelan Andrews of Georgia read about the contest on Page 7 of her insurance contract. It only took 23 hours after the contest began for SquareMouth to find a winner. According to the company, it had sold 73 policies with contest information before Andrews contacted them. Andrews said in a press release that she, as a home economics and family consumer science teacher, emphasizes reading the fine print to her students. “I used to put a question like that midway through an exam, saying ‘If you’re reading this, skip the next question.’ That caught my eye and intrigued me to keep reading," she said. SquareMouth launched the contest as a way to highlight the importance of reading the details of a contract. "Over the past 16 years, we’ve learned that many travelers buy travel insurance and just assume they’re covered if anything goes wrong, without actually reading the details of their policy," the company said in a release. "However, this often leads to claims for losses that are not covered.
