DOVER, Del. (AP) — Erik Moses has been named president of Nashville Superspeedway. He's the first Black man to hold that title at any NASCAR track. (KGTV) - Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon is working to put up a handful of so-called emergency sleeping cabins on their property.“They are different from tiny homes,” Pastor Rolland Slade said, pointing out that they don’t have running water or a kitchen. “They are essentially a shelter for someone living in homelessness to actually sleep behind a locked close door and be comfortable.”Slade says they have bathrooms on the property as well as a kitchen. They are looking to install a shower or perhaps bring them in through outside organizations.The emergency cabins are 144 sq feet, of which 96 square feet is livable space.“The village we are looking to build is going to focus on veteran women with children who are living in homelessness in El Cajon,” Slade says.Slade says they will find their clients through organizations that work with the homeless. The homes are not meant to be permanent housing, and families will be allowed to stay for 90 days.The church is working with a group called Amikas, as well as the city.El Cajon city officials have given the pilot program the green light through December 31, 2023. However, city officials say “permits are required, and the “emergency housing” must be operated by an organization experienced/proficient.”There is one cabin on the property. (KGTV) — El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells said he plans to call for a special City Council meeting on Friday to discuss instructing local police officers not to enforce coronavirus-related regulations."The people of El Cajon are suffering and it is highly unfair and nonsensical that big box stores, grocery stores, club stores and now even schools are open while nail salons, restaurants, churches, and other businesses and organizations are shuttered," Wells wrote on Facebook. "My people are suffering from not only financial ruin, but many are enduring severe depression, anxiety, isolation, and many other emotional, spiritual and sociological deprivations as a result of this stunning governmental overreach."Wells wrote that he will propose that the El Cajon Police Department stop enforcing mask, non-essential business, and social distancing laws.Speaking with ABC 10News, Wells said that he understands that the county and state may continue to hand out fines or criminal charges on businesses despite the stance. DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. – A judge on Friday sentenced Alec McKinney, the juvenile suspect in the May 2019 STEM School shooting, to life in prison with the possibility of parole following a day of emotional testimony from people who were at the school that day and from McKinney himself.Judge Jeffrey K. Holmes handed down the sentence Friday afternoon after a day-long sentencing hearing. He sentenced McKinney to life, with the possibility of parole, for the first-degree murder after deliberation charge for the killing of Kendrick Castillo.He also received 16 years in prison to run concurrently for seven attempted murder charges, 14 years for a conpsiracy to commit first-degree murder charge, and several years in prison for other charges. The 14-year sentence runs consecutively, as do some others, bringing the total charges to 139 1/2 years, with 38 years running consecutively to his murder sentence.McKinney, 17, pleaded guilty in early February to more than a dozen felonies, including first-degree murder, in connection with the shooting, which happened May 7 last year at STEM School Highlands Ranch just three days before seniors were set to finish high school.Castillo, 18, was killed in the shooting and six other students were wounded. Court documents released last summer gave the most detailed account of how the shooting unfolded and what has happened in the months since the shooting.The court heard hours of emotional testimony from students and teachers who knew Kendrick, and some who knew McKinney, regarding why they felt like McKinney deserved the maximum sentence.Since McKinney is a juvenile, he was not eligible for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
