MAUI, Hawaii (AP) — Authorities say the man killed by a shark in Hawaii this weekend was a 65-year-old resident of California.Shark warning signs are posted Sunday in the Ka'anapali Beach Park area on Maui where the man died.Witness Allison Keller tells Hawaii News Now that the man appeared unconscious as rescuers brought him to shore Saturday.Keller says the victim was missing his left leg from the knee down and skin was torn from his wrist.Hawaii's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement confirmed the man's age but did not release his name. Officials didn't say where in California he was from.The man's family told rescuers he had gone swimming in the area.The last fatal shark attack in Hawaii was in 2015, when a snorkeler off Maui was killed. 773

MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — As early as next week, you could start to see an improvement in the water quality in Martin County.Officials plan to start cleaning up some of the areas most impacted by algae. They hope to give residents some relief from the sight and smell of the algae and help the estuary recover from its damaging effects.Martin County Ecosystem Division Manager John Maehl said because the county declared a local state of emergency earlier this week, it can more quickly obtain grant funds from the Department of Environmental Protection to pay for and expedite clean up efforts.The plan is to get contracted clean up crews on the water early next week, possibly by Tuesday. Even before declaring the state of emergency, county officials had been interviewing and researching companies with technology they say can clean up the algae, without creating more harm to the environment.By next week, Maehl said at least a couple are prepared to get to work.In at least one case, they would be vacuuming the algae from the water.Exactly where the clean up will happen is unclear, but Maehl said the county has been surveying the area, looking to create a priority list of the places they will send crews to first.That could be areas such as Central Marine, typically hit hard by the thickest of the algae.“The really nasty stuff, try to get that out and take away the most noxious component of this and then let the estuary do its thing. The estuary is remarkably resilient,” Maehl said.This is the first year the county has taken on algae clean up effort, so it is a learning experience.“It’s a really complicated issue with a lot of different solutions and really the approach we’re taking is we’re throwing a lot of stuff against the wall and see what sticks,” Maehl said.Stuart resident Teresa Cooper is among those glad to see action being taken.She lives right along the water and can smell the stench of the algae while walking her dog.“I don’t walk him over there, so I just kind of keep him on the side, because it’s bothering me, I’m sure it’s bothering him,” Cooper said. “It hurts your throat and just smells very bad."Maehl said the county also hopes, by next week, to place booms in strategic areas to hold and collect algae. Lots of folks do their shopping on the internet these days, especially on Amazon. Not only because it's convenient, but you can find some great bargains. But wait until you hear how much a woman in Gallatin, Tennessee was charged for some paper plates. It was certainly no deal. Lorie Galloway said she does a lot of shopping on Amazon. She's a Prime member and told Scripps station WTVF in Nashville, "I don't order anything unless it's free shipping." Just before Christmas, Galloway bought some plates. Then her husband, Bob Galloway, got the bill."He sent me a text," Lorie Galloway recalled. "'What did you order at Amazon?' And, I'm like, 'What?' He said, 'Our bill is a thousand and something dollars.'"Now these plates she bought were not the kind you keep in a china cabinet. These were heavy duty paper plates. A hundred of them. Lorie Galloway said she thought she was getting for with free shipping. It turns out, the plates were ."But there was a ,080 shipping charge," Bob Galloway explained.It cost more than ,000 to ship a package of paper plates. "I mean that's just crazy for paper plates," Lorie Galloway said.And, her husband added, "I really thought it was some clerical error."The Galloways repeatedly tried contacting the seller and got no response. So they called Amazon about the charge."The reaction from the customer service representative at Amazon was, 'Wow, that's ridiculous,'" Bob Galloway said. So were these plates coming from somewhere half way around the world? No, according to the paperwork, they were shipped by UPS from Atlanta. Amazon eventually agreed to open an investigation and the company told Lorie Galloway they'd determined she  was "not overcharged for the transaction."Lorie Galloway said she believed she was overcharged. According to Amazon, the seller said they'd "sent the plates with expedited service," that Lorie Galloway had selected that option when she placed her order and had agreed to the ,000+ shipping fee, something Galloway insists isn't true. "If it would have said a thousand and something dollars, I would have noticed that," she said. If you try finding the seller now who sold Lorie Galloway those plates, you won't. An Amazon rep told the couple the seller had been dismissed after doing similar things to other customers. But Amazon refused to confirm that for us.And Amazon was asked why it didn't have technology to flag and even prevent outrageous charges like this, the company refused to directly answer the question and instead sent a statement saying, "Amazon is constantly innovating and improving our customer experience. If customers have concerns or feedback, we encourage them to contact our Customer Service."But that's what the Galloways did and Amazon told them there was nothing they could do. Lorie Galloway said she is now reconsidering where she shops. "If they [Amazon] are not going to take care of their customers, why should I order from them again?" she said. The Galloways spent the last couple of months disputing the shipping charge with their credit card company.
