SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three dogs are getting a second chance at life. Wednesday night they were reunited with a local Marine - after months of being apart. Marine Corps Captain Kyle Watkins has been waiting months to see the dogs he rescued as puppies while stationed in Iraq. Wendy, Hesco and Rooster were flown to the states to be adopted by Watkins and another Marine with the help of SPCA International and Operation Baghdad Pups.Watkins says he couldn't help but feed and care for the dogs, who in turn began to look out for him; their big brown eyes and wagging tails bringing comfort during some rough times. Two of the dogs will stay with Watkins and his wife on their farm in Temecula, the third will be adopted by another Marine.  776

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are three year-round homeless tents set up in San Diego. Their long-term future could hinge on budget hearings that began Wednesday at City Hall.Several hundred of our homeless have beds, showers, warmth, a refrigerator for their medicine, and security for awhile. That could end, though.The shelter on Sports Arena Blvd. provides solely for veterans.RELATED: Clairemont residents hope to stop homeless housing projectAnother near Father Joe's Village at 15th and Commercial is open for women and children. Alpha Project, though, is at capacity every night, with waiting lists of 50 to 200, depending on the weather."Someone doesn't show up for bed check and that bed's rolled up; our outreach team goes out at 9 o'clock down the street and people cue up. Money currently comes from Housing Commission reserves but what happens after that runs out?Robert Clune said he hit rock bottom after being laid off from Nassco, living on the street for years. "23 people got laid off at Nassco. I was one of them and when I hit, I didn't get up and dust myself off and keep pushing," Clune said. "I basically just laid there."It's different now. "This right here is hope, for a lot of people and the process is good for me; the doors are just opening," Clune said. He's been a painter, a cement mason, a laborer. He said he's ready to work again.  The San Diego City Council should have the budget ready by June. 2198

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Unified School District and School Board President Kevin Beiser are holding a news conference Wednesday to discuss student safety in light of the Parkland shootings.The school officials will explain the district's plan to address the nationwide student-led walkout to protest government inaction to curb gun violence. President Beiser will also discuss a resolution he brought forth at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting demanding action from state and federal officials to reduce access to certain firearms. During the news conference, officials asked lawmakers in Sacramento to implement a 10 percent tax on firearms in California to help fund school safety programs. Watch the news conference in the player below:  785
