p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Helvetica}span.s1 {font-kerning: none}San Diego law enforcement officers are tapping into a nationwide database that uses a bullet's ‘fingerprint' to track crimes.The distinct markings left on a shell casing after it's fired provide an image that can be traced back to the gun from which the bullet was shot.There's an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives technology called National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, or NIBIN.The national digital database houses 3.3 million images of casings left at crime scenes all over the country.San Diego County, state and federal agencies can enter a casing and find out within 24 hours if there's a match in the system."We're catching the fingerprint from the firearm," said ATF Intelligence Specialist Tom Chimileski.If they get a hit, those identical spent shell casings have linked two different crimes to the same gun.ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice, who works with local police and Sheriff's units in San Diego County, calls the sharing of ballistic information "a game changer."Rice works with Escondido Police Gang Unit Detective Nicholas Rodelo on gun crime cases. They took 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt to the scene of a March 2016 murder case in Escondido.Surveillance video caught the car in an alley off Escondido Blvd. creeping toward the street, as the shooter stalked a rival gang member.After the shooter got out of his car and gunned down the man in the middle of a busy street, there were 12 shell casings left at the scene.The casings were collected and put into the NIBIN system.In the 24-hour window before the digital search could reveal a lead, the pair got a tip on where the gun could be. They recovered it and found the serial number was obliterated.Rice and Rodelo went to San Diego Sheriff's Department Criminologist Scott Hoopes for his expertise in serial restoration.Hoopes told 10News the metal underneath the serial number still reacts to certain acids. Even though it's completely smooth on the surface, Hoopes can sometimes manipulate the acid reactions and bring the number back. That's what Hoopes did with the gun.These technologies are putting a bull's eye on the bad guys. The NIBIN system's images have led to 110,000 hits giving investigators a wealth of knowledge from seemingly unrelated crimes, sometimes from the other side of the country, now connected by a firearm."Jurisdictions can't talk to each other but within our NIBIN system we're able to figure that out," said ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice.These hits allow investigators to get surveillance video, the makes of cars, license plates, or other pieces of evidence from one scene and use it in the other cases involving that same gun.That gets law enforcement much closer to finding the shooter and making the arrest.  See Kimberly Hunt's full report: 2873

Police said in a news conference Tuesday afternoon that investigators found "distractionary-type" devices in the backpack of a boy who shot himself inside Jackson Memorial Middle School near Canton, Ohio. Police said the devices were not explosives and they didn't find any devices that "would have done harm to others." Jackson Township middle school and high school students were dismissed for the day after the boy shot himself around 7:50 a.m. Authorities say the boy suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the boy's bathroom. Police say a Texas woman was not happy when she caught her husband of 11 years looking at another woman, so she allegedly stabbed him after attending a festival in San Antonio, the Express News reports. Star Perez, 27, was arrested on charges of suspicion of aggravated assault following the incident Saturday night. Police claim that after the couple returned home from the festival, Perez confronted her husband about looking at the woman. That is when she allegedly stabbed the man in the right arm. Perez then fled after allegedly threatening to kill her husband. Her bond was set at ,000 on Monday.  645

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Two sets of sisters graduated Marine Corps recruit training together, further strengthening their bonds.The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Parris Island, South Carolina, says one set includes Virginia sisters Ashley and Amber Valentine, while the other is comprised of Maria, Vanessa and Melissa Placido Jaramillo, who grew up in Nevada.According to MCRD, the Valentine sisters joined shortly after their grandfather passed away and wanted to carry on his legacy in the U.S. armed services.Ashley, 19, and Amber, 22, say having each other to rely on through training helped during some of their highest highs and lowest lows.“I went through a moment during first phase where I received some bad news in a letter, and she was there to be a shoulder for me to lean on,” Amber said in a press release posted to MCRD’s Facebook page.However, the Valentines won’t be attending combat training together, because Ashley suffered a hip fracture prior to graduation and must heal. After combat training, Amber plans to serve in the communications field and Ashley will be certified as a motor transportation operator.As for the Placido Jaramillo family, Maria, Vanessa and Melissa made a pact to join the military together when they were young children, according to MCRD. Melissa and Vanessa, both 22, are identical twins. Maria is a year younger than them at age 21.During recruit training, Melissa says the sisters succeeded thanks to friendly competition and daily positive affirmation.MCRD says the three sisters have yet to find out what military occupational specialty they will be assigned but are looking forward to what the Marine Corps has in store for them. (AP) — The U.S. government has distributed more than million in assistance for people displaced by the catastrophic wildfire in Northern California, a Federal Emergency Management Agency official said Monday as hundreds of searchers kept looking for more human remains.The massive wildfire that killed at least 85 people and destroyed nearly 14,000 homes in the town of Paradise and surrounding communities was fully contained over the weekend after igniting more than two weeks ago.FEMA spokesman Frank Mansell told The Associated Press that .5 million has been spent on housing assistance, including vouchers for hotel rooms. During an interview in the city of Chico, he said disaster response is in an early phase but many people will eventually get longer-term housing in trailers or apartments.FEMA also has distributed million to help with other needs, including funeral expenses, he said.About 17,000 people have registered with the federal disaster agency, which will look at insurance coverage, assets and other factors to determine how much assistance they are eligible for, Mansell said.Meanwhile, the list of people who are unaccounted for has dropped from a high of 1,300 to the "high 200s" Monday, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said.
