It was a feel-good story that captured hearts everywhere, but it turns out it was all a scam to get money.A homeless man gave his last to a woman stranded on a highway after she ran out of gas. To show their appreciation, the woman and her boyfriend started a GoFundMe page for the homeless man and raised more than 0,000. But in an unexpected twist, the couple and the homeless man are charged with making up the story in a scheme to get money.“[This] highlights the promise and the peril of these sites,” says Anna Laitin, with Consumer Reports. “These incredible stories come out; people really touched by this and obviously wanted to help, wanted to give money. Now it's not clear the story was true.”The website GoFraudMe tracks scams on personal crowdfunding sites and has found more than 200 cases in the past five years.Consumer Reports admits it can be a challenge to know if you're giving to a legitimate cause.“It’s really hard. You really have to read carefully and think,” Laitin says. “And maybe give to ones where you know the person personally or you know somebody who can vouch for it, because otherwise you can get caught up especially in these viral ones.”Also, pay attention to how much money is needed and how much has already been donated. If somebody's asking for ,000, and that's what they need, there's no reason to go far above that. For more information on how to report fraud crowdfunding sources or to learn more about other crowdfunding cases, visit GoFraudMe. 1507

It started out as a way to help her brother, and now, it's become so much more than that. Now one sister's efforts have made an impact far more than she could ever imagine. In their household, twins Sarah and Jacob Greichen are both included and involved. But one day after school a few years ago, Greichen realized outside the walls of their home, it was a different story."My brother got in and he was crying," Greichen said. "And he was saying, 'Mom I have no friends why don't I have any friends.'"Jacob has autism, and exclusion took its toll."He actually stopped talking completely," Greichen recalled. "He regressed, he went from probably a fourth, fifth, sixth-grade level to first-grade level and it was a really hard time for my family."Greichen decided to do something. And at 13 years old, she founded the non-profit Score A Friend, which builds clubs for students with and without intellectual disabilities in schools and communities."Every single kid meets friends through school or though activities and sports," Greichen said. "And Score A Friend is creating those opportunities for everyone. So that they can meet friends and then those friendships can go from school to home."Clubs can be focused on sports or electives, and one club even got the whole school involved with score a friend week."They talk about inclusion," Greichen said. "What unified sports are what person first language is what do you say when you walk up to a person with a disability and what is the right way to act."Now, Score A Friend has gone national, spreading to more than a dozen schools across the country, including at least two colleges."I mean now we have commercials and billboards out which is crazy!" Greichen exclaimed. "I mean, I never would have guessed this from the beginning."But for Greichen, her brother is the true measure of success."Jacob finally started talking again," Greichen said. "He started playing sports again he started talking to other students and he actually had people to sit with at lunch."Greichen sees Score A Friend becoming a movement. One inspired by the person closest to her, and impacting the whole world. 2151

It's a split! Players in Iowa and New York will share Saturday's massive Powerball jackpot. Two tickets matched all winning numbers on Saturday and the winners will split the estimated 7.8 million jackpot or a one-time cash option of 6.2 million -- the fourth largest in US lottery history. Each ticket is worth 3.9 million or 8.1 million cash. It's still unclear how many people won Powerball's top prize. The winning numbers drawn Saturday were 8, 12, 13, 19, 27 and the Powerball was 4.The total jackpot was slightly adjusted from an estimated 0 million based on the actual drawing sales. The largest Powerball jackpot was .586 billion and it was split three ways in January 2016.Saturday's total jackpot was surely mind-blowing. Just imagine, if you had it all in 0 bills it would make a stack nearly as high as the tallest tower in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, according to the Powerball website. The Burj Khalifa is twice the height of New York's Empire State Building and three times as tall as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.Powerball has paid out its top prize only seven times this year, lottery officials said. Before Saturday's drawing, there were 21 drawings without a winner. The last winning ticket that took home the jackpot was sold in New York in August. But don't throw away your ticket yet, there are plenty of secondary prizes. Lottery officials say two tickets in Florida and Texas won million and 13 others in nine states won million each. Each Powerball ticket is .
