SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported a record new 1,802 coronavirus cases on Friday, bringing the region's total to 78,159 cases thus far.The new cases resulted in an 8% positive rate out of 21,671 reported tests for the county's daily tally. No new deaths were reported on Friday, as the death toll sits at 996.The new case totals come as public and federal health officials urge the public to keep gatherings limited and small this Thanksgiving and not to travel.Hospitalizations in the county remained at 580 on Friday, while ICU cases rose slightly from 166 to 173 — both of which have nearly doubled since a month earlier, according to the county's data.There were 82 community outbreaks in San Diego County as of Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents in Sherman Heights are worried about a new homeless storage facility expected to open up in their neighborhood. The facility would reportedly go up on the corner of 20th and Commerical streets. It would have up to 1,000 individual storage bins. People in Sherman Heights say they don't want the facility to be an eyesore and were never consulted by the city. The facility would be similar to one that already exists on 16th Street. That facility provides lockers and storage bins for approximately 400 people. The facility is city-funded but run by the non-profit organization Think Dignity. The city is hosting a community forum about the storage facility on Friday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sherman Heights Community Center.  811

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County schools are one step closer to bringing students back to campus. If we get off the state’s watchlist Friday, kids would be allowed back in-person in as soon as two weeks.But, some districts tell ABC 10News they would still need more time.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher hinted at a victory for the county Thursday afternoon.“Yesterday we were below the state guidance, today we’re below the state guidance,” said Fletcher. “Tomorrow if we’re below the state guidance that will remove us from the state monitoring list.”RELATED: San Diego County case rate under watch list threshold for second straight dayThose metrics are based on having fewer than 100 cases per 100,000 residents over two weeks. If we can stay off the watch list for 14 days in a row after being removed from the state's list, students will be allowed back on school campuses.But, that doesn’t mean it will happen right away.“All of us have been watching those numbers,” said Theresa Kemper, Superintendent at Grossmont Union High School District. “When it finally went under 100, there’s a celebration because we look forward to getting kids back.”RELATED: Private school in Spring Valley to reopen with in-person learningKemper says they plan to give parents and teachers a two-week notice before they would return in-person.“Classrooms are already ready to go, but it’s all the other services we provide,” said Kemper. “Are the buses ready to go? Food service?”For Cajon Valley Union Schools, the district says they successfully welcomed 6,000 students to 27 of their campuses for summer programs. Social distancing and mask requirements were in place. They tell us over the six-week period they did not have a single case of COVID-19.Superintendent David Miyashiro says even if the county can welcome students back, they would still need time to prepare.“To say we’d be able to open right away, I don’t feel comfortable with that,” said Miyashiro. “The short answer is as soon as possible starting with our most vulnerable students.”San Diego Unified says they’re using their own criteria that goes beyond the state standards. It calls for rigorous contact tracing before they’ll reopen in-person.Escondido Union High School District starts a fully virtual school year on Aug. 25. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 17-year-old boy with several health problems.According to police, Jeremy Jose Sanchez was last seen by his mother at their apartment on Aug. 23 at around 9 p.m. Police did not disclose what part of the city the boy was last seen.The teen suffers from vision damage, loss of hearing, and has active tuberculosis. Police said he takes medications for his conditions, but he left his home without them.Police said Jeremy was reported as a runaway juvenile at risk due to health conditions.The teen is Latino with a tanned complexion, 6 feet 1 inches tall, weighs around 146 pounds, and has brown eyes and black hair.Jeremy was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt, blue jeans, and white, red and black Jordan shoes.Anyone with information on the teen is urged to contact San Diego police at 619-531-2000 or 911. 902

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ricardo Silva, a Chula Vista native, has it in his blood to both serve his country and join the medical field.He had multiple family members join the military and as a San Diego local, he grew up around the Navy, so he became a sailor about ten years ago. Growing up with a mother who was a nurse, it makes sense that he and his sister followed her lead. His sister now works for the Public Health Department and he’s working at Naval Hospital Bremerton in Washington with the preventative medicine team as a contact tracer for COVID-19 patients.He and his team have worked days as long as 18 hours since the start of the pandemic, figuring out where patients contracted the virus.“It’s very very detailed, trying to figure out where they got it and how to try to prevent that from happening for the next person,” he said.Naval Hospital Bremerton has screened more than 35,000 patients as of July 30.“As I do this work, as tough as it is, when this is all over I just want to be able to say I did my part to help get through this,” he said. 1067
