The website of the National Bureau of Corruption Prevention (NBCP) crashed on Tuesday, just hours after its launch, as droves of people logged on to complain about corruption among officials.The website (yfj.mos.gov.cn) was closed for most of the afternoon, Beijing Youth Daily reported.An NBCP official, who did not want to be named, confirmed the breakdown had occurred."Repairs were carried out soon after the website broke down and normal service has now been resumed, he told the Xinhua News Agency."The number of visitors was very large and beyond our expectations," he said.As of 4 pm yesterday, visitors had left 22 pages of messages in the website's guest book.While many of them referred to report specific cases of official corruption, these were redirected by the webmaster to other sites, such as that of the Ministry of Supervision.Other visitors made calls for the strengthening of the government's anti-corruption efforts, and comments about the need for special attention to be given to cases involving institutes of higher education and grassroots governments."The corruption problem in China is a fatal illness. Establishing more institutions will not solve the problem," one comment read.The enthusiasm that greeted the launch of the website reflects the growing frustration felt by the public toward corruption at government level, which has been accentuated by several high-profile cases in recent years.Several senior officials, including Qiu Xiaohua, the former director of the National Bureau of Statistics; Zheng Xiaoyu, the former head of the food and drug administration; and Chen Liangyu, the former Party head of Shanghai, have been found guilty of serious corruption.Last year, more than 90,000 officials were disciplined, according to official figures.The NBCP was set up on September 13, with Ma Wen, the Minister of Supervision, as its head.The bureau has been entrusted to collect and analyze information from the banking, land use, medicine and telecommunications sectors, among others, and to share it with prosecuting organs, courts and the police.It is not, however, involved in the investigation of individual cases.

BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhua) -- China's upcoming growth enterprise board for small start-ups to raise funds is no threat to the main stock market, Yao Gang, new vice chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), said here Tuesday.     His comments followed continuous declines in China's bourses partly caused by fears of capital shortages after a series of restraining measures and huge refinancing.     "The market is not short of money but of better and more attractive investment products," said Yao in an online interview.     CSRC statistics showed the average market capitalization of the222 companies listed on the Shenzhen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) board was only 300 million yuan.     The number would be even lower, ranging from 100 million to 200million yuan, on the growth enterprise board, he said.     Therefore the capitalization of listing 100 such enterprises would only match one major enterprise on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, he said.     The CSRC began to solicit opinions on the growth enterprise board on March 21. Shang Fulin, CSRC chairman, said in January the board would be opened on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in the first half of 2008.     Lack of finance has been a problem for China's 42 million small and medium-sized enterprises, more than 95 percent of which are privately owned.     Less than 2 percent of the SMEs access funds directly from the financial market, according to statistics from the National Development and Reform Commission.

The men were reportedly detained by local police in December 2005 but were released on bail nine months later.The five were arrested again last month, after Li visited the site of the accident and learnt of the case's progress.A notorious and unauthorized coal mine in Chenzhou, Hunan Province, has been making the headlines for its harsh treatment of workers and attempts to cover up accidents. But the mine's chief, Huang Shengfu, reportedly managed to stay in the clear and bought himself out of any legal liability, reported the Oriental Outlook magazine.Eight respective probes into the mine by the central and provincial disciplinary committees as of last month all returned no clear results, the document stated.SAWS said on Sunday that there were about 457,000 workplace accidents reported from January to November this year, representing a decrease of 22.4 percent year-on-year. The number of accident deaths also dropped to 88,923, a year-on-year decrease of 14 percent.During the past 11 months, a total of 83 serious accidents, each of which 10 or more people were killed, claimed a total of 1,380 lives, SAWS reported.
