Pedro Rios says the idea that immigrants are coming to this country solely to be a burden to the United States is absolutely false. Rios is the Executive Director of American Friends Service Committee – a national organization that has worked on immigration and border issues for 42 years. He says he is against a new rule that disqualifies immigrants from a green card if they use certain government benefits, because he says it's causing people to drop out of benefit services they do qualify for. “In this case, prenatal care is not a targeted benefit. However, someone might decide to stop receiving that care simply because they fear that it would place them at the crosshairs of some sort of immigration enforcement operation,” Rios said. Dulce Garcia, an immigration attorney and DACA recipient, agrees with Rios. She says the rule has a two-fold impact: it denies more people the ability to qualify as a legal permanent resident, and now people are afraid of accessing other public benefits. She knows from personal experience when her family had to live inside a car and with very little food. “We’re going to see more people like my parents who were afraid of accessing public benefits and decided to risk our health essentially by remaining unsheltered and by struggling with food,” Garcia said. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a food program that's among those included in the rule. If immigrants collect those benefits more than 12 months in three years, they can't get a green card - and become a permanent resident. “We all fall on hard times. My family fell on hard times, and I wish that we would have had people telling us ‘it’s OK, it’s OK to receive help’ so that we would be safe.” As the executive director of Border Angels, a nonprofit that advocates for the immigrant community, Garcia says she tries to empower immigrants with accurate information so they know what benefits they’re still eligible for. However, there are people in favor of the rule, like Agnes Gibboney, who was born in Hungary. Her family entered the U.S. in 1970. “When we immigrated to the U.S., my parents had to sign a document stating they would not apply for any public assistance. That my father could support my mother, my brother and myself,” Gibboney said. Gibboney says she doesn't like the idea of immigrants using taxpayer dollars for services. “The importance of being fully vetted is for the government to know who is coming into this country. To make sure you are of good moral standing, to make sure you’re going to be a good citizen, and make sure that you’re gonna be a plus to this country,” Gibboney said. When it announced the new rule, the Department of Homeland Security called self-sufficiency a core American value. On the other hand, Rios says public benefits might be necessary in order for some immigrants to eventually become self-sufficient.“What we’ve seen in the past is when their needs aren’t being met, then it’s harder for them to support themselves in other ways,” Rios said. 3052
Cheese Importers is a business that will directly feel the impacts of the cheese tariffs recently imposed on the European Union. “We started in 1976 out of our family home with six packs of cheeses from Wisconsin,” Cheese Importers Co-Owner Clara White said. From olives and pastries to European home goods, its main attraction is in the name. Cheese Importers offers a selection of 350 imported cheeses – most of them are from Europe. “Countries like Italy, Portugal, Spain, France,” said Sascha Stanger, the Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Purchasing at Cheese Importers. It’s a popular spot for cheese lovers. However, prices are about to go up as cheeses of all types and flavors because the European Union has just been hit with an import tariff. "Really, it is impacting people negatively,” White said. White and Stanger say certain cheese prices are subject to a potential 25% increase. “[Cheeses like] Parmesan-Reggiano from Italy, Grana Padano from Italy, Buffalo Mozzarella from Italy,” Stanger said. “One of the items that will definitely be subject to change is Manchego from Spain.” The team says they haven’t felt a huge impact yet, but they’re anticipating a potential hit to their bottom-line. Therefore, they’re looking for alternative solutions to save money. “We buy directly from our sources in importing, but in the meantime – just to figure out how to put ourselves in a position of strength as what everyone is doing – we’d reach out to all of our importer partners across the united states and see what they would sell to us at the better price point,” White said. Truth is, European cheese is what the business is known for. Inevitably, customers will have to pay more. “You either have to pass it on, or you have to absorb it. And there’s not much room to absorb it. In fact, there’s no room to absorb it,” White said. Distinguished economics professor Dr. Kishore Kulkarni with MSU Denver says there are multiple reasons the current administration could be imposing tariffs on goods from Europe. It's a way for the U.S. to generate more tax revenue. Tariffs are also a way to punish foreign exporters if the government believes a certain country is not playing on a level field. In the context of cheese, Dr. Kulkarni says it's likely the federal government is hoping the tariffs will help U.S. cheese producers earn more money. “As we raise the taxes on the European imports, then the domestic cheese producers like it, because the price of imported cheese goes up, and then the domestic cheese producers can obviously raise their prices a little bit, and then their competition is stopped by this tax,” Dr. Kulkarni said. However, in his opinion, tariffs are never beneficial for the economy as a whole. “40 years of economics training has been telling me that the penalty that consumers pay, is much higher than the benefits that domestic producers get,” Dr. Kulkarni said. When one country imposes a tariff, the other country is likely to retaliate. “Then it just becomes a trade war, and this is a war where nobody wins,” Dr. Kulkarni said. It's a war where the consumer is punished too. “The fact is that the cost of a tariff gets passed along to consumers,” Cheese Importers customer Steve Pittman said. Ultimately, Cheese Importers hopes the tariffs will be lifted. However, in the coming months, they plan to continue in good spirits providing their customers with the specialty cheeses they’ve grown to love.“We do the very best we can with a lot of integrity and a lot of heart and soul and tighten our belts where we can and just try to be a good contributor in the world,” White said. 3652

Classes on social movements tend to focus on the past. But this Black Lives Matter class at the University of Colorado in Boulder focuses on what's happening right now. “So, the whole point is to connect what we're studying in the class to what's happening right now in the real world in real time,” says Professor Dr. Reiland Rabaka. Dr. Rabaka spent 18 months preparing for this class, touching on everything from police brutality and racial profiling to immigration and mental health. “People are documenting it as it evolves as it goes along, and that's really incredible,” the professor says. “And the students are very much a part of a lot of these struggles on the ground.” In March, just miles away from campus, a police officer pulled a gun on a black student picking up trash in his yard. The incident made national news, as well as class curriculum. “I did go to the march for that with like a hundred other people, and then the next day, I had class and talked about it,” says junior Makena Lambert. Lambert says she's been waiting for a class like this since the Black Lives Matter movement started. “No one was teaching me about it in high school, and I remember trying to get people to talk about it at my high school and it really remained unacknowledged,” Lambert says. Several universities nationwide have similar classes. There's even a Black Lives Matter Week of Action at elementary, middle and high schools around the country. For PhD student Jenean McGee, she says the class gives students the tools to become leaders and activists themselves.“It's a political statement. Studies show the greatest risk for a data breach is employee negligence. “Somewhere between 85 and 95 percent of successful attacks on organizations now stem from phishing,” cybersecurity expert Ross Jordan said. Ross Jordan with High Touch Technologies says phishing is a way for foreign groups or companies to gain private information from a company by targeting the employee usually through email. Scammers have become advanced enough to appear as a person or organization you trust asking for your password or credit card number. “Phishing is something that’s usually sent out by bots. Literally just blasted out to hundreds if not thousands of emails at a time. And they’re hoping for that one na?ve person to follow the link, and when they do, you’re literally opening the doors to the kingdom,” Jordan said. Employees are often tricked because the email contains a reactionary ask telling somebody they need to share personal information right away. “They’re taking advantage of our human nature. And when somebody needs your help, and somebody needs an action from you, you want to respond, you want to do something,” Jordan said. According to Jordan, the best way to prevent these attacks is to train your employees. Commercial General Contractor, Pinkard Construction, is one company leading by example. Technology Manager Eric Schmeer says models that used to be on paper have now become fully digitized using laser scanners, drones and 360 degree cameras. “All of these devices, all this information, it’s all computerized, it’s all digital, it’s all connected to the internet. And so when you’re running these multi-million dollar projects and all that information is digital, it’s really, really important to protect it,” Schmeer said. For that reason, Pinkard Construction takes time to educate its employees on what an attack could look like. “Teach people just the fundamentals about how to analyze an email, and determine whether it looks phishy or not. And what to do when they’re not sure about links and whether they should click them, and how to figure out where they go,” Schmeer said. The company also fosters an environment where employees are encouraged to come forward with questions. “Nobody is ever hesitant to forward an entire technology team here and say ‘Hey is this legitimate? Can I click this link? What’s gonna happen here?’” Knowing you could be just one click away from killing your company, it’s always OK to ask for help. “Just ask. It’s very simple.
