SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two fires sparked Saturday afternoon in East County, in addition to a thunderstorm in Pine Valley, created dicey conditions for firefighters.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said the humidity made a huge difference, "the monsoonal moisture the stickiness has been good because it's helped keep our fires small," slowing the spread of flames.The Bratton Fire sparked in Lawson Valley around 1:30 p.m. and scorched 4 acres. Then around 2:10 p.m., the Sloane Fire started burning in Dehesa, blackening 18 acres.Both were knocked down quickly."We hope that people don't get complacent that we've hit these fires very aggressively and it's worked out," Shoots said.He said if we didn't have the humidity we would be in trouble, "there's a lot of fuel that comes with a good winter so that grass crop is all cured out and ready to burn."Shoots said they were keeping their eye on the thunderstorm in Pine Valley.The National Weather Service reported a severe thunderstorm warning with quarter-sized hail and gusts up to 60 miles per hour."We knew it wasn't going to be to the extent that the north saw when the storms rolled through but it was still definitely a potential concern," Shoots said.Looking forward, Shoots says we need to be very careful, "San Diego and a good chunk of California is sitting at a higher potential for wildfire activity in October-November."He advises creating defensible space around your home not only to protect your home but protect your family if you can't escape in time.Shoots said he hopes firefighters are able to get a handle on the fires in Northern California and stay safe.He said 96% of all Cal Fire engines are working, which shows how extreme this fire season is.More than half of Cal Fire San Diego's resources have been sent up north to help, including 32 engines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say officers made their second-largest meth bust along the southern border in history last week.On Oct. 9, officers stopped a driver at about 9:45 a.m. at the Otay Mesa commercial facility who was crossing with a tractor-trailer shipment manifested as medical supplies. The truck was referred to further inspection, where the truck was screened using an imaging system and canine officers.Officers detected irregularities in the rear of the trailer and say they found 1,816 packages comingled with medical supplies of spray bottles and pipette tools. CBP said those packages contained about 3,014 pounds of methamphetamine, 64 pounds of heroin, 29 pounds of fentanyl powder, and almost 37 pounds of fentanyl pills, worth an estimated .2 million.The meth seized in the vehicle stop is the second-largest meth bust in agency history, according to CBP."This massive seizure is testament of what law enforcement agencies can do when we combine forces – prevent over million worth of deadly drugs from entering our country; thus saving countless lives from addiction and overdose deaths," said DEA Special Agent in Charge John Callery. "DEA cherishes our great law enforcement partners in San Diego, especially those who work tirelessly to protect our nation’s borders. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside.They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized.The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check.In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier.It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857
