SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police saved a driver whose SUV got stuck in the path of an oncoming train in Little Italy Tuesday morning.The vehicle was stuck on the track at 1:30 a.m. near West Grape Street and California Street, approximately 100 yards south of the railroad crossing.Police were on the scene and helped the driver out of the SUV, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies who assisted in the investigation.A southbound Amtrak train was traveling 35 miles an hour when the train operator saw the vehicle on the track.The operator applied the emergency brake but was unable to stop in time, and collided with the vehicle.The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Neither the driver nor any passenger on the train was hurt. 771

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers approved funding to hire an additional 230 employees for California DMVs. The decision comes on the same day they shut down a proposal to audit long wait times at offices throughout the state. DMV officials say they've seen a surge in demand at offices from people getting the new REAL ID License, which you can't do by mail or online. State Assemblymember Phil Ting is spearheading an effort to shorten the wait. He says wait times at some offices were up to seven hours. "We've identified some technological fixes so that people can enter the information," said Ting. "There would be less clerical work."In July, lawmakers added an extra million to the DMV budget. The extra funding would allow them to hire 500 more employees, offer Saturday services and upgrades to some self-service kiosks. Assemblymember Ting got onboard when he had to go to the DMV in San Francisco and saw the line wrapped around the block. "It looked like people were waiting in line for a rock concert," said Ting. "Not for their driver's license."He says another problem was that people were waiting too long to renew.  "People couldn't get appointments before their licenses were expiring," said Ting. "We're asking to send those notices out much further in advance."DMV officials are also rolling out new programs like text message notifications and expanding self-service terminals to 50 grocery stores later this year. Drivers who want to get a REAL ID would still have to go into an office. DMV officials say you can expect to see reduced wait times by the middle of September, but they don't expect what they call "reasonable" wait times until December. Before the vote, the ordinance only addressed underage drinking, but not drugs. The amendment, which was approved unanimously, will now go before the council for a second reading before it becomes law. “As a mom, the safety of my children is my priority, and as City Attorney, I am committed to protecting every child,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a man who was trying to sell basketball tickets Friday robbed a victim near San Diego State University as the NCAA basketball tournament was underway.The robbery happened about 11 a.m. in the east alley of 5100 College Ave., police said. The location is behind the ARCO gas station at the corner of Montezuma Rd.Officers said the suspect stole the victim’s money and may have been carrying a small knife. The victim was not hurt.The suspect ran toward the Aztec Student Union and was last seen near Campanile Drive.Police said the suspect is a black man in his late teens, about six-feet tall and 120 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santa Ana winds and low humidity will bring fire danger to San Diego County this week.Relative humidity is down to 10% to 15% in the county, according to the National Weather Service San Diego, causing localized fire weather conditions through Tuesday ahead of moderate to strong Santa Ana winds peaking on Thursday.The high wind weather is expected to last Wednesday night into Friday, the NWS said. Winds will gradually weaken next weekend, but dry air will remain in the county."It is already starting out dry preceding this next event which is not good," the NWS wrote. "Relative humidity will plummet further and by Thursday, single-digit and teen relative humidity could drive all the way to the coast."The county can expect to see temperatures steadily rise 5 to 10 degrees above normal west of the mountains and about 3 to 6 degrees above normal elsewhere into Tuesday, NWS says.Despite this, cooler temperatures will work their way into the county overnight."Nights will remain cool, especially for the wind-sheltered areas.
