CARTAGENA, Colombia, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Sunday held talks with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe in the northern Colombian port city of Cartagena.     Xi first transferred the sincere regards of Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao to Uribe, and expressed his thanks to Uribe for specially coming here to meet the Chinese delegation. Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping meets with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe in Cartagena, a port city of Colombia, on Feb. 15, 2009These moves reflected the deep friendship between the two peoples, said Xi, who arrived in Colombia Saturday for a three-day visit.     He said bilateral relations have made great headway in recent years under the care of the two countries' leaders.     In November, President Hu reached consensus with Uribe on deepening bilateral sincere and friendly political ties, strengthening mutually beneficial, win-win and practical cooperation, increasing civil exchanges, and boosting multilateral coordination and cooperation, Xi said.     The consensus is the principle and direction for the development of bilateral ties in the following period of time, he added.     Xi said next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, and bilateral ties will enter a mature period that enjoys full-scale development.     He said both sides should seize this opportunity to fully implement the consensus reached by the two countries' leaders and focus on the work in the following four fields:     -- to increase mutual trust in political affairs, deepen their sincere friendship, and care each other's concerns;     -- to make use of the advantage of mutual complementarity, expand bilateral trade, and promote trade balance;     -- to broaden cooperation fields, actively explore new fields and ways for mutually beneficial cooperation, and meet the new demands of common development;     -- to encourage investment and cooperation in various forms and promote the level of bilateral practical cooperation, with the Chinese government encouraging and supporting Chinese companies to carry out trade, economic and investment activities in Colombia.     For his part, Uribe asked Xi to convey the Colombian people's greetings to President Hu and the Chinese people.     Colombia attaches great importance to its relations with China and has always cherished friendly feelings for China, he said, adding that the Colombian government and people have very much looked forward to Xi's visit and are satisfied with the growth of bilateral relations in recent years.     Uribe recalled last year's signing of the bilateral investment protection agreement which he and President Hu had witnessed, saying it is a notable sign of the development of cooperation between Colombia and China.     Uribe expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its assistance to Colombia and voiced appreciation for China's accession into the Inter-American Development Bank, which he believes will help strengthen Colombia-China relations.     Chinese enterprises are warmly welcomed to invest in and trade with Colombia, which has rich natural resources and a steadily-growing economy, he said.     Noting that Colombia is impressed by the efforts China made to cope with the global financial crisis and stimulate economic growth, Uribe expressed his belief that China is an engine of the world economy and its development and growth pace are key to a quick recovery of the world economy from the financial crisis.     Colombia stands ready to broaden its cooperation with China and push their relationship to new heights, he said.     Colombia is the third leg of Xi's six-nation tour. He has already visited Mexico and Jamaica and will also visit Venezuela, Brazil and Malta.

BOAO, Hainan, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2009 concluded Sunday in the scenic Boao town in south China's island province of Hainan.     During the three-day event, more than 1,600 political leaders, business people and academic scholars exchanged ideas on the role Asian countries, especially emerging economies, can play to cope with the spreading global financial crisis.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao delivered a keynote speech, "Strengthen confidence and deepen cooperation for win-win progress", at the opening plenary meeting.     He said that the conference, with "Asia: Managing Beyond Crisis" as its theme, is a highly important one. It will contribute to the efforts to build consensus, strengthen confidence, deepen cooperation and overcome the crisis.     Wen introduced the steps China has taken to cope with the severe impact of the global financial crisis, saying the country's package plan is already "paying off", and positive changes have taken place in the economy.     China has decided to set up a 10-billion-U.S.-dollar "China-ASEAN Fund on Investment Cooperation" to support infrastructure development in the region, Wen announced.     The BFA annual conference was the eighth of its kind.     BFA was established in 2001 as a platform for high-level interaction between political and business leaders from Asia and around the world. It is aimed at promoting the development goals of Asian countries through greater regional economic integration.

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan should strengthen cooperation to deal with the financial crisis, said Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Friday.     "China is willing to work with Japan to properly handle sensitive issues in bilateral relations and consolidate our political foundations," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.     In a meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu, Wu said China-Japan relations were improving and cooperation in various fields have expanded. BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Overseas Chinese say they are pleased with the economic stimulus measures discussed at China's two top political conferences and think the proposals will provide a good road map for the future.     The two conferences, known as the "two sessions," are the Second Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), which was to end Friday, and the Second Session of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which closed Thursday.     Speaking of Premier Wen Jiabao's work report to the NPC, overseas Chinese in the Czech Republic said they are confident for the future development of their homeland.     Ni Jian, chairman of the Czech Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China, together with others, said they were pleased as Wen said in his speech that China "must not slacken efforts" to promote its exports amid a sharp decline in external demand.     Wen said "We will continue to diversify our export markets and compete on quality, enhance traditional export markets, and energetically open up new markets," adding the government is to take a series of measures to relieve the difficulties of exporters.     Ni said the proposed measures lighten the way for Chinese business people abroad.     Hu Zhiheng, a Wenzhou businessman in Italy, said he was most impressed by Wen's remarks that the government will make efforts to "ensure steady growth in foreign trade."     As a matter of fact, China had already adopted a series of measures before the two sessions that included such things as raising export rebates, loosening credit, and abolishing or cutting customs tariffs, he said.     The overseas Chinese were mostly concerned with the economic policies released at the two sessions and how the government will be responding to the global financial crisis in order to maintain stable development, Luo Yuhong, chief editor of Capital News in Belgium, told Xinhua.     Lu Chengrui, head of the U.S. Shandong Association, said he holds high expectations for the two conferences, and hopes all of the plans can be implemented.     Zhan Aixia, head of the New York Beijing Association, said after reading the government work report that she expects her country to develop a stronger economy and intensify cultural exchanges with the United States.     In addition, Chinese students in Japan, Belgium and Italy also kept a close eye on China's development.     In Belgium, student Chen Fang said she was especially interested in issues concerning employment as she planned a career in China after graduation.     Wu Changbo and Chen Yao in Italy described Wen's work report as China's commitment to the world amid the economic crisis.     In the face of great challenges and difficulties, China still pledged an 8 percent economic growth, which they said has showcased the confidence of the country.     Wen's statement that put a priority on the employment of college students and the advancing of education were inspiring, they said, adding that they wish they could use the knowledge they have acquired abroad to serve the motherland after graduation.     Li Guangzhe, chief of the Chinese students' association in Japan, told Xinhua that the group cares most China's ongoing process of building a harmonious society and the role it plays in the world platform.     Li said he found the answers to those questions in the premier's work report.     The confidence delivered in Wen's report will give impetus to the development of the whole world and demonstrates that China is a responsible global power, he added.

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- House prices in 70 major Chinese cities fell 1.3 percent in March from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said Monday.     The month-on-month figure, however, rose 0.2 percent in March.     In the first quarter, the area of commercial houses sold rose 8.2 percent to 113 million square meters and sales jumped 23.1 percent to 505.9 billion yuan (74 billion U.S. dollars), the NBS said.     Prices of new houses fell 1.9 percent year-on-year last month but rose 0.1 percent from February. Prices for second-hand houses rose 0.3 percent month-on-month despite of a decline of 0.4 percent from a year earlier.     Analysts warned it was still too early to say the property market had revived, as sales were mainly driven by surging credit and by stimulus policies, such as tax cuts. Other indicators, such as land purchases by developers, had shown no signs of recovery.     Floor areas of newly built houses in the first quarter tumbled 16.2 percent to 201 million sq m. The decline was 1.4 percentage points more than the January-February figure.     Land purchased for homebuilding fell more than 40 percent in the first quarter to 47.42 million sq m, and the actual area developed shrank 11.3 percent to 52.2 million sq m.     China Vanke, the country's biggest property developer by market value, reported on April 11 its first-quarter sales rose 21 percent to 12.22 billion yuan. Those of Poly Real Estate Group, the second-biggest, doubled to 6.48 billion yuan.
