SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man shot in an officer-involved shooting downtown last weekend has died from his injuries.Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra, 25, died of his injuries at the hospital on Monday just before 10:30 p.m., SDPD said Tuesday.On Saturday, two officers in the area of 1200 6th Avenue saw Ibarra leaving a building and recognized him from a recent wanted flier regarding a robbery, according to SDPD. He drew an object and pointed it at an officer, prompting both officers to fire their service weapons, police added."He produced a handgun and then pointed it at the officers," said SDPD Capt. Rich Freedman over the weekend. "For fear that they were going to be shot, the officers return fire."Ibarra was hit at least once. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.A loaded revolver wrapped in a bandana was recovered at the scene, but police have not determined if Ibarra fired the weapon at officers.The two officers involved, identified as Jonathon Lucas and Tevar Zaki, were not injured. Both officers have been with SDPD for about four years, according to the department. Footage from a smart street light overhead and a nearby security camera were also released to the public.After SDPD's homicide unit completes its investigation, the case will be reviewed by the county District Attorney's Office to determine if the officers are subject to any criminal liability, according to police.If any policy violations are discovered, the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation.SDPD says the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will also review the incident and give any recommendations.The Federal Bureau of Investigations and U.S. Attorney's Office will monitor the investigations, police added.San Diego Police could not comment further while the investigation is ongoing. 2507

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Monday, CVS Pharmacy will begin giving COVID-19 vaccines to staff and residents at California's long term care facilities. On Dec. 18, the first shot was given by a CVS employee at a nursing home in Connecticut."We'll be putting 9,000 vaccinators on the road to give those vaccines across the country," Jonathan Roberts, Vice President of CVS Health, said then.Ten days later, CVS pharmacy will begin its 12-week vaccination program at California's skilled nursing facilities and assisted living centers. The company expects to give the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to around 700,000 people at 15,000 facilities across the state."Retail pharmacies are the foundation of the approach here, both because we are convenient and we're everywhere," Dr. Troy Brennan, Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health, said.Earlier this month, the federal government awarded Walgreens and CVS contracts to roll out the vaccines because of already existing infrastructure and staff. CVS vaccinators will visit each facility at least three times for boosters and check-ups within the 12-week rotation.After this initial phase, CVS executives say they will move onto the next tier of priority recipients, which includes essential workers, older Americans, and those with chronic illnesses."We have the best chance of being able to reach the public, and the public likes that approach," Dr. Brennan said.Both pharmacies already use their websites and apps, where people can make COVID testing appointments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sick and tired over school shootings, a Point Loma High School junior is trying to make change through one of his passions.He participated in Public Service Announcement contest, a collaboration between San Diego Crime Stoppers and the San Diego Unified School District Police Department. Students were required to create a PSA about an issue schools deal with, like bullying or substance abuse.Tim Fraher's 40-second PSA addressed school shootings, raising awareness about the ways it's easier to get a gun than a driver's license. He also wants people to take notice if a friend or classmate is getting bullied or seems depressed.Fraher says he wants people to take school shootings seriously."We need to do something. We can't just sit around and pray that it will go away because it won't. We need to actually get out there and actively reform and make changes so that this won't happen," said Fraher.Fraher won the competition, and his PSA will air on television in the San Diego region this June. "It felt good to know that the message will get across, that it will be out there," said Fraher.He hopes the 40-second message will encourage others to take a chance at making a change. 1216
