WELLINGTON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- One in every eight women giving birth in a New Zealand hospital last year was Asian, local media reported Sunday. In the country's most populous city, Auckland, 5,149 Asian women gave birth, more than double the number of 15 years ago, the New Zealand Herald reported.Last year was the first year in the city when more Asian women gave birth than indigenous Maori women, who registered 5,015 births.Citing figures from the government statistics agency, Statistics New Zealand, the report said the majority of women nationwide who gave birth last year were still of European descent, accounting for 43,965 of last year's 63,897 births. But more women of other ethnic backgrounds were also becoming mothers, including those from the Middle East, Latin America and Africa.Auckland University head of obstetrics and gynaecology, Professor Lesley McCowan, said the increase reflected New Zealand is an increasingly multicultural society.

BAODING, Hebei, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday called for efforts to promote welfare for senior citizens and vowed to improve the country's health care system to make medical services more affordable.Hu made the call during a three-day inspection tour in Baoding City of northern province of Hebei starting on Tuesday, during which he visited orphans, talked to senior citizens and extended festival greetings to local residents. At a nursing center in Shunping County of Baoding City, Hu offered New Year greetings to senior citizens, orphans and staff of the center.Hu wished the senior citizens good health and a long life, encouraged orphans to study hard, and thanked the staff for the care given to the aged. The Communist Party of China (CPC) and the government will make strenuous efforts to improve the welfare of seniors and make sure their difficulties are solved and they have access to better services, Hu said. When visiting Zhao Helou, a Baoding retiree who has been hospitalized several times and living in difficult circumstances, Hu promised assistance from the Party and the government to help Zhao tide over her problems. The health care and medical insurance system would be improved in the future to tackle people's difficulties in medical care, Hu promised.During his visit to Baoding, Hu also inspected drought conditions at wheat fields, joined villagers during New Year celebrations and extended Spring Festival greetings to passengers, station workers and volunteers.Hu, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, was briefed on the work of Hebei's provincial committee of the CPC and the provincial government during his tour.

WASHINGTON, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Researchers at the University of Colorado (CU) and the Harvard University have found that people living at higher altitudes have a lower chance of dying from ischemic heart disease and tend to live longer than others, according to a study published this week in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. They spent four years analyzing death certificates from every county in the United States. They examined cause-of-death, socio- economic factors and other issues in their research. They found that of the top 20 counties with the highest life expectancy, eleven for men and five for women were located in Colorado and Utah. And each county was at a mean elevation of 5, 967 feet above sea level. The men lived between 75.8 and 78.2 years, while women ranged from 80.5 to 82.5 years.Compared to those living near sea-level, the men lived 1.2 to 3. 6 years longer and women 0.5 to 2.5 years more."If living in a lower oxygen environment such as in our Colorado mountains helps reduce the risk of dying from heart disease it could help us develop new clinical treatments for those conditions," said Benjamin Honigman, professor of Emergency Medicine at the CU School of Medicine. "Lower oxygen levels turn on certain genes and we think those genes may change the way heart muscles function. They may also produce new blood vessels that create new highways for blood flow into the heart."Another explanation, he said, could be that increased solar radiation at altitude helps the body better synthesize vitamin D which has also been shown to have beneficial effects on the heart and some kinds of cancer.Despite these numbers, the study showed that when socio- economic factors, solar radiation, smoking and pulmonary disease were taken into account, the net effect of altitude on overall life expectancy was negligible.Still, Honigman said, altitude seems to offer protection against heart disease deaths and may also play a role in cancer development.Colorado, the highest state in the nation, is also the leanest state, the fittest state, has the fewest deaths from heart disease and a lower incidence of colon and lung cancer compared to others.

BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Mozilla's newly launched Firefox 4 Web browser was downloaded nearly 7 million times worldwide in the first 24 hours, according to media reports. The number was almost triple the 2.4 million downloads that Microsoft reported in the first 24 hours after the Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) was released.Nevertheless, the number lagged behind the record-breaking performance of Firefox 3, which was downloaded more than 8 million times in the first day after launch in mid-2008.Statistics show that Firefox 4 has attracted interest from around the world, with 44 percent downloads in Europe, 26 percent in North America. and 20 percent in Asia.Mozilla launched Firefox 4 on Tuesday at around 10:00 a.m. EDT to compete with Microsoft's IE9 and Google Chrome. The new Web browser was originally scheduled to ship last November, but bugs delayed the release into early this year.Firefox trumped IE9 in the first day download contest because it runs on Windows XP, the 10-year-old operating system that IE9 doesn't support.
