A Detroit nonprofit says it was denied service because of the city it's located in.Franklin Wright Settlement has been in business for more than 134 years on the east side of Detroit, and says a bounce house company would not deliver to the city because of safety issues.Deon Mullen, director of the Franklin Wright Settlement, said he tried to rent a bounce house for an annual event for kids, but says Awesome Bounce in Canton told him no."I was quite surprised," he said.Awesome Bounce sent Mullen an email saying the company does not service Detroit because of employees being robbed and equipment being stolen and damaged in the past. Mullen said he was offended by the email and said not all of Detroit is dangerous. He said he feels the owner's decision is bad business.Mullen said he is most upset at a certain part of the owner's response, where he states he feels sorry for the deserving children who were born into one place and not another. He also doesn't feel that the issue of safety is a valid excuse."It can happen anywhere," Mullen said. A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to fully restore the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program Friday and accept new applicants for the first time since 2017, according to media reports.A judge with the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn told the Department of Homeland Security to post a public notice by Monday that states they will accept DACA petitions from immigrants who qualify and are not currently enrolled.The judge also instructed DHS officials to grant approved applicants work permits that last two years, and not the one year limit the Trump administration had proposed, according to CBS News."DHS is DIRECTED to post a public notice, within 3 calendar days of this Order, to be displayed prominently on its website and on the websites of all other relevant agencies, that it is accepting first-time requests for consideration of deferred action under DACA, renewal requests, and advance parole requests, based on the terms of the DACA program prior to September 5, 2017, and in accordance with this court's Memorandum & Order of November 14, 2020," the judge wrote.The Trump administration tried to end DACA in 2017, but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against him in June 2020. Wolf issued a memo in July saying that new applications for DACA would not be accepted and renewals would be limited to one year. The memo essentially suspended the program.Friday’s order follows a ruling in November from the same judge that found acting DHS secretary Chad Wolf did not have the legal authority to close DACA to new applicants, shorten the period for work permits or change protections from deportations.The judge ruled at the time Wolf’s appointment to his position violated the Homeland Security Act of 2002. A congressional delegation will visit the Customs and Border Protection (CPB) station in New Mexico on Tuesday where a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl was taken before she died in a hospital, a congressional aide says.Jakelin Caal Maquin and her father were among a group of 163 migrants detained by Border Patrol agents the night of December 6 in a remote area of the New Mexico desert, according to CPB. She became sick as they were being taken from the Antelope Wells port of entry in New Mexico to the station in Lordsburg, about 90 minutes away.Two days later, Jakelin was dead, officials said. She had vomited and stopped breathing while in Border Patrol custody and later went into cardiac arrest and suffered brain swelling at a Texas hospital.Eleven members of the House of Representatives, led by incoming Hispanic Caucus Chairman Rep. A little girl with a passion for writing letters is now becoming a published author.Emerson Weber went viral earlier this year when her dad tweeted her story.Emerson had about a dozen pen-pals at the time. She writes them letters filled with jokes and stories, and she always decorates the envelopes.“It's like a little piece of art that someone's going to find in their mailbox, and I get my inspiration from everywhere,” said Weber, author of “Sincerely, Emerson.”Weber wanted to thank her mail carrier for always taking all her letters, so she wrote him too. Her mail carrier then shared that letter with his supervisor at work, who shared it regionally, and the responses poured in. Two boxes full of letters from postal workers arrived.Some sent back stamps or asked her to send a letter to more people in their family.Many postal workers said they felt seen for the first time in a long time, and she wrote back to all of them.“In this time that's a little crazy, they're still out there doing their job, so we can stay connected to our pen pals and people we love,” said Weber.After her story spread online, even more people from all over started writing Weber.She hopes when people read her book, they realize how one act of kindness can spread.“And I also hope they take the time to write a letter because people really appreciate that,” she said. “Your grandparents, your friends, anyone would really love to get a letter from you and it's just so meaningful.”Her picture book based on the viral story, “Sincerely Emerson,” comes out next week. 1562
