For four days starting Monday, the Democrats will hold their national convention virtually after canceling their in-person convention slated for Milwaukee due to the coronavirus. The Democrats will attempt to keep a familiar format for its convention, with several keynote speakers scheduled to speak each night. The Republicans will also hold most of their convention activities virtually, starting for four nights on August 24.What’s differentThe conventions are generally a spectacle with thousands of party supporters gathered in a large arena amid pomp and circumstance. While conventions are a way for parties to energize their leaders for the stretch run of a campaign, the gathering of delegates allow for the party to develop its platform. While conventions officially serve the purpose of nominating a candidate for vice president and president, the nominations are generally a formality at the convention. With a virtual convention, the most visual component of the convention is gone. Will the addresses just be seen as more stump speeches? The event will also be pared down some. The speeches will run from 9 to 11 p.m. ET nightly. At previous conventions, festivities generally began in the late afternoon. With a shortened timeframe, a number of lower profile Democrats – think members of Congress without a national profile – won’t make it on the convention stage. What’s the sameThe format will still be a familiar one for those who follow conventions. A number of speeches will be given by top Democrats to promote Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and the party’s platform.Tuesday will also feature the official nomination for president and vice president. Wednesday will include the traditional vice presidential nominee acceptance speech, following by Thursday’s traditional presidential nominee acceptance speech.Like at a customary convention, the virtual Democratic Convention will have themes each night. Monday’s theme will be “We the People,” Tuesday’s theme will be “Leadership Matters,” Wednesday’s theme will be “A More Perfect Union,” and Thursday’s theme will be “America’s Promise.”The speakersThe Democratic Party has released a list of speakers for each night. Following his formal nomination to be the Republican nominee for the 2020 election, President Donald Trump called for "12 more years" in office.Following Monday's roll call vote, Trump took the stage at the RNC in Charlotte to chants of "four more years.""Now, if you really want to drive them crazy, say 12 more years," Trump said. The 22nd Amendment currently limits U.S. Presidents to serving only two terms in office.Trump cited his call for another 12 years in office by saying that Democrats were "caught doing some very bad things." He cited Democrats' push for expanded mail-in voting during the pandemic — which experts say would give neither party an advantage nor lead to widespread voter fraud.Later in his speech, Trump called the 2020 election "rigged." He also claimed that Democrats "spied" on his presidential campaign. Trump has made similar statements in the past, which PolitiFact has determined to be "false." 937

Former Donald Trump campaign official Rick Gates pleaded guilty Friday to two criminal charges in special counsel Robert Mueller's wide-ranging investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign and related activities.Gates is now the third Trump associate known to be working with Mueller's investigation, and his plea deal will put the spotlight on former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.Prosecutors are trying to pressure Manafort to speak with prosecutors about what he knows, particularly about the campaign.Gates was Manafort's right-hand man for a decade, was privy to most, if not all, of Manafort's activities during the campaign and stayed in the Trump orbit after Manafort's exit. Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.In Friday's hearing, Gates told a federal judge that he understood his potential sentence depended on his cooperation with prosecutors on the charges: conspiracy to commit to defraud the United States and making false statements.Gates, bearded and wearing a blue suit, tie and cuff links, listened to the judge read the offenses he is agreeing to plead guilty to and the possibility of being sentenced to up to 57 to 71 months in prison. He said "Yes, your honor" repeatedly as Judge Amy Berman Jackson read the court documents.Thursday, prosecutors described a "scheme" in which the two longtime business partners allegedly laundered million, failed to pay taxes for almost 10 years and used real estate they owned to fraudulently secure more than million in loans.Gates said that despite his "initial desire to vigorously defend myself," he has had a "change of heart" in order to protect his family, according to a letter sent to his family and friends, obtained by CNN from a Gates friend."The reality of how long this legal process will likely take, the cost, and the circus-like atmosphere of an anticipated trial are too much," Gates wrote. "I will better serve my family moving forward by exiting this process."He wrote that it was "difficult decision" to make, but that ensuring his family's "well-being is first and foremost.""The consequence is the public humiliation, which at this moment seems like a small price to pay for what our children would have to endure otherwise," he said.Last Friday, the special counsel produced grand jury indictments for 13 Russian nationals, accusing them of operating a misinformation campaign to hurt Hillary Clinton's presidential effort. In a statement, Manafort maintained his innocence."Notwithstanding that Rick Gates pled today, I continue to maintain my innocence. I had hoped and expected my business colleague would have had the strength to continue the battle to prove our innocence," Manafort said. "For reasons yet to surface he chose to do otherwise. This does not alter my commitment to defend myself against the untrue piled up charges contained in the indictments against me." Plea in motion for weeks 2958

First Lady Melania Trump announced Monday that the new tennis court pavilion at the White House is completed, just six weeks before President-elect Joe Biden is expected to be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.According to a White House press release, the project included renovating the existing tennis court and children's garden, as well as building the new pavilion, which was both "planned to blend with the existing structures on the White House grounds."The new building's design was inspired by the White House's existing architectural style, especially the East and West Wings, the first lady's office said."The colonnade, parapet wall, and fanlight windows tie the new building to the existing look and feel of the White House," the press release stated."I am pleased to announce the completion of the Tennis Pavilion on the White House grounds. Thank you to all of the talented craftsmen who made this project possible and to the generous supporters of the White House," said First Lady Melania Trump. "It is my hope that this private space will function as both a place of leisure and gathering for future First Families."Planning for the renovation began in early 2018. The Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission approved the project in June 2019. Construction began that October. The White House says the project was paid for with private donations and did not disclose the cost. 1449
