SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you're trying to find a precious ticket to San Diego Comic-Con this summer, watch out for villainous scammers scalping fake badges. The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning that third-party sellers may sell fake badges."For consecutive years now, Comic-Con International has sold out in record time and obtaining a badge has become strenuous," the BBB writes. "One of the most pervasive scams BBB has found over the years is the reselling scam in which a scammer claims they bought a badge but can no longer attend the convention."MAP: Where to find you favorite Comic-Con exhibitsScammers may offer their fake badge, tricking customers into thinking they can change the name on their badge to theirs. But they can't and Comic-Con doesn't allow legitimate badge holders to do so."A key factor for consumers to remember is Comic-Con provides a refund at the buyer’s request, making it unnecessary to resell a ticket," BBB adds. The BBB says another common scam with SDCC badges is scammers sell "extra tickets." Comic-Con badgeholders are limited to one ticket each, so third-party sellers can't have extra badges to sell. RELATED: San Diego Comic-Con 2019 road closures, detours, shuttle routes announcedMost importantly, SDCC badges are non-transferable. Those who purchase badges using their SDCC Member ID account agree not to sell, trade, transfer, or share badge information."...If San Diego Comic-Con determines you have violated this policy, they have the right to cancel your badge without a refund. Thus, buying from a third-party seller is not only more expensive it may put the attendees at risk of being expelled from the event," the BBB says. While Comic-Con 2019 badges are sold out, numerous off-site events packing just as much fun will be held around the San Diego Convention Center and throughout downtown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jonathan Goldwasser was one of the first business owners to set up shop inside One Paseo in Del Mar Heights. He opened the Parakeet Cafe when One Paseo’s retail area launched in March 2019 - and followed that up a few months later with Juice Crafters. He says business is of course best when the plaza is full. However, One Paseo has been anything but full since March, when coronavirus restrictions went into effect.“This has been hard,” Goldwasser said. “We went from maybe 20 employees to four.”Things, however, changed this week, when One Paseo fully reopened its retail center. On Thursday, there were people sitting at its socially distant tables and chairs, while shoppers in masks walked down its courtyard.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said, noting he’s back up to about 20 workers.About 25% of the center’s 40-plus businesses are mom-and-pops that rely on foot traffic.Juice Crafters closed entirely and Parakeet Cafe was reduced to takeout and delivery, sales going down 80%. They’ve since recovered and are now off 40% from pre-coronavirus levels.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said. The City Council approved One Paseo, a residential, retail and office complex in 2015. However, a referendum from nearby residents and the mall across the street ensued. Developer Kilroy scaled back the center to its current 0 million version, which opened last year just south of Del Mar Heights Road. Now that it’s open, there are social distancing rules in place. The center has also increased security to ensure the rules are followed and added sanitation protocols. Most of One Paseo’s retailers are now open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 1789

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It is officially Wildfire Preparedness Week in California and federal, state, and local agencies are working together to ensure a safe wildfire season.California’s wet winter created overgrown vegetation across the state, including in San Diego, and once that starts drying up and dying, things could get dangerous. The message is clear: California wildfires have changed and the public needs to adapt.“Our firefighters have been preparing non-stop for the inevitable fires that will happen this year. However, preparation involved all levels of the community, from first responders to the general public,” said Chief Thom Porter, Cal Fire Director.RELATED: Team 10: A closer look at San Diego brush clearance citationsPorter said the public must prepare. Homeowners should create defensible space around their property and families should always have go bags and an evacuation plan prepared.Cal Fire’s Ready for Wildfire app is free to download and offers preparation tools year-round. Homeowners can find checklists on the app and create evacuation plans as well. San Diego County is also preparing. At a news conference Friday, Supervisor Dianne Jacob said the county is taking extra steps to protect homes here locally.“Working with Cal Fire, the county is preparing to launch a grant program to encourage existing homeowners in high risk areas to install safer walls, vents, and other fire resistant materials to their homes,” said Jacob.RELATED: It's wildfire season! Here's how to prepare for the worst2018's West Fire in San Diego County destroyed many homes and displaced families. Other fires in California killed dozens of people and leveled entire neighborhoods.“The last couple of years have been really challenging and last year in particular way too many people being killed by wildfire and injured,” said Porter. “We need to be ready, we need to be set, and we need to go."Wildfire Preparedness Week gives California residents a chance to reduce the number of wildfires by increasing public preparedness and safety through education. 2075

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a normal school year, thousands of San Diego families rely on after-school programs to help with child care and tutoring. But with schools going virtual this fall amid the pandemic, groups like the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Clubs plan to expand after-school programs into full-day operations to alleviate the burden on working families.“It’s a whole new world for us. And it’s a whole new world for families,” said Greg Erickson of the YMCA of San Diego County. “There has never been a greater demand for these types of programs than right now and so the Y has to be ready, and we will.”Beginning in August, the Y will ramp up staffing to offer full-day and half-day enrichment options for kids from kindergarten through middle school. The goal is to have kids in supervised activities from about 8 am to 4:30 pm, with half the day set aside for games and social enrichment and the other half supporting distance learning.“You can imagine a staff member with 10 kids in a classroom, each on a different Zoom call,” Erickson said. Staff members will not be credentialed teachers, he added, but the Y is interested in recruiting substitute teachers or college students studying education. The location of these childcare programs will vary across the county: some will be offered at YMCA facilities, some will be at school sites, and others will be at third-party facilities like community centers and churches. With demand for childcare expected to be high as long as school campuses are closed, the YMCA is actively scouting locations that can host enrichment programs for an indeterminate amount of time, Erickson said. The YMCA already serves about 15,000 kids in its after-school programs, said Association Director of Public Relations and Communications Courtney Pendleton. The YMCA expects to announce more specifics about the program this week, Erickson said. The cost to families is still being determined and will hinge on whether the YMCA is permitted to use state grants to offset expenses, he said. The Boys & Clubs of Greater San Diego said it planned to open select locations for all-day enrichment programs, “helping members with their distance learning activities in the morning and then transitioning to the traditional club programs in the afternoon,” said spokeswoman Ashley Schumacher.“Once local schools are able to resume in-person operations, we’ll revert back to an after school program,” she said, adding that more information about the clubs that will reopen would be available in early August. 2551
