SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Soon after the pandemic forced Chollas Creek Elementary to close its campus back in March, parents have been able to pick up meals for their children they usually received while attending classes. To help provide this service to families, the San Diego Food Bank helps distribute boxes of food to those who need it.Food Bank CEO James Floros says the organization is now serving 47 school sites in eight different districts. Before the pandemic, the Food Bank helped around 350,000 people; that number has now doubled. With distance learning continuing into the fall, non-profits, the districts, and the county are all trying to make sure kids don't go hungry while they learn at home."We knew when COVID hit that this was going to be a marathon, not a sprint and even if we had a vaccine tomorrow and COVID went away... now we're in a recession and we could be doing this for the next couple of years," Floros said.If parents can't make it to their child's school regularly to pick up meals, they can go to the Food Bank's super pantries. There are dozens of locations all over the county, each open at least three days a week to provide groceries. In addition to the Food Bank, Feeding San Diego is also partnering with local school districts to distribute food. Both websites have sections to look up where to get food in your neighborhood and what resources are available. At many locations, all you have to do is show up, no questions asked."There's enough food for everybody they just need to reach out to the San Diego Food Bank, we'll help their families," said Floros.TO HELP OR FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SERVICES go to:https://feedingsandiego.org/get-help/https://sandiegofoodbank.org/gethelp/ 1731

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some of the nation's top Democrats in the country have gathered in San Diego for California's three-day Democratic Party Convention.About 3,400 Democratic delegates are expected to submit endorsements for California governor, U.S. senator, and other state offices during the convention.Among the leaders attending are Sen. Kamala Harris, D- California, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D- San Francisco, and Rep. Adam Schiff, D- California 28th District — who has sparred with President Donald Trump publicly in the past.RELATED: Workers protest outside Democratic Party ConventionRep. Schiff told 10News reporter Jon Horn that he believes Rick Gates's guilty plea will be a hot-button topic during the convention."[Mueller] now has another very important cooperating witness, somebody who was at the center of the Trump campaign, and someone who can shed a lot of light not only on Paul Manafort and the effort to launder money from Pro-Russian interests but also the inner workings of the campaign, so I think it’s a very important development," Schiff said.Gate, who is a former aide to the 2016 Trump presidential campaign, pleaded guilty this week to conspiracy and making false statements as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling during 2016's presidential election.Jon's report will air Saturday on 10News at 7 p.m.RELATED: San Diego hosts debate for gubernatorial candidatesAnother issue is likely to be gun controls, calls of which have increased in the last week following the Florida shooting at Marjory Douglas Stoneman High. Students from the school have led protests and social media calls for action from lawmakers."Our generation, their parent's generation have done them a horrible disservice by allowing the proliferation of military grade weapons onto our streets, but they’re taking matters into their own hands," Schiff said of those calling for new legislation.Sen. Dianne Feinstein slammed President Trump as she addressed attendees Saturday morning."I have never seen the presidency and I’m going to say it, as disgraced as it is today," Feinstein said.RELATED: California Democratic Party convention begins in San DiegoSaturday will feature speeches by gubernatorial candidates as well as candidates for other California offices. Programs on mobilizing women to run for office and vote, a celebration of black voters, a series of speeches by labor leaders and millennial elected and party officials are also scheduled. 2567

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's next big attraction is on track to open later this spring.Construction on the park's Tidal Twister roller coaster is set to be completed in May of this year, the park said Wednesday. An educational feature of the ride will include an aquarium highlighting the importance of Rising Tide Conservation, a group started by SeaWorld aimed at promoting sustainable aquaculture and coral reef protection.RELATED:New dive coaster 'Mako' coming to SeaWorld in 2020SeaWorld San Diego announces Tidal Twister coaster, annual pass programSeaWorld's new Electric Eel roller coaster opens to the publicTidal Twister will be located in the northwest corner of the park, near the Aquariua: World of Fishes aquarium and tide pool. The ride will joins the park's growing coaster-type attractions, alongside Manta and Electric Eel, the latter of which opened in 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Chicano Park is already a local icon. But soon, the mural-clad location could be listed within the National Park System. The Chicano Park Preservation Act (H.R. 486), introduced in January by Rep. Juan Vargas of the 51st Congressional District, would require the Department of the Interior to conduct a special resource study of Chicano Park and its murals and evaluate the site's national significance. Depending on those results, the agency would determine the feasibility of adding the park to the National Park System (NPS).Tuesday, the bill was the subject of hearings by the House Natural Resources' subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands.RELATED: Celebrating Community: Chicano Park approaches 50th anniversaryShould Chicano Park be granted NPS status, it would continue to be managed outside of the system but qualify for National Historic Site federal protections and aid.In January, Rep. Vargas said Chicano Park has been at the center of San Diego's cultural history for decades."A testament to San Diego’s tradition of community building and activism, Chicano Park has been the center of cultural history for decades," said Rep. Juan Vargas. "Adorned with vibrant murals, sculptures, and beautiful landscaping, the Park extends throughout seven acres, making it the largest collection of outdoor murals in the entire country."RELATED: Interactive map: Exploring San Diego's history, culture through street art"Designating Chicano Park as an Affiliated Site will not only honor the resilient spirit of an entire community, it will cement its significance in American history for generations to come."Located underneath the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, Chicano Park was created in 1970 after the Barrio Logan community boycotted the construction of a California Highway Patrol station. In 1980, it received designation as an official historical site by the San Diego Historical Site Board. Chicao Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and as a National Historical Landmark in 2016.RELATED: Lease approved for Chicano Park museum and community centerThe park is adorned in murals representing San Diego and Chicano history and culture. Roughly 80 murals cover the legs of the bridge.Victor Ochoa, who painted some of the murals, told 10News the history depicted in Chicano Park's art is truly representative of the community because it lacks censorship and showcases important figures."The park in itself acts as kind of like an obstacle to just eradicate our heritage, our history, our community," Ochoa said. "I see the spiritual energy more and more in the park and the murals, and the murals become even more historical documents."On April 20, 2020, Chicano Park will celebrate its 50th anniversary. 2801

The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith. The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend. Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport.
