SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans fled Hurricane Lane's path taking flights Thursday evening from the Hawaiian islands to California. The first time a hurricane will make landfall on the islands since 1992, inspiring fear in vacationers and those who are hunkering down.RELATED: San Diego rescue teams head to Hawaii for Hurricane Lane"Some of the rain would be so loud you couldn’t even talk, you’d be yelling at one another," Steven Bohn said. He moved from San Diego to the big island two years ago for his fiance, who is attending pharmacy school. He said the bands of weather leading up to the brunt of the storm started hitting faster, leaving shorter windows of respite."It looks like it might be coming back pretty soon I don’t think I want to stand out here too long," Bohn said. "The floodwaters have completely destroyed the Bayfront. The downtown road area, there’s no access there whatsoever the cops have blocked that off."He's an occupational therapist and told 10News he was making calls earlier in the day, checking on his clients and ensuring they didn't need medications or help evacuating. He said emergency crews patrolled the area about every 45 minutes, keeping everyone safe. Other signs of disaster preparation were visible in stores, full of bare shelves.Bohn said they're prepared."We’ll be staying indoors," he said. "Closing all the windows and pulling all the shades down in case of the glass."Bohn believes Hawaiians will endure, and said "I’m just hoping that Oahu, Maui, Kawai even the small island of Lanai, they all are going to be okay, and hunker down and get ready for a rough one."In San Diego, passengers sighed a breath of relief as they waited at baggage claim."We have kindergarten starting for my little daughter here on Monday, she’s very excited, and it’s important we made it back," Essam Khouri said. His in-laws are still on Maui. He said their flight was canceled and they're sheltering in place until they can fly back on Saturday.Carolyn Krebs said they made the decision Tuesday, after seeing the latest hurricane path projection, to cut their vacation short."We called Alaska airlines and changed our flight and paid a lot of extra money but at the end of the day it was a good call we’re home safe," Krebs said.Everyone was thankful to be home safe. 2380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Uber will remove all rental bikes and scooters from San Diego next week, the company said Thursday. The rideshare company, which expanded into rentals, will cease its two-wheeled operations Sept. 19. Uber will continue to operate in partnership with Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Point Loma. “We agree with local elected officials in San Diego who’ve said current micromobility regulations foster an unsustainable operating environment, which is why we’re ending our operations as of today. We look forward to working with the city to develop more sensible regulations,” a company spokesperson told 10News. "This is simply a market correction in an oversaturated industry that jeopardizes the safety of San Diegans and visitors. I continue to call for a moratorium on electric scooters until we develop a fiscally responsible and well thought-out plan that priorities public and environmental safety," said City Councilwoman Barbara Bry.In May, the San Diego City Council implemented new regulations for dockless scooters as a way to increase public safety while also allowing the companies to stay in San Diego. Companies were required to pay a permit fee of about ,000 every six months, create corrals, and enforce a speed limit as low as 3 miles per hour in certain areas. The rules also banned parking scooters near schools, hospitals, or near Petco Park.Uber brought the red and black JUMP e-scooters and bikes into the San Diego market in fall 2018, offering free rides during the introductory period. The scooters are currently available in 13 U.S. cities, according to Uber’s website. JUMP bikes are available in 20 U.S. cities. “We plan to work with the city to help build sensible regulations in the near future and look forward to returning to San Diego in the future,” Uber officials said. 1836

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Only in San Diego, an Easter egg hunt on the beach! Hundreds of kids were out in Mission Beach looking for eggs spread out in the sand. Belmont Park hosted the event for the 5th year in a row. Over 13,000 eggs were scattered in the sand, filled with candy, ride wristbands and food vouchers. The hunt was scheduled in age groups so the smaller children would also have a chance to find the prizes. A second Easter egg hunt happened inside of Belmont Park completely free to the public. The event is so popular that some traveled from out of state and even out of the country to have their kids look for the eggs in the sand. Some of the Easter eggs had golden tickets inside, with prizes worth up to .  763

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Vehicles remain one of the top causes of wildfires in San Diego County, according to numbers released by Cal Fire. Most recently, the Carr Fire that burned thousands of acres in Redding, Calif., was blamed on a flat tire leading to a car's wheel rim scraping on the asphalt. In San Diego County, vehicles remain the top two causes of wildfires, officials said. This could be due to a faulty catalytic converter, metal chains, or even pulling over in a brushy, dry area on the side of the road.RELATED: SDG&E's Skycrane helicopter facing challenging fire season in San Diego County"People just need to be really cognizant and think about the fire danger risk when they’re driving and need to pull over,” Kendal Bortisser, CAL FIRE and County Fire captain, said. "Sometimes people are unaware that if they pull off the road and there’s grass, it could catch fire.  It could be a really bad move."In 2016, local wildfires were caused by: 969

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While San Diego's restaurants and retail have been allowed to reopen with modifications, hairstylists and barbers are still waiting for their chance to welcome back clients.Mark Kulch, owner of Salon on 30th, says while California has yet to provide any guidance to salons, he and other salon owners are brainstorming how to reopen safely."We're doing our best to anticipate, however, nothing's been published yet," Kulch says. RELATED: What to know: Changes at beaches, restaurants this Memorial Day weekendCalifornia has yet to publish any criteria for Stage 3 businesses, which include "higher-risk workplaces" like personal care, recreational venues, entertainment, and exercise. So far, some salon owners are already planning changes including employees using face shields, masks, moving clients during hair appointments more instead of employees moving around the client."Our industry, specifically, is very well trained for this," Kulch said. "This is something we've always had to do, so we're just intensifying it."RELATED: San Diego County malls start to reopen SaturdayCustomers may also need to call when they arrive as some locations plan to get rid of their waiting areas. Brenda Barnaby, owner of Wild Honey Salons, believes safety and cleanliness will help customers feel safe as well."If the early birds come out and they have a good experience, and they write about the good experience, it's going to slowly ease people back into the salons," Barnaby says. 1500
