At first, your loved one with Alzheimer's may not react well to wearing a mask or having to wash their hands consistently, but the Alzheimer's Foundation of America says there are things you can do to ensure they are safe during this time."You have to do your best to try, but you also have to be forgiving of yourself and understand that there are limits to what you can do. Some of the nice things about these masks are some of them can be lovely and fun. You can pick masks that have themes or that have resonance with that person," Dr. Allison B. Reiss with The Alzheimer's Foundation of America, told KIVI-TV.For those who don't like the consistent handwashing, Dr. Reiss says buying soaps with a fragrance can make a big difference and encourage them to wash their hands more often."I think a lot of us have that, that olfactory memory, so a scent that you enjoy brings such good feelings. Like cinnamon apple smells of apple pie and childhood, vanilla. You know many people love the scent of a warm home kitchen or the scent of outdoors and flowers and gardens and grass. ATLANTIS, Fla. — A nurse at JFK Medical Center in Atlantic, Florida, gave a unique, inside look at the ups and downs that medical staff experienced this year helping save lives during the coronavirus pandemic.Traveling thousands of miles from Florida, John Paul Rosario proudly shared his vacation pictures from Egypt from the beginning of the year. As the Carr Fire becomes the seventh most destructive wildfire in California's history, renowned chefs Guy Fieri and José Andrés are doing everything they can to help feed the evacuees and first responders."My team and I got involved. My son and his buddies, and a bunch of my buddies, loaded up the caravan from wine country and drove four hours up here," Fieri said."We are just working arm-in-arm with the Salvation Army, local chefs, residents and everybody helping out all of the evacuees."More than 12,300 firefighters are battling 15 wildfires burning across California. In total, these fires have burned more than 280,000 acres, and forced more than 44,000 residents to evacuate.The Carr Fire began on July 23 in Northern California, and on Saturday Fieri arrived in Redding, a city of almost 100,000 people where the fire swept through. Two days after Fieri got there, José Andrés' nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, joined him and fellow food first responders, Operation BBQ Relief."We hit the ground on Monday and started our meal operation today. Guy is heading to the Lake County Fire and we are taking over, and continue the efforts here in Redding," said Nate Mook, Executive Director for World Central Kitchen.With the help of Operation BBQ Relief, Fieri and his team were able to make over 1,000 meals twice a day, Mook said.BBQ Relief, whose main mission is to feed those affected by natural disasters in the United States, has around 30 volunteers and with World Central Kitchen's help it totals to 100 people on the ground to help feed those in need."We are planning to do 5,000 meals a day or more, depending on the need. We have the capacity and are prepared to cook 5,000 meals a day with no problem," Mook said.Fieri, alongside World Central Kitchen and BBQ Relief, are able to plan where help is needed the most by working with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, who oversee the incident response.That way they can travel across the state to help everyone affected by the multiple wildfires."It's unbelievable to see what folks are going through, but it's even more unbelievable just how great this community is, and [to see] all these folks that have come together," Fieri said.Andrés is not in California, but he has been monitoring the situation and will fly in if needed."We got six chefs in Redding. Depending on the need we will bring more chefs and volunteers. We don't know what the next four days will look like, so he will be paying close attention," Mook said.Andrés recently left Guatemala, where he and his team were able to make more than 325,000 meals for those?affected by the volcano eruption last month.Mook said that even though the numbers can look a bit overwhelming, the volunteers get inspiration and passion to help those in need from all the support they receive from the communities."At the end of the day you just have to start somewhere, and just start cooking, cooking until everyone is fed," Mook said.As for Fieri, he takes pride in all the folks who drop everything just to help."We're in tough times ... with all of the things going on, you take a moment like this and you really see America is made of a lot of great people coming together," Fieri said. 3252

Astronomers looking at the atmosphere in neighboring Venus see something that might just be a sign of life.In a study published Monday, researchers from Cardiff University, MIT and elsewhere say they found the chemical signature of a noxious gas called phosphine.On Earth, phosphine is associated with life. It's found at the bottom of ponds, in badger guts and in penguin guano.Venus’ phosphine was observed in a narrow, temperate band within the planet’s atmospheres, where temperatures range from 30 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists have speculated that if life exists on Venus, this layer of the atmosphere, or cloud deck, is likely the only place where it would survive, according to MIT.“This phosphine signal is perfectly positioned where others have conjectured the area could be habitable,” said the study’s co-author and EAPS Research Scientist Janusz Petkowski.Astronomers tried to figure out other, non-biological ways it could be produced and came up empty.“It’s very hard to prove a negative,” said Clara Sousa-Silva, research scientist in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS). “Now, astronomers will think of all the ways to justify phosphine without life, and I welcome that. BAKERSFIELD, California — A Kern County, California judge decided Thursday to set free a man who's been on death row for 26 years.Vicente Benavides, 68, was freed from San Quentin Prison Thursday afternoon.The judge said all Benavides' charges were changed to not guilty.  His defense attorney told KERO television station that Benavides will not have to return to Kern County.On Tuesday, District Attorney Lisa Green made the announcement that her office would not file charges against Benavides, saying the case would be nearly impossible to retry in court. She said it would be very difficult to convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt of Benavides' guilt.According to a decision released by the California Supreme Court last month, the convictions of Vicente Benavides in 1993 "were based on false evidence and that he received ineffective assistance of counsel."The decision also says that "false evidence was introduced at trial and that petitioner's convictions of substantive sexual offenses, special-circumstance findings, and judgment of death must be vacated."Benavides was convicted in 1993 of first-degree murder, rape, and other charges. He was sentenced to life. He was serving his term on death row in San Quentin. It was asked that his murder conviction be reduced to second-degree murder. That was also thrown out. The judgment has been vacated entirely. Benavides' defense attorney says his client's case is extremely rare, saying only two similar cases have occurred since the death penalty was reinstated in the 1970's.The California Supreme Court cited multiple doctors who evaluated 21-month-old Consuelo Verdugo in November 1991 when she died. The baby was taken from the Delano Regional Medical Center to Kern Medical Center then eventually the UCLA Medical Center where she died November 25, 1991.Multiple reports were made by doctors who said based on the inability to insert a catheter, bruising found near Consuelo's genitalia and other factors, they believed she had been sexually assaulted. 2101
