When the pandemic hit, a Southern California man made it his mission to make sure under-represented communities and minority-owned businesses didn't fail. What started as a small online movement grew into the thousands. It has one goal: to help one another.Keven Seo is the self-titled "super connector."“As an extroverted extrovert, the No. 1 way to kill an extrovert is to put them in quarantine,” Seo said. The quarantine wasn't his style.“I love connecting people, I love communities, I like connecting pieces so when I hear people talk about a business or what they need or who they need, I love introducing them to each other and watching that relationship happen,” Seo said. But, that's not really possible during a complete lockdown -- so one would think."I noticed there was a lot of hardship and they did vocalize ‘hey, our business isn’t doing so well,’” Seo said. “[When] I started seeing this, I realized our community didn’t have a place to see each other, talk, meet, not just discuss problems but see how we can help each other with our connections.”He created a small space on the internet called "Network with Kevin" for Asian-Americans.“Asking for help is hard, too, like as an Asian-American, I was taught to put my head on the ground, work hard and that’s it,” Seo said. “But (for) a lot of us, community is so important, we have to do it together so I really try to create a community of genuine connection.”They meet weekly on Zoom and talk about hardships and how to reach out. New partnerships have formed such as new tech companies and restaurants amid the COVID-19 shutdown. These partnerships formed because of Seo’s work.“I’m Asian-American and an immigrant and if I go up to another Asian-American, they’re going to trust what I say we’re growing up in the same background," Seo said. “That way we can connect faster and help each other faster and right now is a critical time for that."He says, it sounds silly, but one of the first things he did was go to small Asian-owned restaurants and highlight their food to help drive business. One of those businesses is Modern Filipino Kitchen in Anaheim, California.“We serve Filipino food; we do Filipino culture with a modern look but we also keep the traditional flavors that you’d find in the Philippines,” Henry Pineda, the restaurant’s owner and chef.Pineda says opening a restaurant was a childhood dream of his.“My family in the Philippines, they have a restaurant,” Pineda said. “They’ve been open 30 years. Every time we go back, I found myself in their restaurant causing havoc over there.”When the shutdown happened, he lost more than 80% of his business and he was scared. Enter Seo and his "Network with Kevin" community.“A lot of people didn’t know who we were,” Pineda said. “They were able to see us and come support through his network and we’re a small mom and pop. We don’t have a budget for marketing or a PR person so that video and him putting us out there really helped us out and drive people to us.”In turn, Pineda says, he's helped others who are out of work, by holding popup restaurant events to give people a job. And they've all found common ground in a common group of friends, helping one another.“What I was taught growing up was this symbol for human being was another human leaning on a human being that’s what I was taught at a young age to always rely on the community and that’s why it’s important to me today," Seo said. For the extroverted extrovert, he says, at the very least, he has a ton of friends and they have a bond that only they will recognize. “It brings familiarity," Seo said. "It's very similar cultures so there’s more understanding what someone else has gone through or what family background they have with their upbringing." 3760

WILSON, N.C. – The father of a 5-year-old boy who was fatally shot outside his North Carolina home says he cannot understand why someone would want to harm his son.Austin Hinnant told WRAL that his son, Cannon, was playing on his bike in the yard of their Wilson home when he heard a gunshot while inside.Hinnant says he ran outside and found Cannon suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He scooped his son up in his arms and screamed for someone to help. The father claims he looked up and saw his neighbor, Darius Sessoms, in the yard next door, with a gun in his hand, pacing."I was looking at him as I was picking up Cannon,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I was so full of rage, but I couldn't leave my son's side. I wanted to be with my son."The boy was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died.A warrant was issued for Sessoms and police say he was taken into custody on Monday. The 25-year-old has been charged with 1st degree murder and is being held without bond.Sessoms doesn’t appear to be a stranger to the family. Hinnant says he had Sessoms over for dinner just the night before."I have no idea why he would kill my son in front of his two sisters and his cousin,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I have no idea."Law enforcement has not provided any details regarding a possible motive for Cannon’s murder.A funeral for the little boy was held Thursday. WNCN reports that hundreds gathered at the Shingleton Funeral Home in Wilson to pay their respects, including Cannon’s grandmother, Merrill Race.Race told WNCN that Cannon was “just a kid trying to have fun in his own yard and something like this happens. It’s despicable.”"Everybody just loved Cannon. He lit up the room," said Hinnant, according to WRAL.CNN contributed to this report. 1753

Will be going to Georgia for a big Trump Rally in support of our two great Republican Senators, David and Kelly. They are fantastic people who love their Country and love their State. We must work hard and be sure they win. #USA— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 2, 2020 289

With COVID-19 cases surging across the country, public health officials and ICU doctors are pleading with Americans to reconsider gathering with family members ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday for fear of spreading the virus even further.“We really don’t have a national or even multi-state plan, and that worries me,” said Dr. Stephen Morse with Columbia University. While he strongly recommends against it, Dr. Morse knows inevitably some people will still get together on Thursday. His advice is to have a multi-layered safety approach. The first layer involves testing. He’s urging people to avoid those rapid tests if they can because they’re less accurate. With so many Americans trying to get tested right now, officials also say it’s important to plan ahead and be prepared to potentially not get results back before Thanksgiving.“Testing is really important because it’s the only way we can find people who aren’t obviously sick and stop them,” Dr. Morse added.Health officials say if you are planning a small family gathering, get tested before you see high-risk family members. Americans are also being urged to consider virtual holiday gatherings whenever possible. If you are gathering with people outside your household, eat in separate rooms or consider eating outdoors.“What I’ve seen is once it gets into a family, because we let our guard down around our family, everybody gets infected,” explained Dr. John Coleman, who works in the ICU at Northwestern University’s teaching hospital in Chicago.Dr. Coleman says there are just too many variables to consider when it comes to gathering for Thanksgiving this year.“I think we are on the cusp of some very, very dark months. What we’ve seen is the increase of COVID across the nation is going to eventually stress the health system.” 1804

While many Americans do it, taking a selfie with a completed ballot is considered a crime in many states. For much of American history, ballots were intended to be secret. But as social media usage has exploded, more and more Americans are taking pictures with their ballots, and or at polling places. Most of these photos are harmless, but that doesn’t mean they’re fully legal in some states. In response, seveal states have changed their laws regarding ballot selfies.According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and Utah have made changes to their laws in the last five years which allow some form of ballot selfies.Other states, however, have tried to curtail ballot selfies. For instance, Alabama passed a law last year that prohibits taking a photograph of a ballot, or otherwise revealing the contents of a completed ballot.Another state, New Hampshire, attempted to pass a law to restrict ballot selfies. However, a federal appeals court ruled 3-0 that the state had not shown that it was using the least restrictive means to achieve a compelling state interest of prohibiting voting fraud. According to the ruling, New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner was unable to show examples of how ballot photography led to voting fraud."The restriction affects voters who are engaged in core political speech, an area highly protected by the First Amendment," the ruling states. "There is an increased use of social media and ballot selfies in particular in service of political speech by voters. A ban on ballot selfies would suppress a large swath of political speech."Indiana also had a law passed in 2015 that would have made ballot selfies a felony struck down by a federal judge. In Colorado, the state made it legal in 2017 to take ballot pictures.Nationally, laws vary from state to state. While some states may permit photography of a completed mail-in ballot, the state might prohibit photography at a voting site.CNN has compiled a state-by-state list of what is permitted and not permitted in each state. 2104
