WILSON, N.C. – The father of a 5-year-old boy who was fatally shot outside his North Carolina home says he cannot understand why someone would want to harm his son.Austin Hinnant told WRAL that his son, Cannon, was playing on his bike in the yard of their Wilson home when he heard a gunshot while inside.Hinnant says he ran outside and found Cannon suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He scooped his son up in his arms and screamed for someone to help.The father claims he looked up and saw his neighbor, Darius Sessoms, in the yard next door, with a gun in his hand, pacing."I was looking at him as I was picking up Cannon,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I was so full of rage, but I couldn't leave my son's side. I wanted to be with my son."The boy was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died.A warrant was issued for Sessoms and police say he was taken into custody on Monday. The 25-year-old has been charged with 1st degree murder and is being held without bond.Sessoms doesn’t appear to be a stranger to the family. Hinnant says he had Sessoms over for dinner just the night before."I have no idea why he would kill my son in front of his two sisters and his cousin,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I have no idea."Law enforcement has not provided any details regarding a possible motive for Cannon’s murder.A funeral for the little boy was held Thursday. WNCN reports that hundreds gathered at the Shingleton Funeral Home in Wilson to pay their respects, including Cannon’s grandmother, Merrill Race.Race told WNCN that Cannon was “just a kid trying to have fun in his own yard and something like this happens. Although Columbus was the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings established colonies in the 10th century, the History Channel says he viewed the native people as obstacles.Columbus is accused of labeling the indigenous people as “Indians.” Other points of controversy revolve around the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of native people to Christianity, and the introduction of deadly diseases.As a result of these points, Native Americans and other groups have protested the celebration of Columbus Day, viewing it as a celebration of the colonization of America, the beginning of the slave trade, and the deaths of natives from murder and disease.In the past few years, there’s been a movement to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which honors Native American histories and cultures. Several states now celebrate or observe that holiday instead of or in conjunction with Columbus Day.A total of 14 states, Washington D.C. and more than 130 cities observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, USA Today reports. With a mask covering his face and his fingers playing a disinfected piano, musician Purnell Steen and his band, Le Jazz Machine, are back to doing what they love: playing music in front of a live audience, but now from a regulated distance.“It is a new learning experience for all us,” Steen said.After being shut down for months due to coronavirus concerns, Steen is back on his home stage at Dazzle in downtown Denver, one of the top 100 jazz bars in the world.“For the entire month of June, we did as much as much revenue as we used to do on a good Saturday,” said Matt Ruff, Dazzle general manager.Ruff says new safety guidelines that allow live music venues like his to operate are impacting his bottom line.“Capacity went from 50 to 100 people,” he said. “But it’s still 6-foot distancing between tables and the closest table to the stage has to be 25 feet away from the stage.”Though he’s thankful to reopen, Ruff is also questioning some of those safety measures, like no longer allowing wind instruments to be played on stage.“I think that’s based on faulty information,” he said. "People think that horns project something, but the science is just not there.”Some scientists, however, believe those brass instruments could hit a sour note when it comes to health.“You’re blowing from the lungs, so they are respiratory droplets and that’s the primary means by which this virus is transmitted,” said Sheryl Zajdowicz, Ph.D., a biology professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.This infectious disease specialist says while live music could be good for the soul, social distancing could be even better for one’s health.“When you’re at a music venue, you’re kind of up against each other,” she said. “It’s going to be very challenging to limit that from happening.”That’s where Live Nation comes in.This entertainment group is now promoting “Live from the Drive-In,” a new live music experience where people can watch and listen to top artists from their own individual tailgate zones at outdoor concerts across the country.Back at Dazzle, fans say live music is what they need during this pandemic.And while the new normal on stage could be confining for artists, they believe live music will help calm emotions as the virus moves towards a crescendo.“If we can bring a few moments of joy to somebody than we have performed our mission,” Steen said. 2376

When Jeff Hill returned to his neighborhood in Paradise, California, after evacuating during the Camp fire, he came across a wayward horse -- in a backyard swimming pool. The horse appeared to have jumped in to escape the flames, and was caught in the pool cover.He had been checking on a neighbor's house to see if it was still standing when he discovered the horse, Hill wrote in a Facebook post."We scrambled to unhook the pool cover and pulled her to the shallow end where we guided her up the steps." The horse got out, shook off, and "loved on us for a few minutes as a thank you, and walked off," he wrote.Hill called for help, and waited with the horse until resources could escort the horse out from the fire zone.As wildfires raged in different parts of California, residents were forced to evacuate -- some without getting the chance to go home and grab their four-legged friends.Searchers combing through the charred areas have rescued hundreds of animals -- including dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, ducks, and a tortoise.Now, community organizations and good Samaritans are rallying to shelter the displaced animals and reunite them with their owners. 1170
