SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Frustrating.Difficult.How do we do this? Those sentiments were echoed by numerous San Diego parents as they reflected on distance learning at the beginning of this pandemic. Unless San Diego County is able to get off the state’s monitoring list for COVID-19, it is likely all the schools will start the year virtually. Most local districts have already announced plans for distance learning. Poway Unified School District, which originally planned to offer either on-campus learning or a virtual academy, is considering delaying the start of their school year to September 2nd to see if there was a way to still offer some in-person instruction.“You’re trapped and almost feel a sense of hopelessness,” said Patrick Batten. He has four children in the Poway Unified School District, with the eldest recently graduating from high school.DISCUSSION: ABC 10News Ask The Experts: Navigating Distance Learning with Dr. Joseph LathanAt this point, he is anticipating all of his kids to start their school years online. It is something he said did not work well when the schools were forced into distance learning in March. His son, also named Patrick, is entering the fifth grade. “It was tough,” he said, when asked about his online experience with school. The elder Batten and his wife both work full-time, mostly from home since the start of the pandemic. If there is no in-person instruction, they are considering participating in a learning pod, where eight to 10 families will hire a private teacher to help homeschool.“We’ll spend potentially ,000 a month per child to have a teacher that will, in a sense, do the homeschooling for them,” Batten said. He acknowledges that he is fortunate that his family can even entertain this option.“We’re going to see just an incredibly widening equity gap in our communities and I think that’s the more disheartening thing of all of this,” he added.Gina Chavez has three children in the Sweetwater Union High School District. “We [were] thrown into a situation with blinders on,” she said. Two of her children have special needs and have IEPs, or Individualized Education Programs. “It was even more challenging for them because that’s not the way they’re used to learning,” Chavez said.As a teacher, she understands parents’ frustration. As someone who has asthma, she also understands the health concerns for her and her family. “I want them to go back when it is safe for them to go back and I want them to go back when I know they will be protected,” Chavez said.Tancy Campbell’s young kids are in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. When the district announced it would be starting the year virtually, she was okay with the decision, but is still worried about how her 5-year-old son with autism will learn.“He has some of his needs met through online occupational therapy and speech therapy, but that social aspect is still going to be in the back of my mind,” Campbell said. As a stay-at-home mom with an online business and a military husband who is away regularly, she is trying to mentally prepare for the upcoming year.“It’s just going to be like jumping into something brand new and trying to navigate, so it’s a little exciting, but it makes you anxious at the same time," she added.ABC 10News Reporter Melissa Mecija will continue to follow these families' journeys, documenting the ups and downs through the new school year. 3412

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friday, a San Diego woman recounted how she was sexually abused by her priest at St. Jude when she was young, hoping it would encourage others to come forward.Walking up to the church to speak she said she felt a wave of emotions, "My chest was heavy, my stomach was sick. I was catching my breath." She told 10News her name is Cynthia Ann Doe, keeping her last name private, wearing a scarf over her head and dark sunglasses, concealing part of her identity for fear of retaliation. She said she could still see the rectory, where Monsignor Gregory Sheridan lived, next to the church. In it's place is a parking lot.She depicted what her life was like when she was just five-years-old, "I had no one to protect me, my mother and my father divorced when I was four, my brother died months before that." She said they lived inside a brightly painted yellow apartment building, sitting just across the street. Ann Doe said she clung to her faith and her family was honored when Monsignor Sheridan took favor in their company. Alone in his bedroom, her lawyer said he violated her with his fingers. She said at that age she couldn't process what happened, "that you are worthless dirty, a bad person, so bad that even God must not love you, because your priest hurt you and made you feel nasty.""I'm asking anyone male or female who may be struggling with what happened to them by Father Sheridan to come forward and be heard," she said. That call growing louder as more cases arise across the country. Pope Francis issued the first law for officials worldwide Thursday, requiring them to report abuse to their superiors. The local Catholic Church also proactive, publishing a list of priests with credible allegations against them. Monsignor Sheridan listed at the bottom of page seven. The statute of limitations ran out for Cynthia decades ago, but she has one request of the Diocese, asking them to pay for her years of therapy, "I would like to be reimbursed, I can give them every bill from 1981." 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Frank Zamarron, 26, credits his Apple Watch for saving his life.“No warning signs, no pain no nothing,” Zamarron.  “All to know is that my Apple Watch started going off.”It was a Monday night in March, and his watch was alerting him something was wrong.“My heart-rate is elevated, and I'm just sitting at home watching TV relaxing from a long day at work,” he said. “After the fourth alert, I was like okay, something is not right. Time for me to a go to the hospital.”It was a decision that saved his life. It turns out, Zamarron contracted cellulitis, a skin infection, on his right leg. Soon after doctors started treating him, his leg began to blister.“Apparently your body is reacting to the infection trying to fight it off, doing everything it can, raising your heart rate,” Zamarron said. “They said it could have been fatal in a certain situation. Depending on how I treated it. Typically you would take pain pills or something and call it a day.”Zamarron spent seven days in the hospital.Doctors told him his weight might have contributed to the infection. Zamarron is now focused on staying active and getting healthier. 1223

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite the still-high cost of living, San Diego’s housing market is beginning to cool down, according to a new report by Zillow. San Diego ranked third on the list of housing markets seeing the biggest slowdown. San Jose and San Francisco, two markets also known for their high costs of living, places first and second on the list The report shows that conditions in San Diego’s market are favoring buyers more than they did a year ago. RELATED: Home prices rise, sales plungeMore than 20 percent of homes for sale in America’s Finest City had a price cut in January of 2019, compared with only 12.4 percent of homes that saw a cut in January of 2018. Of the homes that have sold, 95.7 percent sell for their listing price. At this time last year, 97.7 percent of homes sold for their list price. The amount of time it takes to sell homes is also on the rise. In 2018, homes sold in 60 days, including time to close, Zillow reports. So far this year, homes are selling in 75 days. RELATED: Realtors expect busy spring for buyers and sellersEven though the market is starting to cool, San Diego’s median home value is 1,400. In comparison, the national median is just 5,300. “It is no surprise that the markets which pushed the bounds of affordability over the housing recovery are now experiencing significant cooling,” said Skylar Olsen, Zillow Director of Economic Research. “As down payments and mortgage payments far outpaced incomes, buyer demand eventually exhausted itself. Those buyers looking in cooling markets will likely welcome the relief, although the entry price is still high. Inventory is returning and spending more time on market, meaning their decision making can be made with a cooler head.”RELATED: How housing got so expensive 1785
