Texas Governor Greg Abbott told KTSA radio on Monday that he plans to send nearly 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the US/Mexico border, after already committing to send 250 troops last week. The announcement came a week after President Donald Trump said he would send the National Guard to the border. Trump said the move was needed to help secure the border. Defense Secretary James Mattis said that up to 4,000 National Guard troops could end up staffing the border.The National Guard will work in a support role along the border, as troops are not allowed to make arrests or perform law enforcement functions. Abbott said troops along the border could be "in this for the long haul.”Troops from New Mexico and Arizona also will work the border. California has yet to commit troops to the border. Although Trump wants to bolster border security, it appears that illegal border crossings are down. Summer camps have been among a number of spots that have been known as “super spreaders” of the coronavirus,” locations where dozens or even hundreds of infections have spread.While there is an inherent risk with holding camps amid the coronavirus pandemic, the CDC says with proper precautions, the risk can be minimized.This week, the CDC outlined efforts by four summer camps in Maine held over the summer. The camps combined for more than 1,000 attendees coming from 41 states or territories. The result was a success, with only three known asymptomatic cases of the virus stemming from the camps. Testing played a key role in minimizing the risk. The attendees were tested days before coming to the camp. Of 1,022 attendees, four tested positive, which delayed their arrival. Attendees were also told to isolate in the days leading up to their arrival.Once at the camp, attendees were frequently checked for symptoms. During the camp, 12 people were isolated at times due to presenting symptoms, but all tested negative for the coronavirus. There were also three cases identified during the camps among asymptomatic attendees, two of whom were staffers. The three attendees were isolated for 10 days and not cleared until receiving two negative tests.“Thoughtful and prudent public health practices used during overnight summer camps in Maine reinforces how powerful everyday preventive actions are in reducing and keeping COVID-19 transmission low,” CDC director Robert Redfield. “Despite more than 1,000 campers and staff from nearly every state and seven countries, only three people tested positive for COVID-19 during the camp and no additional campers or staff were known to be infected. The attorney for the limousine company whose vehicle crashed in upstate New York on Saturday disputed statements from officials that the stretched Ford Excursion should have never been on the road.Prestige Limousine & Chauffer Service attorney Lee Kindlon said the state Department of Transportation conducted a periodic inspection last week and discovered "minor safety infractions" including inoperative or defective windshield wipers and a broken latch on a window.Both issues were fixed and, "as recently as last week they were told by the Department of Transportation that they could, that this vehicle was roadworthy and they could drive it," Kindlon said. "I am disputing that any recent failures of minor safety defects contributed to this crash," he said.State officials charged back, saying the vehicle was not allowed to be in service."The assertion that the limousine was cleared to be on the road following the September inspection is categorically false," said Joseph Morrissey, spokesman for the New York State Department of Transportation, in a statement. "The vehicle was subject to inspections and the owner was warned not to operate the vehicle; the vehicle was placed out of service."For reasons still unknown, the limo plowed through a stop sign in Schoharie and crashed into a parked SUV. The crash left 20 people dead, including the 17 passengers who rented the limo for a birthday party, two pedestrians and the driver.Federal, state and local investigators have flooded Schoharie to try to understand what caused the deadliest U.S. transportation accident in almost a decade. TAMPA, Fla. — Kids may be spending more time online this summer than in years past due to the coronavirus pandemic — and authorities warn online predators could use that extra, unsupervised time to their advantage."They had some incidences where people had broken into their Zoom calls, and what was great about that was because we had created a space where dialogue can happen, they told me about it," Damaris Allen, the Immediate Past President of the Hillsborough County PTA said. "That was really important because we had the groundwork laid."With school out and summer in full swing, many kids are spending their time online during the health crisis. Some officials worry now may be the most dangerous time for online predators."With camps being limited, parents being stretched thin, and kids spending more time online, it creates, unfortunately, a perfect storm for online predators," Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said.Warren released a video on social media Monday with three tips for parents can take to help their kids have a "Secure Summer."First, the State Attorney says talk to your child and explain how they may be approached."Secondly, make sure that parents are actually watching what their kids are doing online," said Warren "Have the passwords, check to see what kids are doing and what information they're receiving."Warren also suggests using parental controls on devices and apps to choose what your child can access. His office says it has already seen online predators try to exploit children during the pandemic."Law enforcement is really paying attention to what's going on online now. We're working overtime to catch online predators," Warren said. "We're going to aggressively prosecute them. We won't stand for anyone trying to take advantage of our kids, especially during such a difficult time for all of us."Parents suggest starting that conversation now, so kids know they have a safe space to start a dialogue."This is a scary topic, don't avoid it because it's a scary topic," said Allen.
