With protests erupting across the country during the pandemic and some calling to defund the police, many people are now looking for new ways to stay safe.“When people start getting stretched and they’re already living on the ends, at what point do you start seeing good people make bad decisions,” said Mark James, owner of Panther Protection Services, a private security company in Atlanta, Georgia. His bodyguard services have increased 40% in the past four months, while the firearms training that he offers has increased more than 300% in the same time frame.“People who have never been gun owners before are now buying guns,” he said. “Those people who are buying guns are saying, ‘I have to learn how to use a gun that I just bought for my own personal protection.’”This increase in private security is happening across the country.“Bodyguard services went up at least 100% since this whole COVID-19 era has started, along with some of the racial tensions that are going on,” said Dexter Ravenell, owner of Around the Clock Security in North Carolina. For the past few months, Ravenell has been getting requests from all kinds of people.“From Blacks, whites, Hispanics, male, female,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this as far as the demand that we are getting.”The cost for Ravenell’s services starts at per hour and goes up from there.“It’s good for business but morally it’s kind of sad to see that we’re coming to that now,” he said.James wouldn’t tell us how much he charges but did give some safety tips for free.“I always walk wide to make sure there’s no one on the other side of my vehicle,” he said.James says the best safety advice he can offer is situational awareness.“I’m always looking at the small things which keep me from having to do big things,” he said. 1801

It’s a nonprofit that began during the pandemic taking struggling restaurants and pairing them with meal orders donated to first responders. Off Their Plate currently operates in nine cities across the U.S. from New York City to San Francisco. “We purchase meals at a meal from our restaurant partners,” Tiwari said. “Half of the cost of each meal goes directly to wages.” That, in turn, allows restaurants, like Emilie’s, to hire back furloughed workers. “We normally have 67,” said Tien. “And then when this first happened, we dropped down to around 15, but now we're back up to 26.” The orders coming in through Off Their Plate also allowed Emilie’s to keep providing health insurance to all its workers, even those they still haven’t been able to hire back. It’s all possible because of donations from corporations and individuals, who’ve given more than million to the cause and restored more than four thousand restaurant worker shifts. “I’m excited about giving people some source of income through this pandemic,” said Tiwari. Yet, Off Their Plate, believes that, ideally, their nonprofit won’t be around forever. “The hope is that the restaurant industry and the health care workers industry really get back to normal, where we're not needed,” Tiwari said. It’s a normalcy Chef Kevin Tien is aiming for – to get every employee back. “Even if it takes one at a time and it takes a little bit longer,” Chief Tien, “but we want to be back.”Off Their Plate is affiliated with the nonprofit “World Central Kitchen.” It’s run by famed restaurant owner and Chef Jose Andres, known for providing free meals to people after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and now at his restaurants around the U.S. during the pandemic. 1758

Young people are notorious for skipping elections, and it's a problem voting advocates have tried solving for decades. This year, they had a big uphill battle, mobilizing future voters virtually.“Pre-pandemic, you and I would probably be interviewing in this beautiful student union of ours," said Armando Sepulveda II. “We would have candidates talking to students, meeting students.”A senior at San Diego State University, Sepulveda is Rock the Vote Chair at his school, working on getting as many students as possible registered to vote. “We were going into the dark because we didn’t have any pre-context of how we could handle a Rock the Vote campaign during a pandemic," said Sepulveda. They couldn’t hold large gatherings to register students to vote or hold candidate debates in auditoriums. On-campus posters were replaced with posts online.“We acknowledged that social media was a great platform to get apathetic students because regardless of what they’re doing during the day, they’re probably going to log onto Instagram at least once or twice," said Sepulveda. To keep students from scrolling past their message, Sepulveda's team focused on design, creating easy-to-read, digestible content. “We wanted to make it as simple and visually interesting as possible," he said. They conducted "Zoom-arounds," crashing club meetings to talk about propositions, how to get your ballot and making sure it’s counted. They also held community forums online with local candidates.“I think a lot of young people want to have a renewed sense in trust in the government, but in order to have that, you have to have people you trust elected," said Sepulveda. Sepulveda says after combining California and out-of-state students, they surpassed their goal of registering 1,400 students to vote. Researchers at Tufts University say youth turnout is surging in many states. More than 7 million young people have already voted early or absentee this election. 1958
