(KGTV) - Two prominent San Diego County leaders are in Washington, D.C., Wednesday to meet with President Trump about California’s sanctuary state laws.County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and Escondido Mayor Sam Abed are among the 16 California leaders who visited the White House to discuss California’s role in the national immigration landscape with the president.In April, both Abed’s city and the County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of supporting the Trump administration’s lawsuit against California over its sanctuary policies."Each of you has bravely resisted California's deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws," Trump told the group gathered in Washington, D.C.During the Wednesday round table, Trump thanked the leaders, saying they had “bravely resisted California’s deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws.Trump claimed those laws are forcing "the release of illegal immigrant criminals, drug dealers, gang members and violent predators into your communities" and providing "safe harbor to some of the most vicious and violent offenders on earth."Trump also said during the meeting that opposition to the sanctuary state laws are growing, adding that "There's a revolution going on in California."Gaspar told the president, "If you look around this room; your tiny but might team; this is what Gov. (KGTV) — Next time you hail an Uber or Lyft, maybe consider some hand sanitizer after touching that door handle.That's because ride-sharing vehicles are on average about 35,000 times germier than a toilet seat, according to a new study by insurance provider Netquote. Ridesharing measured about 6,055,963 colony-colony forming units (CFU) compared to an average toilet with 171.61 CFU.Rideshare vehicles were far ahead of rental cars and even taxis on the study's germ index, and worse than toothbrush holders, coffee reservoirs, and toilets. The worst areas in rideshare vehicles were seat belts, door handles, and window buttons, the study found.RELATED: Uber and Lyft drivers in San Diego go on strike for better wages"In our rideshare vehicles, the window buttons were the worst when it comes to germs. On average, we found more than 5 million [colony-forming units]/sq. in. on the tiny buttons. The seat belts, too, held high levels of bacteria: more than 1 million CFU/sq. in.," the study says. "Interestingly, the door handles were the cleanest surface, with 1,810 CFU/sq. in. However, one study showed that the average car door handle holds 28 microorganisms per square inch – meaning the average rideshare door handle is 64 times germier."The study compared three random ride-share cars, three taxis and three rental cars.While not all germs are harmful, higher levels of some bacteria pose a risk. The study's samples revealed the presences of bacillus (a type that can cause infections and food poisoning); gram-positive rods, including cocci (which is linked to skin infections, pneumonia, and blood poisoning); gram-negative rods (which tend to be harmful to humans); and yeast (which under the right conditions has the potential cause skin infections, especially in people with compromised immune systems). 1828

(KGTV) - Not many people have a Coronado bridge story like Bertha Loaiza.Loaiza was 3-years-old in August of 1985 when her mother jumped from the 246-foot tall bridge holding her.The mother and daughter were unconscious when fisherman pulled them out of the harbor. 24-year-old Angelica Medina never took another breath, but responders were able to resuscitate Bertha.“Honestly it’s hard for even me to believe,” said Loaiza, who suffered a broken hip and cataracts in her right eye from the incident, “My memories blocked out — but I’m good now.’Growing up, her family told her that her mother died in a car accident, but she figured out the real story as a teenager after watching an old news clip.“It makes me sad she didn’t have the resources that are available to everybody today,” said Loaiza.Now 36, Loaiza says she was angry at her mom when she first found out. (KGTV) -- Since 2013, Kitchens for Good has helped fight hunger across San Diego by working with local food backs, created programs to help those with troubled pasts, and now they're adding a baking option to their apprenticeship program.After Kitchens for Good launched their culinary apprenticeship program five years ago, it has led to both success and opportunity. "It's an amazing program here, we are so lucky to be here doing this," said an instructor for their baking program. They added in a baking option to their existing culinary program that launched this month.Their apprenticeships aren't your normal "bake and set" classes. They hope students like Kenneth Donato, take what they learn inside to lead better lives. "Just 3 months ago I was living under a bridge, now my wife and I we're living inside. I'm going to school, I work here, and help them out," said Donato.Directors for the nonprofit said out of their 300 apprentices, 85% landed jobs upon completion. Baking instructor Helen Coyne added, "I see so many opportunities in baking and pastry, and I'm so excited for them to have that." They say adding in a baking program means more students can sign up, in hopes more will get hired.The baking program is a free 20-week hands-on course for those who qualify. 1291
