SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Campaign ads against San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan over a backlog of rape kits to be tested were recently pulled from television.More than a hundred people stood on the steps of San Diego's Hall of Justice, showing support for Stephan, as she blasted her opponent's television campaign ads. The ads were paid for by the Justice and Public Safety PAC, funded by billionaire financier George Soros."We need your help to get the word out, San Diego is not for sale!" Stephan announced in April that her office is spending million for an out-of-state laboratory to test 1,000 rape kits to end a backlog.Stephan's opponent, Genevieve Jones-Wright, stands by the ads, saying she hopes they'll be updated with larger numbers."My reaction ... hopefully, they make it more accurate; not hundreds of backlogged rape kits," Jones-Wright said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews responded Wednesday afternoon to two brush fires that scorched an area near Mission Trails Regional Park. According to firefighters, the fire broke out near Hemingway Drive and Jackson Drive around 1:40 p.m. At this time, it's unclear if any homes are being evacuated.Once crews arrived, they discovered that two spot fires were burning in the same area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bagging vegetables, opening boxes, organizing volunteers.Every month the parking lot at Unity Church in City Heights becomes a mini grocery store."Without this service a lot of people wouldn't even have a plate on the table to be able to say I had my meal today," said Chanae Jackson.Jackson started this food distribution several years back, partnering with Feeding San Diego to make it possible.She also found others who wanted to give back, including her friend Dede Jackson."You have hungry babies at home these places help they help they help feed your family," Jackson explained.Both women know how appreciated the groceries are because in addition to volunteering, they also take home food.They tell ABC 10News there's always been people lining up, but since COVID-19 hit, those lines have grown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Court services are being drastically reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which affects both civil and criminal proceedings. The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments. Then we can at least address individuals who have been arrested,” Shapiro said.The court will still be available for restraining orders, emergency conservatorship, and search warrants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a man's death after they say he died following a fight. Police were called to the 5600 block of Imperial Avenue in Valencia Park around 1:12 p.m. after receiving reports of a man having chest pains. After arriving, the 51-year-old man -- identified as San Diego resident Joseph Ives -- was taken to the hospital where he later died.Police later learned that Ives got into a fight shortly before his death. According to police, after an altercation with another man, Ives told a witness that he was experiencing chest pains. Ives "did not have any obvious signs of trauma to his body," police said. Out of caution, San Diego Police homicide detectives are investigating the death.  773
