SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new program at the University of San Diego will give students a crash course in cybersecurity, one of the fastest-growing fields in the region.USD partnered with online education company Fullstack to offer the 26-week course. They say people who take it will be ready to apply for the thousands of available jobs that companies in San Diego are having a hard time filling."When they're done, they could go into software engineering, software development, web development, cybersecurity," says Andy Drotos, USD's Director of Professional and Public Programs. "There's a long list of jobs available in all of those areas."According to a 2019 study by the San Diego Cyber Center of Excellence, there are more than 150 cybersecurity firms across San Diego. They create 8,450 jobs -- that's an 11% jump from 2016. Some estimate there are around 4,000 open positions in the cybersecurity field."There's a demand for staff who have previous work experience and can apply that to new roles," says Andy Haas, a Chief Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton. He says his company is always looking for people to fill cybersecurity roles."It really is a growing need across companies, across industries here in the region," says Haas.The boot camp-style course at USD has classes that are taken online, twice a week. There's also a Saturday class that meets both in-person and online. Drotos says it's perfect for people looking to make a career change."If you have an affinity for technology, or you have an interest, you don't need a degree," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A nursing assistant at a Rancho Bernardo senior care facility is battling for her life, diagnosed with COVID-19. In terms of coronavirus, Villa Rancho Bernardo care center is among the hardest-hit senior care facilities in the county.In early May, Lani says her sister, Irene Branch, a longtime nursing assistant there, told her about all the sick calls, and repeated her insistence to keep working."She always has a big heart. If they are short, she always go to work," said Lani.Around the same time, Branch started to feel sick."Coughing a little bit, no appetite and a short fever," said Lani.Her symptoms quickly got worse and a few days later, Lani got a frightening call from her sister. "She had shortness of breath, so I told her to call 911," said Lani.She did, and a day later in the ICU, Branch was on a ventilator. She received donated plasma containing COVID-19 antibodies, but her condition has deteriorated. Kidney failure has led to ongoing dialysis."I pray. Our family is praying a lot. Every one is praying for her," said Lani.Lani says doctors recently removed her from a medically induced coma, but she remains comatose. "She can't wake up. That's the problem. She's not waking up ... It's hard. I can't accept it right now," said Lani.Unable to visit her sister because of COVID-19 restrictions, Lani recently talked to Branch via Facetime while a hospital worker held up a phone."Telling her we are here to support her. Letting her know we are not abandoning her ... I am very hopeful. I will not give up," said Lani. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A portion of City Hall in Downtown San Diego was evacuated after crews working in the building possibly disturbed asbestos.According to the city, construction crews working on the lobby possibly disturbed the asbestos around 2 p.m. Thursday. The city said in a memo that a contractor working on the sprinkler system accidentally dislodged a section of the ceiling, causing it to crash to the ground. "Immediate action was taken to isolate and contain the material,'' according to the memo. The substance hasn’t yet been confirmed as asbestos, but hundreds of people were forced to evacuate as a precaution. Crews plan to conduct air testing Thursday night with the expectation of reopening City Hall Friday morning. The City Clerk’s office remains open and is working out of a nearby location until Thursday evening so candidates running for office can meet their 5 p.m. deadline. 909

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A preliminary hearing was held Monday for a parolee accused of sexually assaulting an 88-year-old woman at a Hillcrest nursing home. Police say 49-year-old Lusean Arline was arrested November 4th in connection with the alleged October 27th sexual assault at the Balboa Nursing & Rehab Center on Fourth Ave.Prosecutors say Arline entered the nursing home, possibly through an unlocked door, around 3 that morning and was found completely nude on top of the victim in her bed.
