SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lupus patients were shocked and scared when they found out they couldn't get a refill of their life-altering prescription, due to COVID-19.Grandmother Michele Fumar said her daughter has had lupus, an autoimmune disease, since she was 11. She's 27 now, married with two young kids.Her daughter got an email from Kaiser Permanente reading in part, "in order to keep an essential supply of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) for critically ill COVID-19 patients, we have placed a temporary freeze on refills."She was just shocked, we were all shocked," Fumar said about reading that email. "This drug is very important to maintain her health so yes it is just very frustrating."The kind of lupus her daughter has attacks her kidneys. Even while taking her prescription she's had complications. Fumar said her daughter became ill at the mall several years back, suddenly weak with a headache. That trip to the emergency room turned into a week long hospital stay.Fumar said her daughter has been trying to wean off of the medication with no luck thus far. "She only has 16 days left of her prescription." Now they're both scared. Her daughter was told to space out the medication, but they don't know how that will affect her health.Janae Lessnau was just diagnosed with lupus in January. On average it takes six years to get diagnosed with lupus, meeting several criteria from several specialists, the Lupus Foundation says.Lessnau said the drug has already had a huge impact on her life, "it helps with fatigue, it helps with the joint pain. It's not really affecting my kidneys or any vital organs right now but not being on it, it could increase the spread, you know increase the process."Lessnau said she felt lucky to pick up her monthly prescription Tuesday at CVS. She heard at the pharmacy she won't be able to get a refill in the future.In contrast, CVS put out a statement reading in part, "With client consent, CVS Caremark is setting appropriate limits on the quantity of each of these medicines for potential use in treating COVID-19. Members who already take these medicines for approved uses will be able to bypass the new quantity limits.""We all feel bad for the patients who may be suffering from COVID-19 but it's not a proven solution," Fumar said. Lessnau agreed adding, "when did we get to the point where we pick and choose lives?"The Lupus Foundation is contacting politicians in Sacramento for help, hoping to find a solution."Right now, today we can't say yes there is a shortage, I don't believe that's true. But what I am afraid of is it will be very quick, because if people are hoarding the drug it will turn out to be like the toilet paper," Executive Director of the Lupus Foundation Southern California Division Elizabeth Savage said.After reaching out to Kaiser Permanente they said they are re-evaluating their policy. 2874

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there. We are so grateful," said Lee.Lee says she offered many of the donors meals, but many didn't accept, saying that's 'not the reason' they wanted to help out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Iconic TV host Regis Philbin, who has roots in San Diego television history, has died at the age of 88, multiple news outlets report.According to a family statement obtained by PEOPLE, Philbin passed away from natural causes Friday night.Philbin returned to his roots in 2018 with a visit to 10News.After a stint in the United States Navy, he moved to San Diego where he launched a career in broadcast. The icon was briefly a news anchor in San Diego when Channel 10, at the time known as KOGO, approached him about taking over as an anchor of the evening news.PHOTOS: Former 10News anchor Regis Philbin visits the 10News crew"This was the beginning of it all," Philbin said upon beginning his tour. "It really was."Shortly after, Philbin landed his first talk show, "The Regis Philbin Show," which was filmed in the ABC 10News studios where the current newscasts are produced.Philbin acted as his own writer, producer, and show guest booker. He was able to book many top celebrities including Jerry Lewis, Ronald Reagan, Danny Thomas, and Liberace.His talk show, which was produced at the now KGTV studios from 1961 to 1965, aired live from 11:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. every Saturday night."The show became a big hit so it was time to go to Hollywood, I guess, so I did," said Philbin.Philbin moved his show to Los Angeles, before being hired in 1967 as the sidekick for a national talk show, "The Joey Bishop Show." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's the final countdown for the San Diego Zoo's remaining panda bears.The zoo has launched a three-week farewell celebration for 27-year-old giant panda Bai Yun and her son, 6-year-old Xiao Liwu, before the two are repatriated to China this spring. Working with our colleagues in China, San Diego Zoo Global is ready to make a commitment for the next stage of our panda program.”Zoo visitors can see the pandas at their habitat leading up to their departure, and the park will be selling special commemorative bells and offering free tags to hang on the Giant Panda Friendship Wall.How you can see the giant pandasThe San Diego Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. One-day passes for adults cost and for children ages 3-11.
