WASHINGTON (AP) — As coronavirus cases rise in more than half of the states, the Trump administration is urging the Supreme Court to overturn the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare.The administration’s high court filing Thursday came the same day the government reported that close to half a million people who lost their health insurance in the economic shutdown to slow the spread of COVID-19 have gotten coverage through HealthCare.gov.The administration’s legal brief makes no mention of the virus.Some 20 million Americans could lose their health coverage and protections for people with preexisting health conditions also would be put at risk if the court agrees with the administration. 716

VISALIA, Calif. (AP) — A California prosecutor has charged a high school teacher with several child cruelty and battery counts after she forcibly cut the hair of one of her students.Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward said in a news release Friday that 52-year-old Margaret Gieszinger faces up to 3 years and 6 months in jail if convicted of all six counts.Gieszinger was arrested Wednesday after video posted to social media showed a student at University Preparatory High School in Visalia sitting in a chair as she cuts his hair.In a video obtained by KFSN-TV, the science and chemistry teacher is heard belting the "Star Spangled Banner" while cutting the boy's hair and tossing chunks behind her.The district attorney's office did not know if Gieszinger had retained an attorney. 797

  

WASHINGTON (AP) — An official at the Department of Homeland Security says he was pressured by agency leaders to make his intelligence reports reflect the priorities of the Trump administration. Brian Murphy also says in a whistleblower complaint that he was demoted from his position as the Office of Intelligence and Analysis in retaliation for refusing to alter his reports on such matters as Russian interference in the election and the extent of the threat posed by white supremacists.A copy of the complaint was released Wednesday by Rep. Adam Schiff of the House Intelligence Committee. Schiff says he has asked Murphy to testify to Congress. DHS had no immediate comment. 686
