BERLIN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- 2010 is an important year for the development of Sino-German relations. That's as the two countries have made big achievements on politics, economy, culture and society, sending their bilateral relations to a "new historical point."German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited China in July and met Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao. During her visit, China and Germany issued the second communique in two countries' history, which was considered a historical event by both sides.The Sino-German relations have entered a new phase, Merkel said. The development of relations between the two countries, she said, are formed on a "completely new basis."Wen said Merkel's visit and the communique have "historical significance" that will help map out the blueprint of bilateral ties and make it stand on "a new historical starting point."The communique contains 28 points, in which both sides pledged to maintain regular contact between their leaders and the mechanism of annual meetings of the premier and chancellor.Both countries stressed to take care of each other's core interests, to enhance their mutual understanding and political trust, and to strengthen dialogues on strategy, law and human rights. They also expressed interest in improving cooperation in the United Nations, international financial institutions and other multilateral organizations.In addition to Merkel's visit, the two countries' leaders met each other during many world events in 2010 to strengthen their mutual trust. In April, Hu met Merkel at the the nuclear summit in Washington. One month later former German President Horst Koehler paid a state visit to China.During Wen visit to Europe in October, the premier changed his route and met Merkel in Berlin. Both sides reconfirmed the communique issued in July. Wen also was invited to co-chair the first round of the Sino-German government consultations in 2011, making Germany the first EU country to hold high-level intergovernmental consultations with China."China and Germany have maintained a strategic partnership and a close bilateral tie, even at the highest political level," the German foreign ministry said.Tight political relations are built on strong and complementary economic connections between China and Germany, the largest trading partner for each other in their respective regions.Sino-German trade has accounted for nearly one third of the trade between China and Europe. UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes the smooth completion of the referendum in south Sudan, which is "an important step" towards the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peaceful Agreement, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Tuesday. Addressing an open debate on the situation of Sudan in the Security Council, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN Wang Min said that the referendum in south Sudan is not an end in itself in implementing the CPA, instead, realizing sustainable peace, stability and development in Sudan is the final purpose. "No matter what the outcome of the referendum is, it is imperative to ensure the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region at large," said Wang. Wang noted that China hoped to see the north and south Sudan would continue to conduct dialogue and consultations, so as to reach an earlier agreement on such issues as the status of Abyei, wealth sharing and border demarcation, lying down a foundation for further promoting the north-south peace process. On Saturday, South Sudan referendum polling centers closed. The referendum will determine whether south Sudan remains a part of Sudan or becomes independent, in accordance with the 2005 CPA that ended a long-running north-south civil war. In order to assist Sudan in the referendum, China has donated to the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission 500,000 U.S. dollars in cash and provided its bureau with support in kind. China has also sent a group of observers to Sudan. Wang reiterated China's willingness to "work together with the international community and the parties concerned to continue to play an active and constructive role in promoting the long-term peace, stability and development of Sudan." Concerning the situation in Darfur region, Wang said that China supports a peaceful and comprehensive settlement to the Darfur issue, in particular the tackling of the root causes for the issue. "At present, the security situation in Darfur is very fragile, and humanitarian assistance is faced with many difficulties, " said Wang, "the root cause is the lack of a strong and widely supported political agreement in Darfur." China called on the Security Council and international community to strengthen support for political process in Darfur and urged the Darfur rebel groups to join the peace talks without conditions and delay, said Wang.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia Gu Xiaojie on Friday signed an agreement on the provision of aid to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).The grant amounting to 30 million RMB, (over 4 million U.S. dollars), will be used to supply equipment and materials for AMISOM. The signing of this agreement comes in the wake of the adoption by the United Nations Security Council, on Dec. 22, of resolution 1964(2010), in which it, inter alia, requested the Secretary- General to continue to provide a logistical support package for AMISOM, for a maximum troop strength of 12,000, as called for by resolution 1863 (2009).In resolution 1964(2010), the Security Council also called on UN Member States and regional and international organizations to make direct bilateral donations in support of AMISOM.By generously providing aid to AMISOM, the People's Republic of China is responding to the call made by the United Nations Security Council and the earlier appeal by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for AU partners to support the ongoing efforts in Somalia, AU said in a statement. Gu Xiaojie reiterated China's continued commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the AU in the area of peace and security and to support all endeavors in this regard. He lauded AU's efforts and resolve towards the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Lamamra stated said that "China has, over the years, been providing multifaceted assistance to the AU and African countries as they strive to address the many challenges facing the continent. Today's donation is a further testimony of China's commitment and its determination to contribute to the furtherance of peace and security in the continent".Furthermore, Commissioner Lamamra avails himself of this opportunity to renew the appeal to all AU partners to provide the requisite support to AMISOM as it enters a new phase of its deployment.
