WASHINGTON (AP) — Amy Coney Barrett has been formally sworn in as the Supreme Court’s ninth justice, replacing the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath Tuesday morning at the court in Washington D.C.Barrett's first votes on the court could include two big topics affecting the man who appointed her.The court is weighing a plea from President Donald Trump to prevent the Manhattan district attorney from acquiring his tax returns as well as appeals from the Trump campaign and Republicans to shorten the deadline for receiving and counting absentee ballots in the battleground states of North Carolina and Pennsylvania. It’s not certain Barrett will take part in these issues. 728

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is ordering the removal from the Capitol of portraits honoring four previous House speakers who served in the Confederacy. In a letter Thursday to the House clerk, Pelosi directed the immediate removal of portraits depicting these former speakers: Robert Hunter of Virginia, James Orr of South Carolina, and Howell Cobb and Charles Crisp, both of Georgia.Pelosi says the House was unaware of the portraits until an inventory was taken of the chamber’s statues.“We didn't know about this until we were taking inventory of the statues,” she said. “And the curator told us that there were four paintings of speakers in that and the Capitol of the United States four speakers who had served in the Confederacy.”Pelosi says that "there is no room in the hallowed halls of Congress or in any place of honor for memorializing men who embody the violent bigotry and grotesque racism of the Confederacy.″Pelosi says the portraits will be taken down in observance of Juneteenth, a June 19 holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. 1094

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were arrested this week after a pursuit took authorities from Valley Center into unincorporated Escondido.San Diego Sheriff's Department says the pursuit began just after 9 p.m. near State route 76 near Pala Mission Rd. after a deputy spotted a stolen truck. When the deputy tried to pull the truck over, the deputy says the drier sped off.The chase reached speeds of 90 miles per hour and lasted about 30 minutes, with deputies from Fallbrook and San Marcos assisting in the chase.A spike strip was used and put an end to the chase near the Mountain Meadows community of unincorporated Escondido, the department said. After hitting the curb, the driver put the truck in reverse and rammed into a Sheriff's patrol car, deputies say.No deputies were hurt. The female driver and male passenger of the truck, identified as Sally Arrellanes and Roy James Duncan, were arrested and charged with felony evading, assault with a deadly weapon likely to result in great bodily injury, vehicle theft, conspiracy to commit crime and possession of a stolen vehicle. 1093

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The husband of a Vista woman who went missing in 2017 has been arrested for her murder, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.Hector Martinez was arrested Thursday morning for the murder of Maria Guzman, who was reported missing on October 13, 2017.The couple had been married for 20 years and has three daughters who, at the time of her disappearance, were nine, 15 and 19. According to the department, Martinez reported Guzman missing after the couple got into a fight. WASHINGTON — Public health guidance to avoid big parties in the age of coronavirus is about to collide with the swearing-in of a new president. There are also reports President Donald Trump may use his last morning in office to plan a send-off and possibly a rally. With lots of details to be worked out, this year's event honoring President-elect Joe Biden is sure to be more subdued than prior inaugural days.Trump has not publicly said whether or not he will attend the swearing in on January 20, as traditionally the outgoing president has done before welcoming the new president to the White House. Aides have not speculated what he plans to do.Trump may plan a “made-for-TV” moment on his last day in office, according to Axios. Sources say Trump is considering a White House departure on Marine One and a final Air Force One flight to Florida to attend a political rally. There is some speculationTrump will announce a presidential campaign run in 2024 on Inauguration Day, according to NBC News.Meanwhile, Biden this week has named top Democrats to the committee putting the day’s events together, including Representative James Clyburn, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti.A giant parade down Pennsylvania Avenue isn't likely. Fancy balls may morph into virtual events. The traditional luncheon where lawmakers offer best wishes to the new president might not include food this year.As for the swearing-in itself, the inaugural platform on the Capitol’s West Front is going up just like always, but it probably won’t be as crowded. Some estimate the platform will hold fewer than 1,600 people, all wearing masks and socially distant. The choir that typically sings behind the new president may not happen, however the Marine Band, which has played at every inauguration since 1801, is still scheduled to participate.Aides working to plan the day’s events say perception matters, and holding indoor events, including food and drink, could send the wrong message to Americans who have been repeatedly told to limit gatherings and wear masks. 2079
