SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Come February, SeaWorld San Diego is hoping to fill the night sky over Mission Bay with the lights of a drone show. The California Coastal Commission began considering their proposal for a test run at a hearing near San Francisco Thursday. For decades, fireworks capped off a day of summer fun at SeaWorld. A few years ago - amid ongoing concerns over impacts on wildlife, water quality and pets - SeaWorld scaled back the shows, in favor of laser light shows. Now comes another high-flying option in the form of the drone light shows like those that have wowed at places like Universal Studios and Disney World. RELATED: SeaWorld San Diego says new dive coaster 'Mako' coming in 2020SeaWorld applied for a 15-night test run from February 4 through 18. Using GPS technology, more than 500 12-ounce drones would fly up to 400 feet in the sky, forming shapes with on-board lights in a five minute show, accompanied by music on the ground."I think it would be amazing to see it," said Alan Trachman, a Los Angeles resident who has visited SeaWorld San Diego about 15 times.Industry observers believe if successful, the drones could eventually replace some or all of the fireworks shows.RELATED: Groundbreaking held for SeaWorld's Sesame Place San Diego theme park in Chula VistaIf the idea is approved, SeaWorld will be required to monitor noise, light and any bird strikes during the test run. 1416

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego’s Pride celebration approaches, a new homeless shelter has opened specifically focusing on members of the LGBTQ community. It’s operated by the Interfaith Shelter Network, which just opened a new branch in Hillcrest after receiving grants from the Pride Foundation and the Cushman Foundation.Abigail Shrestha, the manager of the rotational shelter programs at Interfaith, said they opened the new shelter because they recognized the need.“It’s a population that has quite a bit of discrimination and other issues, so it’s beneficial to have something that supports the community,” said Shrestha. The operation is based out of Hillcrest, but the shelter location will rotate between churches in Interfaith’s network. As of Monday, one week after they opened, they had six clients, though it can hold up to 12 people. Shrestha said she expects it to be full by the end of the week.Interfaith operates shelters around the county which are all LGBTQ friendly, but this is the first one that is targeted for that community. Mainly, said Shrestha, because of the unique circumstances of their housing instability.“Many of the clients, especially the youth, are forced out of their homes. Some families will not recognize positively their choices, and they are kicked out,” she said.Their main goal is to get the residents into permanent housing. Once in the shelter, the residents are paired with a case manager, who helps guide them through the different resources that are available. For more information on the shelter, visit the Interfaith Shelter Network website. 1599

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City leaders are considering closing some streets in the Gaslamp Quarter to help with social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.Pictures on social media showed crowds of people congregating outside bars, many not wearing face coverings, shortly after they reopened Friday.According to a spokesman for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the city's department of special events is reviewing a proposal to shut down parts of Fifth Avenue between G and K streets to make it easier to physically distance by providing more room in parts of the public right of way for outdoor dining. The Gaslamp Quarter Association submitted the application, which would close close the streets Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays. It could be approved and go into effect as soon as this Thursday.Robert Romero owns the Tivoli Bar and Grill. The longtime family-run restaurant on Sixth Avenue reopened Monday. It's the oldest bar in San Diego county."We were open originally in 1881, never have closed in all those years, during the depression, prohibition, World War I, World War Two, until now," said Romero. The owners say they'll be strict about social distancing, face coverings, and increased sanitation protocols."We will have someone at the front door constantly monitoring our customers and making sure they are holding to the restrictions put on us," said Romero.Romero said he noticed many other bars and restaurants were not following the county health orders."It was terrible, when they do that, they're not only reflecting on us, but also putting up the potential for shut down," said Romero.County Health Officials also acknowledged there were problems Friday night after the bars first reopened, but said the city is working to close some streets.California Assemblymember Todd Gloria is also concerned about crowds gathering in the Gaslamp."Part of their reopening is a limited of their capacity, they're operating at a fraction of what they can actually accommodate. Because they were metering the entrance of customers into their businesses, that overflow of customers ends up on the sidewalk," said Assemblymember Gloria.Gloria also thinks closing Fifth Avenue is a good idea."Let's see if there's a way to meet in the middle if you will, these businesses are adhering to the guidelines; the city can certainly help people by closing down the streets, we can be passing out face masks to people who are waiting," said Gloria.Back at Tivoli's, the owners are ready to welcome back customers."Behave, be happy, we love you, they love us and remember, I love it," said Romero, referring to the name Tivoli, spelled backwards. 2648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County Supervisors Wednesday sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom asking him to take a second look at San Diego, potentially allowing shuttered businesses to reopen amid COVID-19. In the letter, Supervisors Kristin Gaspar, Jim Desmond, and Councilmember Chris Cate of the sixth district said Newsom’s “one-size-fits-all approach to closing entire business sectors is misguided as evidenced by the many sectors in San Diego forced to close their doors again despite not having contributed at all to the rise in our local cases.”Supervisors also pushed the governor to give more control to local leaders and health officials. RELATED: San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, other local leaders take action to keep restaurants open“It is time to give local control of this public health emergency to the elected leaders and clinical team closest to the people so that we can begin community specific healing based on local data,” the letter reads. The letter was sent after San Diego was added to the state’s watch list, forcing some businesses to halt indoor operations.Following the new rules, Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed an emergency executive order making it easier for restaurants to operate outdoors.RELATED: San Diego to close some businesses as COVID-19 cases spikeThe Poway City Council also voted to provide picnic tables to local restaurants in an effort to help businesses move outside.Read the full letter below: 1446
