(KGTV) - A Chula Vista school rallied around one of its own students faced with tragedy Thursday night.Camarena Elementary hosted a fundraiser for the family of Aura Mancilla, a mother who was murdered earlier this month.“She was here [at Camarena] almost every day trying to help out her daughter and our community,” said her friend and PTA President Karina Jones. Chula Vista Police said David Bell shot Aura Mancilla and her aunt, Patricia Garcia, in Mancilla’s home.  Thankfully, Mancilla’s daughter, Iyali, wasn’t home.  Bell later took his own life.The Camarena community organized a dinner fundraiser Thursday night where local vendors brought their food trucks and tents and donated 20% of the proceeds to the family. “It’s something that you want to take care of that child to make sure that she’s still loved and that we’re here for her,” said Jones.Chula Vista Police said they still don’t have a motive for the two killings. 989

The dent never got fixed, and the man did end up causing more damage before taking off with Dabalack's check, which he stopped.Police told 10News the scammer was likely targeting seniors with disability plates.When Denise Marquez saw the story, she was spurred into action. Marquez just sold Marquez Auto Body, a 55-year-old shop first opened by her parents - and plans to retire at the end of the year. She's not taking new customers except for one man."Seeing him being take advantage of makes me very angry. Wanted to help even more. I want him to see the legacy of my mom and dad. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A pedestrian died Friday night following a crash along Main Street in Chula Vista, police say. According to police, the incident happened near the intersection of Main Street and Del Monte Avenue around 9:30 p.m.After arriving on scene, officers found the injured man in the eastbound lane of Main Street. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.At this time, the circumstances of the crash are under investigation, but the department says the driver stayed on scene and cooperated.Alcohol isn’t believed to be a factor in the crash, police say. (KGTV) -- South Bay junior and senior high school families learned Monday they will need to stand fast at home a little longer after district officials said they will not reopen campuses for physical learning this year.The Sweetwater Union High School District announced that students will continue distance learning through December 2020 citing "significantly higher" COVID-19 cases within the district's communities.The announcement comes as local health officials wait to hear if the state will place San Diego County back into the purple tier -- the most restrictive level on California's coronavirus reopening road map. Such a move would likely shutter indoor operations for restaurants, movie theaters, houses of worship and gyms, limit retail businesses to just 25% capacity. Chula Vista reported 5,603 COVID-19 cases making up 12.7% of the county's total cases, according to the latest county health data. "It is with this information, and with our continued commitment to the safety of our students, families, and staff, that we announce the continuation of distance learning for the remainder of the semester through December 2020," the district said in an email to families."As was outlined in our reopening plan earlier in the summer, our next checkpoint will be by November 30, 2020, to determine how we will start the second semester in January 2021," officials said.SUHSD is the first school district to commit to closing its campuses through the remainder of the year.The district kicked off its school year online on Aug. 3, the first district in the county to start the fall semester.Under the distance learning model, students are attending three virtual classes per day with 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with each teacher. (KGTV) -- A high school Senior from Chula Vista was charged in Federal Court Monday for reportedly trying to recruit other students to smuggle drugs into the U.S.Court documents show that Phillip Junior Webb, who was a senior at Castle Park High School in 2017, recruited other high school students to smuggle methamphetamine and fentanyl into the U.S.According to the documents, starting in July of 2017, juveniles were caught trying to smuggle drugs by strapping the drugs to their bodies as they tried to enter the United States.RELATED: Teens targeted to smuggle Fentanyl across US-Mexico?On May 4, Web was reportedly caught trying to bring a Chinese national and Mexican national into the U.S. in the trunk of his vehicle.“We are seeing a very troubling trend and we want to warn parents and high schoolers,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman. “Our youth are being recruited by drug cartels to smuggle dangerous drugs across the border. We are going after the recruiters who exploit these kids, but the kids also need to know that they are gambling with their lives when they do this.
