The nation’s doctors and nurses are pleading for ventilators, masks, and other personal protection equipment while they fight the COVID-19 outbreak.“We’re trying to get more ventilators for the sickest patients," said Dr. Chris Farnitino, who runs the Contra Costa County Health Deptartment. "We’re trying to get more personal protective equipment, gloves, masks gowns, eye shields for all of our health care workers and first responders. We need all of the above."Contra Costa County is one county in the San Francisco Bay Area. For his team, time is running short.“As far as when we need it, we are already seeing our cases increase exponentially," he said. "We think we may be a week or two behind where New York City is."The Bay Area is one of the areas around the country ramping up for a massive influx of COVID-19 patients in the coming days and weeks. Right now, they don’t have what they need.“Currently, in Contra Costa County we have about 1,000 hospital beds, and approximately 150 of those are intensive care unit beds,” said Farnitino. He says that number needs to at least double. Nearly 1.2 million people live in that county.New York is facing similar, if not even more dire, circumstances. New York Gov. Cuomo described the situation as a bullet train hitting New York City, and they need more supplies for the coming weeks.“We do not yet have secured a supply for three weeks from now, four weeks from now, five weeks from now, but we are still shopping,” Coumo said in a press conference. The situation is serious, if not dire. But there is some help coming.“We, by the way, now have six California companies, six that want to manufacture gowns," Gov. Gavin Newsome, California (D) told constiuents in a press conference. "We just had a conversation with 25 providers that want to start 3-D printing masks in the state of California."And companies like 3M, which manufacturers the sought-after N95 masks, says they have increased production to produce almost 100 million N95 masks per month. And you can help too. There are lots of examples of ways to donate money or PPE directly to the healthcare workers who need it. One of the easiest and simplest may be to go to 2199

The House failed to override President Donald Trump's veto after both chambers of Congress sought to overturn his national emergency declaration to build more border wall. The vote was 248-181, with 14 Republicans voting with Democrats to support the override. It was a steep hill to climb for opponents of Trump's national emergency as the House would have needed two-thirds of its members to back the veto override. Thirteen Republicans voted for the resolution in the first place. Both chambers of Congress passed a resolution to overturn Trump's national emergency declaration to fund more border wall, which would use billions from the Treasury and Defense departments after Congress rejected giving Trump the full amount of border wall money he requested for the year. The decision sparked criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike, many of whom argued the national emergency action would violate the Constitution. The House easily passed the resolution of disapproval in February. A few weeks later, 12 Senate Republicans joined with Senate Democrats to pass it, marking a sharp rebuke from members of the President's own party on a key issue to his base. The President vetoed the bill one day after it cleared the Senate."Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it," Trump said from the Oval Office before officially sending the measure back to Congress without his approval.House Democrats, meanwhile, were quick to announce they would hold an override vote on March 26. "The House and Senate resoundingly rejected the President's lawless power grab, yet the President has chosen to continue to defy the Constitution, the Congress and the will of the American people," Pelosi said in a statement at the time. But the House faced a high hurdle, needing a two-thirds majority -- rather than a simple majority -- to override the veto. The House first passed the bill 245-182.House Democratic leaders were under no illusion that the veto override would pass. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said last week that the point of the vote is to make it clear the new Democratic-controlled House won't tolerate the President's persistence for a border wall."Whether we can succeed with the number of votes is not the point," Pelosi said at an event in New York. "We are establishing the intent of Congress."Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said earlier this month that the National Emergency Act allows for a resolution of disapproval to come up every six months, and Democrats intend to bring it up again then. 2550

The nation's federal debt is now projected to balloon to "unprecedented levels" over the next 30 years, if policymakers fail to change laws, potentially pushing the country into the risk of a "fiscal crisis," the nonpartisan 237

The Bakersfield Police Department in California has arrested a 23-year-old man who officials said forced his pregnant girlfriend to ingest numerous unknown pills in an effort to force a miscarriage. According to BPD, on Wednesday around 1:00 a.m. officers received a report of suspicious circumstances. The person who called police claimed a pregnant family member, the victim, had been held at gunpoint and forced by the victim's boyfriend to ingest numerous unknown-type pills to try to force a miscarriage. Officers responded to a local hospital where the victim was and confirmed the story with the victim. BPD said the victim did have a miscarriage as a result of the incident. Police identified the suspect as Jagmeet Sandhu, 23, and executed search warrants at locations associated with Sandhu and found evidence that corroborated the reported offenses. Sandhu was taken into custody without incident near 17th Street and Truxtun Avenue. He was later booked into the Kern County Jail for several criminal charges including murder, domestic assault, and false imprisonment. The investigation is ongoing.
