SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego is changing who can get a COVID-19 test at county sites.Officials said Monday that going forward, the county is focusing coronavirus testing efforts for priority groups, including those with symptoms."For new appointments being made, those will be focused on individuals who are symptomatic or individuals who are asymptomatic that fit into some of our priority groups like healthcare workers, first responders, those with chronic or underlying health conditions and those living in long-term care facilities," said County of San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Fletcher said the county has more sick people and more positive cases, which means there's a greater demand on the testing system. He explained that challenge is being compounded by a global supply chain shortage with testing supplies and components."By taking this approach to reprioritize our focus on symptomatic folks and asymptomatic folks who are in the settings I just described we might see a reduction in the number of tests being done, but we do hope to see an increase in the speed in which we're able to turn around those tests," Fletcher said.Testing supply issues are not just a local problem. On Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was asked about supply issues and test result turnaround times."It's unacceptable in this nation and in this state that we are not in a position to be doing even larger scale testing that all of us have been very, very aggressively promoting and trying to manifest," Newsom said, adding that the state is also starting to see delays in testing results.Harvard researchers have said the timing of testing results is crucial."If it takes over a week for the result to come back, mathematically it becomes challenging for testing and contract tracing alone to be adequate," Dr. Thomas Tsai, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital.Harvard researchers found most states still fall short when it comes to testing. Here in California, the state Department of Public Health reports more than 5 million tests have been conducted across the state. On a call with reporters last week, Tsai said California is testing a very high number of people, but relative to its population, it's falling short of its target for suppressing COVID-19."What happened in California is, as the cases have increased, the testing has increased in proportion but hasn't increased to a level where testing has outpaced the growth of cases and the ability to contact trace has actually gotten ahead of the infection and gotten control of it," he said.On Monday, San Diego County officials announced a partnership with local company Helix to provide up to 2,000 tests a day.County officials say they've received 7,500 tests and those are already being used at two sites.Another 10,000 will be sent tomorrow and they expect within a week that every site will be using them. That will ease some of the burden, but won’t cure the overall problem. 3089

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The cost of living in San Diego doesn’t always make it easy for local families to take vacations. Hotels and home rentals can drain a family’s savings. 10News reporter Jennifer Kastner found a local family that’s able to go jet setting without breaking the bank, thanks to a home exchange network.Dana Fallentine, her husband, and their four kids have been taking incredible vacations at an impressive savings. “[We’re talking] thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars,” she tells 10News. Fallentine found the website Love Home Swap, which connects users with homeowners around the world. Arrangements can be made to do temporary home trades. The fee is 0 a year. Compare that to the most recent average U.S. hotel price, which is 0 a night, according to Statistica. Members can swap homes or use points to stay in rental homes. Type in where you want to go and when. Browse the options to see photos and amenities, and then start chatting with the owner. For privacy and security, Love Home Swap does ID verification. For protection, phone numbers, email addresses and home addresses are not made visible on the website. The Fallentine family's most memorable experience was from a swap they did with an Italian family. The Italians got to the Fallentine's home the night before the Fallentine's flew off to the Italians' home in Rome.“I took them to Costco. They bought all this food and then they said, ‘Oh, we're going make you guys dinner.’ I’m like, ‘Totally! I’m not going to pass up a meal by real Italians. I mean, that's crazy!’”Fallentine says when her own family home-swaps, having access to another home’s kitchen is one of the biggest cost-savers.“If you're thinking about the food aspect, just to be able to cook your own food is amazing and [you have a] full kitchen with everything you need,” she adds.Another perk is having access to a home's laundry room. It allows the Fallentines to save on airline baggage fees, because now they can carry-on backpacks and wash their clothes at the vacation homes. For a family wanting to live large on a small budget, she says Love Home Swap has been a game changer. “It saves money. It’s just common sense, basically,” says Dana. 2235

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family who lost their home in the Willow Fire is hoping to track down their "angel" firefighter."I know we lost everything, but my dad is still here. We're just so grateful," said Gwendolyn Pavlick. Two days later, an emotional Pavlick shared details of her father's narrow escape from the flames. That Wednesday night, her mother was staying with her in Carlsbad. Her father Doug was fast asleep in his home on Wind River Road in Rancho San Diego, when the fire started. It raced up a hill within minutes. Doug woke up to a loud knock."By the time he got to the door, the kitchen was on fire. The fireman said, 'You have to go.' When he ran upstairs to get keys and wallet, the fire went through the windows of his bedroom," said Pavlick.Gwendolyn says her father has dealt with back and foot issues."My dad, who couldn’t run physically, somehow, at that moment, could," said Pavlick.Doug was able to drive away to safety. From a distance, he watched as his home of 33 years burned. Six other homes were damaged from the heat and smoke."It’s heart-wrenching because that house was in our lives so long, it feels like a family member," said Pavlick. On Thursday, Gwendolyn and her parents surveyed the damage, nearly everything lost, including thousands of family photos. Outside the home, they prayed. Gwen's mother told her they will rebuild."After seeing the house, the first thing she said was, 'God gave us this house. He’s going to give it to us again,'" said Pavlick. As for their biggest blessing - her father's safety - Gwendolyn is now trying to find the mystery firefighter who woke her father."I just want to tell him, 'Thank you so much for saving my dad's life.' I don’t know if he is real or an angel," said Pavlick. The home is insured. Pavlick says very little was salvageable. Among the countless things lost: wrapped presents intended for victims of the Valley Fire in September.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Tens of thousands of jobs are on the line as Congress struggles to save the airline industry, but a new bill announced Friday is giving some aviation workers hope. For Dante Harris, it’s more than a job.“It's a career that I would never want to exchange for any other,” said Harris. In his 21 years as a flight attendant with United Airlines, he’s traveled to every corner of the world. Now, he’s among the tens of thousands laid off after Congress failed to pass a stimulus bill this weekHarris is the president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA Council 12 union stationed at LAX, which also serves San Diego and Seattle members. He says about 2,500 United Airlines workers on the west coast lost their income and health care.It comes as an incredibly hard blow for the first responders of the sky who already faced countless challenges due to COVID-19.“We provide service to make sure that doctors and nurses get to where they need to go, to make sure that Americans are safe,” said Harris. On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said if a bipartisan agreement is not reached, she’ll push for a standalone bill to extend payroll protections for airline workers for another six months.Harris is calling on Washington to extend that crucial funding so airline workers can get their wings back.“We need that bridge to get us to the point where we can bounce back,” said Harris. “And we can fly America to all corners of the earth again.” 1468
