A top ranking member of the Sheriff’s Department is speaking about changes he feels are needed, following the investigation into Assistant Sheriff Rich Miller.On Tuesday, Team 10 confirmed Miller was being accused of inappropriate conduct. Miller is currently using his accumulated time off until his scheduled retirement on March 2nd.Commander Dave Myers, who is running for Sheriff, emphasized women should feel safe to come forward. He used the example of Deputy Richard Fischer, accused by more than a dozen women of sexual misconduct while on duty.“It took after a woman complained… another 13 women to come forward before anything was really done. If we can’t police ourselves within the department, how’s the public going to trust us to do that outside the department?” Myers said.Myers has been with the department for 32 years.“One of my goals is to create that transparency,” Myers said.Sheriff Gore told Team 10 in regards to Miller, “allegations are taken very seriously and given the highest priority.” 1023

A new health hazard is washing up on shores around the world.“They found a lot of it in Italy. They found a lot of PPE in beaches of Japan and Southeast Asia,” said senior scientist Jennifer Brandon, Ph.D. about personal protective equipment, or PPE. “We’re already finding thousands of gloves and masks as the pandemic continues.” Brandon believes more people are using and also improperly disposing of these single-use plastics and says the litter can last several lifetimes.“I would not be shocked if it’s going to be in the hundreds of thousands in gloves and masks in the next years,” she said.Brandon says with grocery stores no longer allowing reusable bags and restaurants serving to-go orders in Styrofoam containers, this is adding to the problem.This swell of plastic pollution has a chain effect, impacting animals and humans.“That plastic is going to get eaten by animals and those animals are what you eat,” Brandon said. “Sometimes it can break down small enough, it even gets into our water supply and sea salts.”Experts say 30 billion pounds of disposable plastic is dumped into the ocean every year. Now, that number is expected to rise even more due to PPE waste.“We expect that plastic pollution will outweigh fish in the ocean if we don’t take care quick action to prevent that from happening,” said Shelley Luce, president of Heal the Bay, a nonprofit with the mission of keeping water clear and clean.“We do beach clean ups year-round and we generally get 700 to 800 people coming out early on a Saturday morning,” she said.With social distancing orders and many beaches closed due to COVID-19, large group gatherings are no longer allowed in some areas.So, Luce is now encouraging people to clean up what she calls “COVID waste” on their own or within their social bubble.“You can do a cleanup in your neighborhood,” she said. “Pick that trash up off the streets because you know where that's going to go, into a storm drain and out into the ocean.”Luce says there are simple solutions for this worldwide problem: properly dispose of PPE or wear a cloth mask, both of which can help stop the spread of coronavirus without creating an environmental hazard. 2187

A total of 173 sea turtles died off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, this week because of the extreme cold, according to Mass Audubon Director Bob Prescott.Prescott said 227 cold-stunned turtles were recovered from the Gulf of Maine since Wednesday, but only 54 lived. A teacher at Dickson Intermediate School in Tennessee launched an emergency lunch money fund for students after an interaction with one child inspired her to help children in need."As I was walking through the cafeteria one day, I saw a child with no tray and no drink just stopped to build those relationships as teacher do, and just asked are you not eating? Do you need something?" said sixth grade literary teacher Julie Potter. "His comment was mom said we’re out of money so I can’t eat today."Potter told the student to grab lunch, on her.But she said she realized that was a short term solution."I thought if I could just donate just a few dollars to set up an account so the next time, the next child will feel safe enough to go through the line without worrying about pride and be fed," Potter said.So Potter put out a post on Facebook, detailing her interaction with the student and a plan to help others."I share this message to say I would like to set up a special lunch account called 1 in 4," the post read. "This account would be for those students, just a handful and only as needed, we see going without food. A study led by researchers from Washington State University found 24 planets that may be more suitable for life than Earth.According to the study, which was published in the journal Astrobiology, the key points the researchers used to describe the "superhabitable" planets were between 5-8 billion years old, wetter, lightly larger, orbit around a particular star, and slightly warmer than Earth.Researchers also noted that some planets orbit stars that change slowly and have longer life-spans than the sun, which means life could thrive on the 24 planets.More than 4,000 exoplanets, which are planets outside our solar system, were researched before researchers settled on the 24 top contenders.None of the 24 planets checked off all the boxes, researchers said.The study stated that the superhabitable planets are located more than 100 light-years away. 864
