SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kids and teens struggling with their mental health during the Coronavirus Pandemic and weeks of protests over racial injustice have a new way to cope.BlueShield CA has expanded its Blue Sky program, increasing funding to local mental health organizations and giving kids a platform to share tips on dealing with anxiety and depression."There's a greater need now than ever," says Blue Sky Program Manager Amanda Lasik. "There's a greater need to speak to youth voices and listen and learn from what's going on."According to the CDC, 7.1% of kids age 3-17 have been diagnosed with anxiety, and 3.2% of kids in the same age group have been diagnosed with depression. Experts believe those numbers will rise because of the pandemic and protests.As part of the expansion, Blue Sky partnered with DoSomething.org to launch the "New State of Mind" campaign. Kids send tips for coping to the website, which get published through emails, texts, and social media."The response has been overwhelming," says Lasik. "When we were originally planning this campaign, we thought it'd be great if we got about 17,000 tips. We've already received over 60,000."In addition to the "New State of Mind" effort, Blue Sky has provided 0,000 to 18 youth organizations in San Diego and Alameda county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are speaking out more than a week after a bloody melee that injured eight guards at Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa.The violence erupted two Sundays ago, around 4 p.m., inside the recreation yard. Corrections officials say there were about 20 inmates in the yard when one of them attacked a guard. His fellow guards rushed to help. In the mayhem that followed, four inmates allegedly assaulted guards. Six of the guards suffered stab wounds.Christina Armstrong's longtime boyfriend, correctional officer Malcolm Billingsley, was in the middle of it."The best way I hear him describe it is a 'melee, just chaos' ... There was so much going on, it was hard for him to pinpoint each action that was taken," said Armstrong.Corrections officials say a warning shot by one of the guards ended the altercation. As the guards were rushed to hospitals, news filtered out to loved ones."It was frightening not knowing for several hours what was going on. It was terrifying," said Armstrong.Billingsley was not stabbed, but suffered a back injury and possible nerve damage to his hand."It's hard for him to everyday things. He can't take care of our son, let alone play with him. He's in a lot of pain," said Armstrong.His fellow guard Roland Milan was stabbed in the face and suffered a brain bleed. His wife Marcy says he's had four plates inserted into his face."A stab wound to the face, to the mouth area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Infectious disease experts say it may take months before the first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine reach an important population: kids.Some doctors worry it may already be too late to get a vaccine authorized for younger kids before the start of the next school year because of the time it takes to recruit children and conduct a new round of clinical trials.“Our children under 12 years of age are almost certainly going into next school year without a vaccine option available for them,” said Dr. Evan Anderson, a pediatrician at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and associate professor at Emory University.Dr. Anderson said such a delay could further impact school reopenings and have resulting consequences on children’s mental health, among other concerns. He said the window is rapidly closing to get a vaccine authorized in time for children older than 12 unless more trials begin immediately.In October, Pfizer tested its vaccine candidate for the first time in 100 kids aged 12 to 15. Moderna is expected to begin testing in that age group in January, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. However, neither company has announced plans to begin testing their candidates in children under 12.That’s concerning to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has been calling on vaccine-makers to include children in clinical trials since September. The AAP argues immunization is critical to stemming the pandemic.“We know that children can be infected with COVID-19 and can transmit it to others. To reduce the spread of this virus and control the pandemic as well as for their own safety, it’s crucial that children be included in the national vaccination program, and that vaccines are made available to children as soon as possible,” said Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, chair of the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases, in another push last month.Although COVID-19 takes a more severe toll on older adults, children make up about 12 percent of the infections in the U.S. and recent studies have shown kids over 10 years old can transmit disease as efficiently as adults, the AAP noted.More than 1.3 million kids had been infected with COVID-19 as of Nov. 26.Experts say it’s important that drug companies test COVID-19 vaccines in children separately from adults.“Kids' immune systems are really different than adults.
