SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the late '80s Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988.Gary did fluff-and-fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS."Everybody could do it. But nobody would do it. And I think that makes him a superhero in my eyes," says Auntie Helen's current Executive Director, Rod Legg.Fear and stigma at the time hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease, but word spread quickly about Gary's services, and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease.HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100,000 lives in the U.S. in the 1980s. Many of Gary's clients and friends who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's.Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry. Eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.The laundry service and the thrift store are still located in North Park."We also do COVID-19 [laundry], which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie in to the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that," Legg says.They're expanding the store, and their outreach, giving out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers.With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries — no questions asked, no referral needed. At one point, to more than 300 people.Legg explains, "this is everybody's HIV in a sense... We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other."All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham, about whom, Legg says, "this man was way before his time... Can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes? We should all be our heroes, for each other." 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued new guidelines that could have a big impact on many international students studying in the U.S.The modifications were posted to ICE's website, outlining the new rules for students on F-1 or M-1 visas. The guidelines say students may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States and that the Department of State won't issue visas to students enrolled in programs that are fully online or allow them to enter the country. The news comes as many schools including San Diego State University and UC San Diego have moved to online only or a hybrid format because of the COVID-19 pandemic.In their modified guidelines, ICE said they had issued a temporary exemption regarding online courses for the spring and summer semesters. If a student attends a school with a hybrid model, the school must certify that the program isn't online only and that the student is only taking the minimal number of online courses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mission Valley is in store to get an additional nearly 30,000 homes by 2050, according to a new plan the City Council unanimously passed Tuesday.The council voted 9-0 to pass the Mission Valley Community Plan, which would increase the number of allowed housing units in Mission Valley to 39,200. Currently, the area has about 11,200 units. The idea is to change Mission Valley's underutilized strip malls into mixed-use developments, where housing and commercial are under the same roof. "That dream, that American dream, that middle class security that is created by home ownership is now vanishing for a large segment of the population, and we can do better," said Jonathan Frankel, who heads the Mission Valley Community Planning Group. But Mission Valley is currently one of the cities most congested areas. Currently, the city says 600 people live and work in Mission Valley, but 40,000 commute in daily. As part of the plan, the city would add bridges and roads, plus an additional trolley stop and bike and walking paths. It would allow the people who do live and work in Mission Valley to get where they need to go, without a car. "The Mission Valley Community Plan Update is a no-brainer that will increase desperately needed housing stock, improve amenities for residents and will help the city meet its climate action goals,” Councilman Scott Sherman said in a statement. “I appreciate my council colleagues for approving this important community plan update.”The city aims to turn Mission Valley into a transit environment to help with the region's housing crisis and its climate action goals, a staff report says. 1654

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Major decisions that could boost - or deal a real blow - to Republican candidates running for state offices about to be made in San Diego.It's because the California G.O.P. Convention kicks off Friday at the Sheraton Harbor Island. About 1,000 Republican delegates will be voting on a variety of endorsements for this year's ballot.G.O.P. gubernatorial candidates like Travis Allen and John Cox will attend, hoping to earn enough delegate votes for the party's endorsement for this year's election.The party is focussed only on state offices and initiatives - such as repealing the gas tax, said Cynthia Bryant, the state party's executive director.This is San Diego's second major political convention leading up to the June primary. The Democrats held their statewide convention here in February - with a who's who of national politicians.It was also the site of major news when the party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her bid for re-election.The big difference for Republicans is that the party will not be taking up major federal issues like gun rights and immigration, Bryant said. The state party also won't be adopting a platform. Instead, Republicans will be focussing on the big decisions in the state - like repealing the recent 12 cent per gallon gas tax hike.They'll also be endorsing candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and attorney general. Still, Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego, says a lot of the decisions made could shape whether the Republicans can recruit new members. "Is this going to be a red meat crowd that really responds only to the visceral issues of immigrations? Or is it going to be a more strategic party that responds to issues that could help Republicans expand their base?" Kousser said. There are some closely watched congressional elections in San Diego County, including who will replace Republican Congressman Darrell Issa in the 49th district, and whether G.O.P Rep.
