You see the spellers on the stage at Scripps National Spelling Bee, but there’s a critical player in the competition who you hear more than see.Dr. Jacques Bailly is the Bee’s official pronouncer, and to the spellers, he’s a celebrity. Participants lined up to meet the man many saw in the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, and who records the words many of them have studied.“It's really kind of an honor that they all come here, and they think I’m, you know, somebody famous and interesting to meet,” says Dr. Bailly. “We're here to honor them.”Dr. Bailly has a keen understanding of what the spellers are going through.He won the Bee in 1980 and has some tips for spellers taking the stage.“The way to spell a word you don't know: you spell it the way it sounds,” he advises. “Don't make a fancy guess. Don't assume there's a silent ‘Q’ because there aren't very many of those you know just felt the way it sounds. That's kind of the best guess.”His advice for beating the jitters?“I think a deep breath is one of the best things,” he says. “It's just, you know, to feel free, to get up there and go. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire Department and Bomb Squad responded to a hazmat situation in Kearny Mesa Monday. According to the department, the incident started just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Balboa Avenue and Ponderosa Avenue near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, workers at Senior Aerospace Jet Products routinely put titanium shavings in barrels. Monday afternoon, one of the barrels, a 55-gallon drum, began to get hot and started expanding. Firefighters arrived at the business and poured water on top of the barrel to cool the contents after evacuating the building. The bomb squad and hazmat technicians were also called to the scene and, after opening the barrel, say the titanium was reacting with another chemical. Shortly before 7 p.m., the area was declared safe and the barrel turned over to the company for proper disposal. 924

Robotic surgery is now an option at more hospitals across the country.Patient Matthew Canino says the technology helped his heart.“The nature of being a SWAT officer can be very taxing on your body,” Canino says. “So, you have to be in very good physical condition.”But when Canino trained, he noticed something was off.“My heart would race, primarily when I was working out, it would race,” Canino remembers. “And I'd get short of breath. And I kind of I would just stop what I was doing, and it would go away, and I thought everything was fine.”But it wasn’t. Canino’s doctors found out a valve in his heart was leaking.“He said if it wasn't repaired it would continue to get worse and would likely lead to heart failure,” Canino recalls.He thought he’d have to get open heart surgery. However, his doctor recommended a robot instead.“We can get inside the heart through these keyhole incisions on the side of the chest, without cutting through any bones,” says Dr. Sanjay Tripathi, cardiothoracic surgeon at Swedish Medical Center.Dr. Tripathi inserted this camera and robotic arms inside Canino’s chest, and then he sat down at a console inside the operating room where he controlled the robot to do the surgery.“With the robotic technology, particularly 3D high definition imaging from the camera, we're able to see these fine details that would otherwise be a little bit more difficult,” Dr. Tripathi says.Swedish Medical Center is the only hospital in Colorado offering cardiothoracic surgeries with the aid of a surgical robot. But they’re becoming available at more hospitals around the country, and patients are seeing big benefits.“Less pain,” Dr. Tripathi says. “Faster recovery, less bleeding, fewer infections.”“By the third day I was almost completely pain free and needed no pain medication at all,” Canino says.Not all heart surgeries can be done robotically, but the hope is as technology advances, that will change. 2006
