The boy’s parent’s called police to report him missing around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police could be seen in San Diego's Skyline neighborhood searching for the boy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A grieving son is speaking out after COVID-19 claimed its first local VA employee.John Martinez started feeling symptoms in early June. First, it was fatigue. Then came a fever and breathing troubles. His son Josh bought him a device to measure his oxygen levels. In mid-June, Josh's heart dropped when he read the device."His oxygen levels were below 80 and then dropped to 70. We got in our truck, took him straight to the hospital," said Martinez.John, an Army and Navy veteran, was taken to the VA Medical Center in La Jolla where he worked. For more than 15 years, he's maintained biomedical equipment like ventilators.When the pandemic started, he wanted to keep working."It was one of those things. The country needs him, so let's step up," said Martinez.A day after John was admitted, he found himself on one of the ventilators he knew so well. Soon after, his kidneys started to fail. His condition deteriorated quickly. More than a week ago, doctors allowed Martinez to visit."Just told him to fight, to keep fighting. I was crying. Just put my hand to the glass, trying to scream through the glass," said Martinez.Less than 2 days later, his father would pass away. John was set to retire after his birthday in late July, at the age of 63. Martinez isn't sure where his father contracted COVID-19 but other family members believe he got it while working."He wanted that benchmark of 63 to retire. He worked for so long and was looking forward to relaxation," said Martinez.Josh says he can only shake his head at the ongoing mask debate, and those who refuse to wear one."It's all good. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A billing error has double charged approximately 411,000 Medicare beneficiaries, according to government officials.The error affected those who pay their premiums to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through Easy Pay (Automated Clearing House payments.) Officials say the premiums were deducted twice directly from beneficiary’s bank accounts.“They took out both my husband’s and my payment twice,” said Jacki Montierth.Montierth teaches tech seminars for seniors at Oasis Lifelong Learning Center in La Mesa, including about how to use their smartphones and computers to access financial and medical documents.She says, she closely monitors her account, but worries other people may not be as vigilant or even know how to check their statements.“I’m sure this will hurt many people on limited income and my bank says it may take a week to refund,” said Montierth.So far, officials say about 20% of the duplicated money has already been refunded. They said they are working to return the rest of the money by Wednesday, September 25.If the money has not been returned by then, Medicare officials claim the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Service will begin reversing the rest of transactions to complete the reimbursement.Those who worry they have been overcharged can call 1-800-MEDICARE to report an issue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Hillcrest man in search of his stolen bikes made a startling discovery when he stepped into an abandoned church.Early Wednesday morning, surveillance video shows two men stealing three pricey bikes after cutting a metal lock for a garage, as Wilbur Kookmyer slept inside his condo on Georgia Street."Felt angry, felt violated," said Kookmyer.A day later, Kookmyer went in search of his bikes and he didn't go far. Next door - inside an abandoned church at Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue - a security guard agreed to let him have a look.Room after room, he found belongings left behind: clothes, food, and even a drone. In one room is a makeshift bed. There is a bike in another, but it's not his."It's a homeless hotel. They come and go as they please. Free of charge," said Kookmyer.But mostly, what Kookmyer sees is filth."Smells like urine and feces. Needles and trash. It's just disgusting. Looks like a landfill and a health hazard," said Kookmyer.The church was sold last year to a developer. LMC North Park Holdings is still awaiting permits to demolish the site. In the meantime, it's become a campground for transients."Constantly coming and going. Get everything boarded up, but breaking back in every time," said Kookmyer.While Kookmyer was recording, they ran into several people, who were escorted off the property.
