URUMQI, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Police in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, has stepped up crackdown on criminal activities to safeguard stability and public security.     The anti-crime action will be carried out across the region from the beginning of November to the end of the year, said a spokesman for the regional public security bureau Monday.     Local police will continue manhunt to nab suspects in connection with the July 5 riot in Urumqi, the regional capital. Meanwhile police will keep a close eye on clues and cases involving terrorism and explosions, said the spokesman.     The strike also targets criminal activities involving infringement of finance and properties and criminal activities threatening public security, the spokesman said.

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin attended a symposium here on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising of two air carriers in Hong Kong in 1949.     On Nov. 9, 1949, a total of 12 aircraft from the carriers flew from Hong Kong to Beijing and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland during the uprising, a move embraced by the New China. Mao Zedong called it "a very patriotic action of great significance."     Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the precious spirit of the uprising should be inherited and promoted, to encourage all the Chinese to make unswerving contributions to the rejuvenation of the nation.

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday called for tightened prevention measures against A/H1N1 influenza as the country recorded an increasing number of people catching seasonal influenza upon the arrival of winter.     In a visit to a children's hospital in the Chinese capital, Wen said the country faces severe challenges in the prevention and control of A/H1N1 and some areas are likely to have a sharp increase in the number of patients infected by the epidemic.     He said the country is fully confident and capable of doing well the prevention and control work of the A/H1N1 flu and would spare no effort in helping patients, especially those with severe symptoms, to recover. BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said Wednesday the country regards Egypt as one of the most important strategic cooperative partners among Arabian and African nations.     "We attach great importance to the relations with Egypt," Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, told visiting Deputy Speaker of Egyptian People's Assembly Zeinab Radwan. To promote relations between China and Egypt, both influential countries in the world, conformed to the fundamental interests of the two nations and the two peoples, and was also conducive to regional and world peace and prosperity, Wu said. BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Lu Zhengcao, the last one of New China's first 57 generals, was cremated here Tuesday. Lu died of illness on Oct. 13 at the age of 106. Chinese President Hu Jintao, former president Jiang Zemin, and other senior leaders including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the cremation ceremony, which was held Tuesday morning at the hall of the Beijing Babaoshan Cemetery.     In 1955, the People's Republic of China (PRC) first adopted the military ranks and 55 senior officers were granted generals. Two more joined them in 1956 and 1958 respectively.
