SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With just a few days left of Daylight Saving Time, bicycle riders can go to the Central Library today to pick up lights, courtesy of the San Diego County Bike Coalition.Standard Time, when we move the clock back one hour, arrives Sunday morning, meaning that nightfall will arrive 60 minutes earlier.The Bike Coalition will hand out front and rear lights from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the library in the East Village at 330 Park Blvd.Coalition members will also encourage safe, nighttime commuting with safety information about riding in the dark.State law requires that people riding their bikes at night have functioning front and rear lights, according to the coalition. 699

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The union representing mental health professionals at Kaiser Permanente facilities in San Diego and across the state hit the picket lines Monday for a five-day strike amid a continued labor standoff. The walkout by the National Union of Healthcare Workers, representing roughly 4,000 psychologists, therapists, psychiatric nurses and other healthcare employees, had been planned in November but was delayed out of respect following the death of Kaiser CEO Bernard Tyson. Union officials said the walkout could result in the shutdown of more than 100 Kaiser clinics and medical facilities ``from San Diego to Sacramento.'' NUHW accused Kaiser of forcing clinicians to ``accept significantly poorer retirement and health benefits than Kaiser provides to more than 120,000 other employees in California.'' ``Mental health has been underserved and overlooked by the Kaiser system for too long,'' Ken Rogers, a Kaiser psychologist, said in a statement released by the union. ``We're ready to work with Kaiser to create a new model for mental health care that doesn't force patients to wait two months for appointments and leave clinicians with unsustainable caseloads.'' But Kaiser accused the union of flatly rejecting a proposals made by a neutral mediator and opting to strike instead of ``working through the mediated process.'' ``In Southern California, the primary contract concern relates to wage increases and retirement benefits,'' said Dennis Dabney, Kaiser's senior vice president of national labor relations. ``The mediator's recommendation includes wage increases of 3%, 2.75%, 2.75%, .5% each year with lump-sum payments in years 2-4 of 0.25%, 0.25% and 0.5% to provide 3% increases per year over the terms of the agreement and a ,600 retroactive bonus. ``While our therapists in Southern California are paid nearly 35% above market, we believe these issues are resolvable,'' he said. Dabney said NUHW workers have the ``same defined contribution plan that nearly a dozen other unions have, and that has been in place for more than four years.'' ``Our current proposal on the table actually enriches this program such that a 3% employee contribution would have a 9% contribution from Kaiser Permanente,'' he said. ``Again, this is no reason to strike. Rather than calling for a strike, NUHW's leadership should continue to engage with the mediator and Kaiser Permanente to resolve these issues.'' The woman, Marieme Bouguerba, is being represented by San Diego attorney Charles Field, a partner with Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP "She's devastated. You have a single mother who lives with her parents, and she's trying to make things go and to have her entire life savings decimated like this is a major setback for her - both financially and emotionally," said Field.The lawsuit claims Mark Bernier trolls dating websites for vulnerable, high net worth women as part of his investment scams. It goes on to say he advertises himself as a licensed investment professional, attempts to build trust and confidence, and then aggressively seeks to separate the women from their money through purported investments.Bernier is listed as CEO for San Diego-based venture capital firm, VentureMoney Management Co. Field says his client met Bernier on the dating website MillionaireMatch.com, a site designed to help successful people find love. Field says Bernier has exchanged over 29,000 messages with over 3,000 women through the Millionaire Match website, to sell them worthless securities. "Well I think that's the mark of a good salesman, is that a good salesman can make a good pitch, can make a convincing pitch, and when it's backed by a legitimate looking website that has very prominent people on there, all that combined led her to believe that this was reputable," said Field.Field says Bernier scammed his client out of 0,000. While they received 0,000 back during mediation, Field says they are not being told where the rest of the money is."It seems reputable, when you look at the website it seems like he's [Bernier] trying to do good things, that's what it appears. But like I said, we asked where the money is, we asked what it was invested in, where it went, and we have not gotten any answers," said Field. Their lawsuit accuses Bernier of not even having a license to sell securities or give investment advice in California. They've been color blind their whole lives, but thanks to a new pair of special glasses...that's about to change."Eventually when I got to high school, and realizing I was color blind was one of those things, like, oh, that's why I couldn't see that or I couldn't see that," said Ricardo Solano. Solano is one of about 300 million people around the world who are color blind.But as a research associate for a biotech company, there are days when he needs a little help from his colleagues."One of the main dyes they use is like red and green to differentiate things," he said, laughing. "It's a big contrast apparently, but I can't see the contrast."Solano has a good sense of humor about it, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't wish he could see the full elegance of a San Diego sunset."Just enjoying the beauty of life," he said. "I like to go backpacking and outdoors and stuff."For people who are color blind, pink looks gray, red looks brown and the colors red and green can look almost white-ish."Color vision deficiency is passed down through the father's genes," said Corey Ulz, an optician at Scripps Poway Eyecare. He said things can look dull and colors, washed out."It basically makes the colors that you and I would normally see normally not as vibrant," he said. "A little more muddled."On Monday, Solano and three other San Diegans got to see vibrant color, thanks to a special pair of enchroma glasses.Their reactions and expressions were heartwarming. "Red.
